Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Problem with Thiem is that he is very much like Muster...a one dimensional baseliner....Like Nadal but unfortunately with a SHBH whihc makes him a tiny bit less good....meaning much less successful.
Like Muster, Thiem will not do anything good on grass.

Thiem just repeating last 2 years, total burn-out on Clay and useless for the rest of the season, or maybe he done the math that he is no good outside clay and give it all on clay and coast on grass/hc and collect enough points to go to WTF, good enough.
Needs Norman to work his magic on him Stan style, channel that power and variety.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
I was not that impressed by his FO performances. I did not see too much of him, but from what I saw he looked no better than this time last year - maybe even worse. He looked better than earlier this season - but he could not have possibly continued to play so poorly for too long.Tenez wrote:Don't know. I did not watch his match.....but from what I saw at the FO, he is improving seriously.summerblues wrote:Was he playing well? He is supposed to win these kinds of matches even on poor form. Remember, last year he was playing no good and still won Eastbourne. Everything I have seen from him so far this year is telling me he is very far from being competitive.Tenez wrote:I think Djoko could be a good bet for Wimbledon. It looks like he is hitting form again.
I do not expect him to go deep at Wimbledon. Still, he would be a tough early round draw if say Federer had to play him in Rd3.

Thiem is a clay courter. He will find it hard to do well on grass.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Thiem being the usual Thiem. One good tournament followed by a very poor one.

But I forgive Muster. He was forced to become a clay court specialist after his injury - his knee was no longer good enough to allow him to become truly versatile.Tenez wrote:Problem with Thiem is that he is very much like Muster...a one dimensional baseliner...

Do you believe that? His knee was good enough to rally senselessly at nausea. There was nothing wrong with his knee. he was known to be a rallying beast....and for that you need pretty good knees.

Yeah, I don't recall Muster reverting to the beast he was because of that. I might be wrong, I eliminated most memory of his hideous game from my memory.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Watching Halle and Queens stereo again...
Queens looks slower...or maybe that's because of the boring baseline tennis Edmund and Kyrgios are playing.
Fed and Paire producing some very nice play.
I can't believe how sharp Fed is.
Paiting lines with his FH like he's never had a day's break...and we are talking grass tennis here.
Even returning with topshpin BH almost casually...he really is loving grass.
Coming across as super relaxed.
I suppose you have to be if you are playing his game.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
And while I was typing all this Paire managed to break Fed.
Kyrgios in the other match manages to lose both his serves at the start of the TB.
That is unacceptable for a server of his calibre.
What a dull match....Dimi-Nole should be more interesting.

Horror!
Fed was a bit too relaxed...
And then went straight into - nobody bagels ME on grass mode.

what is it with tennis players that they have to go through the bleached blond hair phase....
Fed, Thiem, Paire...they all look(ed) disgusting!

Funny how Fed went walkies and then just turned his game on to 5th gear.
Just so Paire knows who the boss is.
It would be pretty impressive if he could claw this set back.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
I must say I find DBH (even as nice as Paire's) a real eyesore on grass.
They should ban the monstrosity.
Here comes the handgrenade
I genuinely believe DBH should go into disabled tennis!

But at least on grass they are typically least efficient.

Is he playing better this set? First set he;s lost to Paire, who he usually beats comfortably.

I didn't see the first set.luvsports! wrote:Is he playing better this set? First set he;s lost to Paire, who he usually beats comfortably.
He played well the beginning of second but was quite relaxed, Paire took the momentum for a few games and ran away with the set.
Fed did wake up to win three games and now finding it difficult to break Paire. Let's not forget this is not clay....
I don't think he is tanking at all, looking quite livid with himself...a bit like when he was losing to Delpo. He wants to go to Wimbledon as no1.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Paire's improved his FH a lot...
Paire saved the BP with a great serve, after that Fed netted a FH.
Things really happen quickly on grass.

The Man is amazing.
After netting a slice BH off Paire's BH which caught the net for 15:15, Fed pulls off in the 6th gear and leaves Paire in the dust!
A-WE-SO-ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Noone has ever and will ever play the game like him!

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Oh did he get away from that one? After Paire's lucky net point in that TB I thought that was the end of Fed.
I'd be interested to see the stats of Fed's serve. Most likely lower pace and less accurate after that first set.
