More supple joints, quicker recovery.
Seriously that's your argument?
So you are telling me that in light of the following between Wimbledon and now:
Agut
Went to Switzerland to play a clay event. Played 3 matches there.
Then came to Montreal a hard court event. Had significantly more time on court.
Federer
3 weeks with no matches played.
Went to Montreal. Played less matches and significantly less court time.
Then after all that, Federer won't be fresher than Agut? If that truly is the case, without a doubt that would make Federer the most unprofessional player to have ever played the game. Period.

I don;t think you realise what it is to be 36 and playing at this level. There is a reason why 90% of atp players stop before that age.legendkillar wrote:Tenez wrote:legendkillar wrote:
I am not disputing aches or pains. I am disputing him being tired after 2 matches!
He hasn't played a full season this year. Tiredness is not going to be a huge factor in Federer's performance in Montreal. Yes it was a poor performance yesterday by his lofty standards, but I wouldn't be too concerned. Agut struggled yesterday to put Monfils to bed. I can't imagine there will be a big swing in form for him.
Well as I said, I meant stiffness and aching....which is the result of tiredness after a match. Even the loss of the first set v Ferrer, is to me most likely the result of aching/stiffness. Once his body got warm, he was able to retrieve his game. Even in Wimbledon, that was often a pattern...difficult start then easing into the match.
Now playing 3 times in a row makes it even harder.
Or just poor form. He isn't going to be physically disadvantaged more so than Agut. Not a chance. On the back of 1 tricky match we are now saying Federer is on the back foot despite Agut struggling more so against an opponent who was struggling physically badly.
It feels like this is excuses at the ready if by some miracle Agut downs Federer.
I see no reason to panic just because he struggled against Ferrer.
Don't mention excuses....it's not my style, you should know by now. Remember it's me who says all top players have been beaten by better players before their decline.

I am so tempted to put money on Federer not winning Canada...and even less likely to win Cincy if he goes far here.

Or reasons. I don't think you realise exactly what you are implying. If Federer couldn't recover from 1 match on the back of his first match in a tournament, he wouldn't play the sport. It's that simple. He missed the Clay for that reason I'd suspect. If Federer had played a full season, I'd be in some agreement with you, but he hasn't played a full season since 2015. Granted large part of that was to injury, but that was still time away from the court. If Federer or any tennis pro for that matter at 36 felt like after 2 matches in a tournament their body could not hold up, they would retire.
Federer had a 3 week break between Wimbledon and now, the rest of the field in the tournament have all played events in between. You and TAFKANITB are totally underplaying the advantage of having such a break, especially when ranking isn't an issue.

Long breaks don't matter nearly as much as playing in succession.
I am not saying Federer will lose tonight, especially knowing now that Agut will probably be stiff too but I will not be very surprised if Zverev wins the whole thing.

They have an influence Ten. Especially when players are older and susceptible to more niggles. If it didn't matter, Federer wouldn't have skipped Clay.

OK, after a year if he doesn't make any excuses for it you have to admit your prediction was wrong.Daniel wrote:I didn't say Nadal definitely would do that - only that he has a track record of doing so. And I have another year or more to wait before I am happy he won't.
This is where biases come in. I didn't think Nadal's argument with the umpire was that bad, but you mention that while you forget to mention Fed getting annoyed and getting official warning for smashing ball into crowd.Daniel wrote:
Nadal was also at his humble best today too - shouting odds at the umpire.

Q. Did you underestimate Denis?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. I am not this kind of person. I respect everybody.
Yeah, obviously is a tough lose for me. Is a bad lose. Probably is the worst lose of the year we have, without a doubt, for me.
That's like this. He play well. I play really bad. When this kind of thing happen, only thing you can do is wish the opponent the best, all the best.

ROGER FEDERER: .....Yeah, in the juniors, I just felt sometimes when I used to play guys, you know, somewhere in the world where I felt like technically maybe they were struggling. I just felt like, Oh, he's trying so hard, he's such a fighter. I don't know, I feel like probably he works harder than I do, so he probably deserves it more. Then he beat me and I'm like, I feel so bad. I'm such an idiot for falling into that trap.

That's for LS about Ferrer's question on talent!RF wrote:David had his role. He plays extremely early and plays deep and hard. A lot of the times you have to play up. It's going to be similar tomorrow against Bautista.

As it is already 7:00 and I'm tired, I need treatment, I won't go out to the practice courts and work on my game. All I have tomorrow is 20 minutes in the warmup to just get the body woken up, then I go back into the match. So I have zero time to work on anything.

Rubbish standard from Federer, he's played like this since the first match (despite the score, the opponent was useless).
Still, only Hasse standing in the way of the final.

Funny, I had the same idea.
He went to a Dubai, threw a match early then went to IW/Miami & won them.
Went to Stuttgart, ditto, then won Halle & Wimbledon.
I think the plan might have been not to take Montreal too seriously.

Seems so, acclimatize to Canada/USA with as little effort as possible before USO.
With Nadal out, today he was better than yesterday, wants the title now I guess.

Maybe he'd like to go to New York as the new #1.

Meanwhile, Shapovalov needs to be more careful around the net. The number of horrible errors he makes there - both today and last night - is inexcusable.

Zverev vs Shapovalov it is. Two youngsters, one of them will be in the Masters 1000 final. Zverev is quite steady and looks confident, but I think Shapovalov has a chance if he continues the way he has been playing.
It will be interesting. A German vs a Canadian.
Zverev still has an outside chance to finish the year at No 1 if he somehow manages to win the USO.

Shapovalov has balls (now inside the top 100 - has climbed 327 places). He's showing more balls in 2 matches than Nishikori and Tomic have their entire lives. He's a winner. Some young talent finally worth shouting about. Zverev and Shapovalov are going to win big.

Quite possible.
Still, that is exactly how Ostapenko wins.
She keeps going and trusts herself.
Manna was 5:0 up in the first set drawing errors from Shapa, yet he lost.
Zverev is obviously more physical than Manna so that may make the difference today, but I hope not.

He is probably surprised to find himself in this position now, knocking on the door of the third slam this year.
Sure, he wants to go and win it all, but you can tell, by his BH he needs another 6 months off.
He is between the rock and a hard place atm.
But knowing him, he'll nail both (the rock and the hard place).
Maybe he's found new motivation - chatting to his slam trophies, thinking where to take the next one to.
That's enough for me!
