If he eventually wins this game, Thiem really needs to make a serious push on Nadal's service game.
All out. Come what may.

Djokovic did not need to overdo it.  He could rally with Rafa indefinitely.  Nobody else can.

He couldn't even if he wanted to. Nadal was always fitter than him.

You've got to be pretty stupid to want to, though. It simply too exhausting on every level.

Rafa was broken five times in his first eight service games vs Schwartzman.  He has only been broken once since then.

Part of the reason is, I would say, that neither Delpo nor Thiem (though for different reasons) have BHs that can put pressure on Rafa.

Thiems problem is that no one wastes so much energy on court like him, mega hits 4 meters from baseline, so just enough that when he arrives in a Final of GS, he is burned totally.

I'm sure he would beat Rafa in 1st or 2nd round.

From my perspective, Rafa's win in the final (or indeed, his entire RG) was disappointing two-fold.  First, he got another slam.  Second, not only did Thiem lose, but he appears no closer to Rafa than he did last year.  So, once again, we do not have anyone who looks hopeful to start taking over from Rafa.

why would they be "buthurt".
The French are renowned for their exquisite taste in food. They had enough of 99p cheeseburger Nadal's been serving them all these years.

1) He beats Federer - easily
2) He's not French - even worse he's Spanish
3) They can't appreciate good tennis outside of their narrow definition of it - they're snobs

Federer has been told that sliding on clay will do his knees. The only mystery to me is why he’s not formally called it a day on it.

Indeed.. such a stupid thought. Nadal would've crushed him (not that he would have made the final anyway) and restored some of that mental ownage.

It's more interesting to let others speculate. Better for business, sponsorship, interest etc, etc - Fed's pretty savvy when it comes to PR

*yawn*

Briefly followed the tournament.  Nadal lucked out v Zverev with a rain delay in the Masters event and did the same here.  He's lucky he was even in the final.

As for the final, Thiem did as expected... He's a bottle job.  There's a reason Zverev has 3 masters titles and Thiem is 3 time finalist.

This is the weakest clay era there has ever been.  It's a useless defensive surface anyway.  I prefer variety and talent i.e., grass.

Counting down the days that we will finally be rid of this cheat.  Big Grin   It's coming.

He'll always be behind Fed in 3 of the 4 slams and at tour finals no matter how many FO he wins.

11 slams in the same tournament is simply crazy

one could feel that maybe he could have lost to Nole in 2011, but novak didnt make the final, apart from that and obviously 2015 and 2016, nadal has been the clear  favourite in the tournament for over a decade and a half

So Nadal is second great. Well the magic Senna said a word for being second, it's being the first of losers  Big Grin

But still no one is disputing Nadals credentials, just that he is a clay great and in general sucks as a sportsman, nor matter how much Nike sells us a Fed/Nadal friendship.

Just a price negotiating trick maybe, unless something personal. Would be weird wearing Djoko's crap UniNoClue, and why do it 1-2y before quitting the sport?

Thx for the link.

Edit: so from 10M a year, Uniq offering 30M for 10 years? What math is that?

Don't say per year man, just: Uniqlo would be prepared to pay Federer $30m (about £22.5m) over the next 10 years. Over vs per.
