The difference today is that quite a few players know now how to handle spin and are fitter. So those close matches he had then...can easily turn into losses today and that is affecting his confidence....plus the fact they are a bit stricter on the 25s rule.

I was just thinking of that match now, I remember staying up until 3am watching that. He's playing a lot better then, compared to now. Against Gabashvili in that match he didn't lose his serve, he was solid, just couldn't eat into return games for the first couple of sets. 
In this match he's playing hilariously bad shots every 2 minutes.

He doesn't hit as hard, his shots are shorter and lack power and he tires quicker.
The 25 second rule was in place in 2013 when he cleaned up. But imo, he still doesn't get pinged enough so that isn't a strong enough reason for his level drop.
Imo, he's clean, or at least cleaner.

For me, Nadal is just playing closer to the baseline and not having enough time to load his shots with spin.
He does it occasionally but not at will.

And that is enough to make a difference.

Against Nole he lasted a set in his 4m behind the baseline mode.
Mind you, those were some monster dead balls.

No, Gabashvili played very well that day, considerably better than Shwartz today.

Swatrz could/should have won that match in 3.....that is I guess the difference between Nadal now and Nadal then.

Nadal is on the decline and has been a while.  A victim of age, like all the other multiple champs that approach 30 and find it very hard to win slams like they once could.  This Nadal is there for the taking in every match he plays.  I've never seen him play as badly as this year.  I'm loving it, of course - but pretending this isn't decline is silly.

Nadal trying to do a chest bump a la Nole at the net to Shwartz but this one reluctant to mix sweat with Nadal!

Yes, but his BH is weak.
I admire he's chosen to play with it, but it's just not good enough for current era.

Kuku is swinging freely knowing he has nothing to lose whereas Dimi has too much pressure on himself.
