ATP 250: Brisbane, Doha, Chennai
ATP 2014 starts in a few hours.
Yes, despite a few painfully boring days of December, just as I got used to the off-season and all it brings, suddenly, it's time to "wake up", shake off glutenous stupor of Christmas and start watching live tennis matches in those silly hours again.
All the big names except Nole are in action, and there is so much to look forward to:
Federer returns healthy, fit, with a bigger frame, and if that's not enough, he adds Stefan Edberg to his expanding (family) box.
Murray comes back from his injury break, and from what I could see in a few Abu Dhabi photos, he is ready fitness wise.
Nadal brings nothing new, and why should he....according to Woodbridge, balls at AO seem to be tailor-made for his game (anyone surprised?)
In the new coach off-season fashion craze, Ferrer does the black sheep thing and sacks his coach of 15 years, so he is free as a bird now. Looking as fit and eager as ever.
My personal moment comes with Benoit Paire who I look forward to seeing in Chennai. I hope he builds on last year's breakthrough, continues to be injury-free and plays his lovely tennis.
So...here we go:
ATP 250 Brisbane, Outdoor Hard
The Brisbane International 2013, presented by Suncorp was the fifth anniversary of the event which is located at the Queensland Tennis Centre in close proximity to the Brisbane CBD. Andy Murray won back-to-back titles in 2012-13 and is undefeated on Pat Rafter Arena. Previous champions also include Radek Stepanek (CZE), Andy Roddick (US) & Robin Soderling (SWE). The Brisbane International has built a reputation for delivering world class entertainment, both on and off the court.
Players:
Federer, Simon, Dimitrov, Hewitt, Nishikori, Mahut, Melzer, Benneteau, Chardy, (Berankis playing Quals),
Draw:

ATP 250 Doha, Outdoor Hard
Many of the world's best tennis players open their season campaigns at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, one of two ATP World Tour events held in the Middle East. Three-time Doha champion Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal helped kick off the 2012 ATP World Tour in style by playing tennis at sunset in the spectacular Katara amphitheatre in Doha, surrounded by more than 4,000 burning Roman candles
Players:
Dolgopolov, Nadal, Ferrer, Murray, Berdych, Gasquet, Kholschriber, Gasquet, Gulbis, Davydenko (Krajinovic, Brown, Evans playing Quals)
Draw:

Order Of Play:

ATP250 CHENNAI, Indoor Hard
The Aircel Chennai Open, India’s only ATP World Tour stop, is one of three tournaments held in the opening week of the season. The ATP World Tour 250 event, first held in 1996, has built a strong legacy for being a “Springboard of Champions”, with former winners including Grand Slam champions Pat Rafter and Carlos Moya.
Players:
Paire, Wawrinka, Youzhny, Fognini, Pospisil, Vasselin, Lacko (Lajovic, the DC final legend, playing Quals)

I have not seen a match between Panfil and Raonic at Hopman cup, but that is something when a player ranked 288 beats a new coming star. That is quite disappointing with Rao.
Btw, I saw a match of Stepanek, 35 yo and he played really well. He seems to be a fireball, of course due to Petra Kvitova

Back to posting on OTF and on regular basis like before.
Hi everyone . I
I'll be going to Chennai Open this Friday Jan, 3rd 2014, the QF day. You all must have been to Slams and many of those, but this ATP 250 would be special one for me. It will be the first ATP tournament I'll get to see LIVE!.
My favourite player Stanley Wawrinka is playing.

Although I've never thought much of Raonic's 'star' potential, even I am surprised by this loss.
Maybe that Panfil is a really good player!
I know conditions are slow and serve is not a weapon as it once was, but, surely, Raonic could do better with it.
I have observed him, and he is fine against lower ranked players, but when he faces the top ones he freezes, panics, loses his composure and the serve. And then you see how 1D he is without it, like fish out of water.
I hope he can fix that problem with experience.
As for Step the old dog....I give up!
I saw a photo of Petra and him in front of a Christmas tree, he looks tiny next to her, so maybe he will finally be starting to behave himself.

I'm from Kolkata originally (live in London), but do pop to Chennai from time to time; last time I got to see the stadium which was nice but unfortunately it was the week before the tournament started.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Back to posting on OTF and on regular basis like before.

Is Berdych playing in Chennai this time? A Berdych Stan final would be good fun.

Karlovic takes down Berdych and makes their h2h 4-1. I think this is as far as Berdych can go in his career. Be a consistent top-10 player, have some rare odd wins the against top-4, slam-TMS QF, and maybe 1-2 titles in a year.

Re: ATP 250: Brisbane, Doha, Chennai
It was lovely to see hungry and healthy Fed again win his first match of the season with the new racquet 6:4 6:2.
Lefty Nieminen who is always difficult in Brisbane (I remember him beating Nole who played with his new racquet back in 2009 and preventing him from taking number 2 from Fed just before AO), and was a perfect opponent to test Fed's baseline consistence.
It turned out he didn't even have a chance, because rallies did not get long thanks to Fed's magic footwork.
I noticed he had plenty of time on his shots and played with confidence.
The confidence will obviously still be fragile for some time, but a win in Brisbane would be enough to see him a title contender in Melbourne.
He really looks ready.
Serving was better esp the 1st serve, quite heavy.
Look forward to his next match.

Haven't had much time to see anything except Fed's match this week, but looking at the results, it seems Nadal is struggling yet managing to win his matches, Murray - rusty and far from last year's AO final form (knocked out by F. Mayer from a set up today). Fed- ready, gathering momentum and fine tuning his game.
Dimitrov lost in the first round.
The match to see tomorrow:
Gulbis-Nadal
Go Earnie!!!!!

Re: ATP 250: Brisbane, Doha, Chennai
Brown actually plays more attractive tennis and you can see he really loves it and enjoys himself immensely.
Mannarino is a smoother and finer ball-striker, quite exquisite, in fact.
I watched Mannarino beat Brown live in Wimbledon last summer, from a neighbouring court as I think it was court 14 was packed.
It was Friday.
Then I saw Mannarino's next match as well sat on the stairs virtually next to the service line courtside and I caould fully enjoy and appreciate his talent, especially his serving.
He is very light and has slight build and is an utter miracle on the court.
Chooses to stay on the base-line too much, that's my only criticism of him.

It's beginning to bore me seeing the same players winning every tournament and doing well in every tournament. Not because they have real talent, but because conditions are so utterly dumbed down. How much longer are people going to buy this twaddle?

Federer -Matosevic starting.
Matosevic takes tennis blandness to a new ugly level. He makes Granollers look fun.
It's actually shocking to see the chasm in class even in the way they warm up their volleys!

6:1, 6:1
That was truly pathetic from Matosevic.
Not only did he take ages between the points (which were all pretty short), towelled after a serve winner, faked he was going to faint every time he lamely netted an easy volley, threw water bottles over his shoulder in disgust...he even tried to disrupt Federer's rhythm asking for a neck massage....
So, not even a decent practice session for Federer who served OK and did have to occassionaly deal with some fast, hard-hit balls from Matosevic.
FH still needs a bit of fine-tuning, as well as fast lower balls comong to his BH.
But you can see that once he gets a few more matches and tournaments under his belt he is going to be lethal with this new racquet.
