Rafa was broken five times in his first eight service games vs Schwartzman. He has only been broken once since then.

Part of the reason is, I would say, that neither Delpo nor Thiem (though for different reasons) have BHs that can put pressure on Rafa.

Thiems problem is that no one wastes so much energy on court like him, mega hits 4 meters from baseline, so just enough that when he arrives in a Final of GS, he is burned totally.

I'm sure he would beat Rafa in 1st or 2nd round.

From my perspective, Rafa's win in the final (or indeed, his entire RG) was disappointing two-fold. First, he got another slam. Second, not only did Thiem lose, but he appears no closer to Rafa than he did last year. So, once again, we do not have anyone who looks hopeful to start taking over from Rafa.

Briefly followed the tournament. Nadal lucked out v Zverev with a rain delay in the Masters event and did the same here. He's lucky he was even in the final.

As for the final, Thiem did as expected... He's a bottle job. There's a reason Zverev has 3 masters titles and Thiem is 3 time finalist.

This is the weakest clay era there has ever been. It's a useless defensive surface anyway. I prefer variety and talent i.e., grass.

Counting down the days that we will finally be rid of this cheat. Big Grin

one could feel that maybe he could have lost to Nole in 2011, but novak didnt make the final, apart from that and obviously 2015 and 2016, nadal has been the clear favourite in the tournament for over a decade and a half
