Re: ATP 1000: Miami
By not playing IW and Barca, Nadal is goimng to go down to 5th place. SO he is guaranteed to be ranked 5th at the FO unless he wins all 3 TMS and Ferrer does considerably worse than last year.

Re: ATP 1000: Miami
I think P. Bodo qualifies for OTF's US correspondent with this piece
"Unless you simply dislike Nadal, it was awfully easy to get caught up in the narrative that began more than eight months ago, when he lost to Lukas Rosol in the second round of Wimbledon. He kind of sucked you into his story—that of a brilliant young warrior whose future was suddenly in serious jeopardy. He kept that story-line going, perhaps mainly because a curious tennis culture demanded updates, timelines, and answers. It wasn’t his fault that those advisories were marked by caution and sometimes curiously doleful; it was what he felt. I don’t recall a single instance of Nadal sounding upbeat or optimistic; this is not a guy who says, “Hey, it’s coming along. I should be back to my old self in no time.”

Interesting potential 1st/2ndround matches:
Murray- Tomic - (Dimitrov in the next round)
Melzer-Berankis
Djokovic- Rosol
Dolgopolov-Davydenko
Simon-Hewitt
Paire-Llodra (this is a definite anti-Paire conspiracy!!!!!)
Harrison-Blake
Not bad

Re: ATP 1000: Miami
Yes good article (Bodo's) actually.
Clearly looks like I am not the only who got wrong footed by Nadal's early come back to the top. He certainly did it in 2010 but then it was clear to me that there was nothing wrong with Nadal knees in 2009 and that his Wimby 2009 withdrawal was also the result of a silent ban.
No-one to this day can explain why Nadal lost so much weight in fall 09 and then being pumped up back to ridiculous levels of fitness for his 2010 clay season. All the talk in 2009 about his knees was that he lost weight to releive the pressure on those...when clearly that was certainly not the case, everybody forgot to ask why he had lost that much weight then?
Same thing here...we wonder what was wrong with those knees in the first place. He played 4 tournaments in 6 weeks and finished flying on the court like we never saw him before. He is going to run non stop till Wimbledon with knees better than ever...unless of course he gets beaten as it certainly can happen. Then I am sure we will hear about the knees again.
For those who watch the match yesterday It may not have gone unoticed that Nadal felt someting weird on his knee or leg when trailing a set and break. He fiddled a bit with his shoe, tapped the heel, extended his leg, lifting his foot. Something wasn;t quite right.....untill Delpo tired and then everything felt fine again, especially after breaking back in that second set. Never did we twick his leg and foot despite running a few more miles.

Re: ATP 1000: Miami
In hindsight, to me, one of the most nauseous aspects of this saga was Nadal's "not knowing" whether his knees would be up for Indian Wells right up to the last day before the draw.

Larry & Ion somewhere on some yacht in the Pacific....
LARRY: See, Ion, you may have been a tennis player, but my tournament's better than yours.
ION: No way! I've got models for ballgirls, I managed to snatch that prime spring spot from the Germans, I had Roger and Serena as champions last year....I even had blue clay!!! The only thing Nadal moaned to Pope so I can't have it any more....even the poor guy's resigned, he couldn't take it any more...
LARRY: Well, if you were smart like me, you could've kept it, now come closer and I'll let you into a secret....

Miami probably tried to add as much sand but Nadal asked for pebbles to make sure he could win.

Yep! Imagine what goes on behind closed doors....no wonder players think he's from another planet...It must be truly demoralising for them. I can't really imagine anyone else carry on like that, and I don't remember anyone in tennis history being that chummy with organisers, do you?

Re: ATP 1000: Miami
His success was so dependant of this extra time he took, a good draw and the loosening up of the anti-doping that clearly it woudl be stupid to think that conditions were not designed around him.
He won 4 slams on clay before being able to win elwhere. Just shows how much his game dependant on certain conditions.
He did well to believe he coudl win elswhere by turning matches around v Querrey and Youzhny at Wimbledon cause without those key matches, his Wimbledon record may have been very different.
I am actually glad he is back...and back to full speed but I am just annoyed or worried that like in IW too much things are happening behind teh curtain to make sure he can win key matches by standing 5m behind the baseline.

I am not. Because he just can't be back like any other player. He has to manipulate the rules to suit his self-serving ambitions. Just watch how things slowly slide back to where they used to be.
The pros of him leveling the draw and making it more interesting are heavily outweighed but the cons of this unhealthy atmosphere he carries about him.
I'm not expecting any more Edberg awards for him....

