Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
What a dreadful match that Djokovic/Dimitrov match was. Queens not having much in the way of decent matches sadly.

Federer has to save match points vs Benoit "No Forehand" Paire? On grass? What has the world come to? Not very reassuring.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Fed was again in his 'lost focus' state after how comfortably he won the 1st set and the how aweful Paire was throwing away his racquet at every single point. Fed had BPs in the opening game of 2nd set, and lost those. And after that gets broken himself.summerblues wrote:Federer has to save match points vs Benoit "No Forehand" Paire? On grass? Somehow held the some focus in the 3rd and helped by Paire's own mistakes.
Fed has lost many such matches. Latest one I remember was WTF Semis against Goffin.

Wow!
A dinosaur on Halle CC!
M. Ebden, a classic S&V, catch the glimpse while you can!

Some exquisite passes from Fed, but Ebden holding his own.
Cool match.
Classic grass tennis, if anything Fed looks out of place being on the baseline, but maaan when he gets to the net those volleys sizzle!!!!

Ebden has played very well. Average service games under 2 minutes!

Goodness how bo3 grass-court games can be crap-shoots.
Perhaps it's a measure of Fed's brilliance that he has thus far found a way to win such a high proportion of these crap-shoots.

Enjoyed that set of tennis. I love games in where it's pretty evenly balanced and a moment of brilliance in a tiebreak determines the set. Nothing tells the truth like those moments. That BH on the first TB point was that moment.

Well, Ebden had no chance in the TB, all his averageness was exposed, 2nd serve, groundstrokes....TB tells it all!legendkillar wrote:Enjoyed that set of tennis. He did if he kept his first serves up. No surprise the points won against serve were on his second serve.
I don't think Ebden can play that well for another set let alone 2.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Fed's flights to the net have been outstanding, good that he played Ebden who kept him on his feet with his S&V-ing.
Not often that you see Fed wrong-footed.
But he's already adjusted and fine-tuned the footwork.
In that respect, this is a very good match for his grass prep.

Hehe, funny how even a S&V-er finds a way of exploiting the SBH corner.
Ebden volleying almost exclusively right into the BH corner and drawing errors easily.
Though he keeps Fed on his feet by going for the FH occasionally because Fed passes him from there really well.
Anyway...much tougher on the nerves for both players.

No 1st serve for Fed and he gets broken.
I expect him to roar back an annihilate the Dinasour of Oz.

This Fed ain't going to win Wimbeldon.

Oh I love this grass court tennis. Its so much fun watching both players playing all out strike-first tennis.
Anyone remember wimbledon 2103 when Sergiy Stakhovsky beat Fed.?

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Even a misfiring Fed really should sweep Kudla aside; I expect Coric to be waiting in the final for whoever wins on Fed's side. Coric gave Fed one hell of a tough match at IW.
Will Fed end up regretting playing 4 matches winning at Stuttgart? Even if Fed loses tomorrow he'll have played 8 matches in the grass run-up to Wimbledon, more than he's ever done before.
I hope he's fresh when he gets to Wimbledon.

8 or 4 I don't reckon it makes that big a difference at this stage.barrystar wrote:Even a misfiring Fed really should sweep Kudla aside; I expect Coric to be waiting in the final for whoever wins on Fed's side. Coric gave Fed one hell of a tough match at IW.

He'll get tired in Wimbledon in week one anyway even if he wins everything in straight sets.
Hopefully he gets a decent draw and a bit of luck. He is the best on grass, so in theory Wimbledon is his.
Not sure why his first serve was wobbly...but he served well when he really needed it.
I just think it's mentally taxing for now...him the way he plays with everyone able to send another ball back even on grass these days.

You have to look beyond the win! he is playing really poor players and yet gets broken so many times.
This is simply not a Federer who can win Wimbeldon. He will have to tighten his game.....and I am sure he knows it.

Of course, I doubt he’s really got his toe down. After all Wimbledon isn’t won at Halle, this time last year he was battling past Khachanov.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Don't know what to make of Fed. He has been dropping sets and struggling against opponents he should be dismissing easily.
However, in the only match I actually saw - vs Kyrgios last week - I thought he looked very good. He looked like he was not trying much at all, and yet he beat a well playing Nick. I also saw final set TB vs Paire. There likewise - in spite of its closeness - I thought Fed looked quite good.
So I am cautiously optimistic for Wimbledon.

Re: Gerry Webber Open Halle & Queens
Federer has yet to lose a match on grass and everyone is worried...Only on OTF
I haven't seen any action from Halle though but Federer always played far from his sparkling best there. Even in his most dominant years he barely scraped through against Ollie Rochus (4 mps's!)
I'm not worried about his form, it's just questionable if he still can play 7 Bo5 matches at 37.
Nevertheless, he's top favorite to win Wimbledon.
This afternoon in Queens will tell us more about the other favorites. The result of Cilic-Kyrgios imo will be decisive who'll be the second fav. And if Nole wins Queens, he's probably the worst opponant Fed could get in the latter rounds.

I suppose the wannabe GOAT is going to be of the picture on the biggest tennis stage...again!
Cilic-Kyrgios should be good, don’t know their H2H, very close call as neither are that great at returning.
Cilic is steadier and confident these days, Kyrgios has a better serve.
I really don’t know who would be the lesser of two evils vs Fed on CC. If Fed serves well neiher probably.
For Nole it would def be Kyrgios, I don’t think he’s ever beaten him.
Nole is back to “rallying” on grass and is still about 20% behind his 2015 form.
So, I’d say Cilic is the second favoirite...the rest will depend heavily on draw.
