Did not realise Verdy and Nadal did not play since 2012....when Verdy beat Nadal on clay.

Verdy growing in confidence. Another one playing better than ever....at 31!

Nadal is not playing badly actually.

However much he gets on my nerves from time to time, I want him to win. I've really had enough of Berdych's 1d tennis, players who don't go down the line are a waste of time.

This monotonous, modern CC tennis is incredibly dull.

Nadal Verdy is quite exciting actually. Nadal plays pretty well but suddenly verdy decided to play even better.

It was on blue clay.

I remember the blue clay.

Verdy in patches play like a mature player, confident....which was never the case in the past. He played beautifully for a set in Dubai v Federer recently.

Verdasco has to win here cause he will be too nervous serving it out.

Probably the best I have seen him play for a while. Verdy was just too good. Hitting through Nadal. Nadal woudl have won this kind of matches easily 2 or 3 years ago but he is not progressing as fast as the opposition.


He is going to slide down the ranking quick...though to be fair he played very well in that 3rd set. If it was not for Verdy's crazy, risky shots...and some luck, he woudl have lost that one.

He never gave Nadal an easy ball to hit. Was hitting his FH more than 10mph faster han Nadal.

Tomic serving for the match, too.

SUperb Nando but Rafa was error-ridden. Way too far back and too short.

Donb't you think it was Verdy's pace pinning him down at the back? .....especially knowing that Rafa doesn;t need a fast ball to stand far back anyway.

Verdy and the wind produced the UEs..not Nadal form I disagree. Nadal played pretty well actually considering.

You are a fan and as a fan you cannot see that Nadal had a very close match v an inexperienced Verdy and that though Nadal managed to scrap through in that AO 2009. You only saw the win then, and today you can only see the loss.

You cannot see that Verdy played simply great today despite Nadal hitting the ball as hard as he could.

Verdasco was quite good today, but not at the level of Aus Open 2009.

32 ue's is too much for me to say nadal is playing the best i had seen him in a while.

It's not all down to Rafa. As I said Verdy probably coudl have won a set v Federer if not the match in Dubai 4 weeks ago despite Fed playing very well. If it was not for the crowd, fed most likely would have lost that first set. And again today teh crowd seriously affected Verdy in that 2nd set.

Verdy was simply lethal.

Nadal and Stan looked "past it" today.
Stan actually played like his " old" self, Nadal was just outhit.
Verdasco's FH was ridiculous.

29 winners that is the equivalent of 7 games. It's huge. And what do we call winner? When Nadal can't touch teh ball. But I am pretty many others Nadal was on the ball but could not do much with it...and were probably wrongly called UEs.

Verdy's BH in 09 was not nearly as good as today...and nor was his FH BTW.

I don't need to. I know it was not. The only advantage is that it was not windy and the conds were slower so players had longer, more dramatic, rallies..but neither Rafa or Verdy were as good as today. That's something you cannot see but obvious to me.

The Verdy of 2009 was only bothering Rafa....no-one else at the top.

Well he played one great tournament, and didn't really repeat those heroics again.
He actually played great to beat Murray too in that tournament.

Nadal on his returning in the last game, missed two second serve returns into the net.

I remember that match...it was more drama than quality.
Verdasco was not playing as risky as today.

That made the difference.
He had to, in order to win.
Had he played with bigger margins like in AO, he would've lost.

Correct....did you at least noticed that in teh first one Nadal tried to hit as hard as possible to get an UE. He really over did it....did you realse how good wast that second serve he missed? It was a make or break second serve from Verdy...even Cowan praised the gutsy second serve. Nadal was completely off court.

I don't think me or LS are saying Verdasco played well all throughout 2009, however he played incredible in the Aus Open.

OK the first one was a good second serve, but he could have got it in play.
On match point he missed a easy second serve.

2bh he still won 50 odd matches.

I am afraid that does not add up. 20 a set is nearly a 5/0 start. Unless they were playing 2 or 3 deuces every game, you could not possibly lose a set by hitting 20 winners/set. But anyway, Verdy shoudl have won that AO match as well...only lost it because of nerves.