More than ever, I want him to get beaten by the opposition. I am more interested in his losses than Fed's wins nowadays. Especially since he came back and won. Can you imagine him now retiring? "Vini, vidi, vici...I am teh best when fit...I can retire peacefully". I want more losses from Zeballos, Rosol or Mayer and more so from teh current guys at teh top and I know they are better on most surfaces....I even think they are better on clay too but I need to see it.

I also asked myself, what gives me the most pleasure when watching tennis. The answer was limited only to two options.
Either Nole's win or to see dismantling of Moribundus? Not easy to answer. But, the most gorgeous moments are when seeing how Nole brushes Moribundus. These are the invaluable tennis moments

I cannot believe how fearful Nadal is there. His shots barely cross the net. Djoko does nothing but hitting R and L and Nadal simply brings the ball back until Djoko has created enough space to go for a pacier shot.

Yes so I guess nothing comes better as Djoko beating Nadal.
Same here with Fed beating Nadal on clay...just happened too rarely though and never at the FO.....but once on Nadal's soil!

no. Just plenty of line cleaning before serving etc....Their previous match in 2009 there took about 4 hours I think.

It looks easy on screen, but not so easy to do on the court. I can estimate that about an half of hour Mori cleaned BL and scratched everything around. Now I am not sure wheter he still does his nice cleaning work of BL or not. He actually does not have enough time to clean it properly with 25 sec rule. If he still does it then that has to be slapdashTenez wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9LpbADnmMc [/quote[/url]]noleisthebest wrote:This is my personal favourite

About 5 PM UK time Paire playing Llodra, followed by Melzer v. Berankis; 12.30 Harrison vs Blake

So, it is time for predictions. Nowadays it is not a big problem to predict due to consistency of top players. It seems to be that Delpo is back to his former great form, now we can speculate if his body can withstand the following master after his great last week. I am for the final between Nole and Berd and winner is nobody else than Nole.
Hopefully his elbow is going to be ok and ready for Miami.

Yes, it would be Nole's 3rd consecutive Miami (like AO) if he could do it. No live streams yet, so don't know the speed of court.
Delpo will be a tough opponent in RG.
He's the sort of player that really knocks it out of you and leaves you drained for the next match.
It's a shame Fed is not playing.

Today in Miami:
Gicquel-Tomic
Nieminen-Nalbandian
Bellucci- Christian Harrison (apparently Ryan's younger, more talented brother)
Andujar-Troicki
Goffin-Haase
Dodig-Lacko etc....
Last night, Blake beat Ryan Harrison in two easy sets. Also through Davydenko, Hewitt. LLodra, Mallise, Melzer...setting up some great 2nd round amtches:
Dolgopolov-Davydenko, Simon- Hewitt, Llodra-Fognini, Blake-Bennetteau
Streaming starts tomorrow, so should be fun.

Ryan seems to have lost the plot. He is going backwards with his tennis. He used to have a forehand and now that forehand is just a rallying push-shot for him. He has lost his distinctive game like Raonic last year.

Tenez wrote:A bit like Berankis as well then.
I hope not.
I have only seen Beraniks play at AO this year, and I really liked his game and approach. His problem after AO was having to play qualifying matches, which he was often losing in tight three setters, almost always involving TBs. So, he's there on the verge of some kind of breakthrough, like Paire (though a level down in terms of ranking), but it's not happening for him.
Harrison on the other hand, from being a promising attacker who was exciting to watch and challenging good players, went down like lead balloon both with his tennis and results, he is not losing matches tightly, he is being trounced.
And only two years ago he was neck and neck with Raonic.
I think Americans can be a bit suffocating with their desperate hope for the next slam winner and burden their young players with unrealistic expectations.

Re: ATP 1000: Miami
Found out this happened in last night's match between Paire and Llodra:
Michael Llodra and Benoit Paire get into a major spat during their first-round match in Miami, which was won by Llodra, 7-6 (7), 6-2.The AFP and L'Equipe both reported that after Paire was complaining to the chair umpire about a line call, Llodra told him not to “act like a little sh--. "
The 38th-ranked Paire then told Llodra not to speak to him like that or treat him like a dog, to which Llodra allegedly responded: "Shut up. I'm eight years older than you; you owe me respect."
After Llodra rallied to win the first set, he said Paire lost his concentration. "I knew that if I won the first set, he was flipping out,” Llodra said.
Paire, who beat Llodra in their lone prior meeting in the Montpellier semifinals last month, refused to shake hands after the match, and told L'Equipe:"Mika did everything to destabilize me while I was dominating the game quietly. He clearly and deliberately insulted me. I won’t talk to him anymore."
