Federer doesn't need 6 months off, this is ridiculous. He was playing beautifully at Wimbledon and has since rested.

He's coming back from probably a real rest, the Court is faster than he thought (he says) and it's just comeback tennis.

In that case he is relying from Zverev to keep the rally short...very different from playing those who wish to extend the rally.

I agree he is not SVing nearly as much as he should but that's because he wants to be in the lead before doing so otherwise he can lose sets easily.

It would be awesome to see Baby Fed3-Fed final.

Fed broke Agut yesterday only cause he went S&V after every serve on those games.

To me, Federer looked pretty bored vs Agut yesterday.

He wanted the match to be over in 5 minutes, yet had to go through the motions.

Still was easier then with Ferret, but looks like he does not really want to be in that court.

Fed is playing less aggressive than he was playing in 2015 because he trusts his baseline game more than he did back then. In 2015 he worked on his all-out attacking game because he had no other options. And he perfected it to the point that he had a decent chance against a top form Djokovic. Now he is in the beautiful position where his attacking game is as good as in 2015, plus he can trust his baseline game.

It is very nice to be Federer in 2017.

I see Fed is in Cincy draw, which means he is not pulling out. I hope he will have enough common sense to suffer a surprising dip in form in his first or second match there.

That said, it is worth noting that if Rafa and Fed meet in the Cincy final, they will be also playing for the #1 spot.

I don't like the "surprising dip" appearances.
They are dishonourable.

Either enter and play to win, or don't bother entering, how ever much sponsors may want to,

And what chance federer will have to beat Nadal then after 10 matches or so in 2 weeks? nil?

As long as fed is in the top 2 in the USO, he is fine. The main thing for him is to be protected by the schedule which seems to be the case here in Montreal.

I really don't mind them. They can be subconscious even.

Subconscious is what he is doing in Montreal. Dragging his feet.
A bit of a chore.
Don't blame him in a way. Fans and TDs are happy.
And his accountant.

I think Federer will try to win this and Cincy. His matches aren't long, they'll be even less so in Ohio, and then he takes a week off to settle down. I really don't see this as an issue for him.

The ideal tournament thus far for Federer. Certainly has to be nailed on cert to get the No.1

Never thought I would stumped to figure out who the competition is.

Not so certain about #1 after Cincy, Nadal has a very easy draw and Federer has a number of threats.

I think he'll get there but might have to wait.

Pretty straightforward set for Federer. Haase came into it at the end.

These mud pit courts seriously need destroying and rebuilding.

Indeed. Looking at like since the dawn of time records, he'd equal Lendl, on 94 and be one behind Riggs. After that is Connors on 109

Again,  dull and smug tennis from Zverev. To me, worse than any of the RRs.
The worst, he really thinks he is the daddy among the young players.

He may be the highest ranked of them, but that doesn't guarantee anything, or that he will be winning slams in a few years time when thenotjers catch up on experience.

In the meantime, I hope Fed sits him on his backside tonight.

It is going to be a much closer match than Halle. That's for sure.

Actually Zverev reminds me of Coric 2 years ago.

Flashy start due to advanced fitness and then hit the wall   with it as there was not much in the reservoir, or "no few extra gears" as Fed calls it.
