Re: Australian Open 2014 : MOTD : Day 2
It looks like it's going to be very hot in Melbourne in the next few days, 42C today.
I wonder if they are going to close the roof.
"http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/event_guide/a_z_guide.htmlExtreme Heat PolicyThe Australian Open Extreme Heat Policy (EHP) will be applied at the Referee's discretion and may be altered at any time.At the Referee's discretion, when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature only (WBGT) is equal to or above the pre-determined threshold, the Referee may suspend the commencement of any further matches on outside courts.Any matches currently in progress will continue until the end of the current set. At the completion of the set, play will be suspended.Where play in any match commences outdoors (or with a roof open) at the Referee's Discretion, the match will continue until the completion of the set. At the end of the set, a decision may be made by the Referee to close the roof for the remainder of the match and the following matches, when the EHP is still in effect. The roof will only be closed because of extreme heat if a decision has been made by the Referee to suspend the completion or commencement of matches on the outdoor courts.Supplement for women's singles and junior singles only; to allow a 10 minute break between the second and third sets when a WBGT reading of 28 has been recorded prior to the calling of the match by Tournament Control. Readings are continually made throughout the day.The 10 minute break will not apply between the second and third sets, if play had previously been suspended after the first set due to the EHP"

Good first round match from Fed.
Very difficult conditions to play.
Nice to see him in the middle of the night: a proper AO experience, beautiful, sunny and blue!

A few hours later..... Heavy eyelids, stiff from sleeping on a small sofa as I was too tired and lazy to move to the big one ... but wouldn't have it any other way.
Nothing a triple espresso won't fix, go Rusty!!!!! Â

Ouch tough for Hewitt! Losing after having MP! However glad Seppi won despite picking Hewitt. I don't particularly like Hewitt's marathon matches.

The first match win of the year for Seppi.

Re: Australian Open 2014 : MOTD : Day 2
Seppi is a nice guy, but his tennis is so bland.
I felt sorry for Hewitt in the last few games he couldn't go even on fumes, it's cruel to play in 40 degrees for 4 hours...
Happy Paire went through, was cheering him to the end of 1st TB (14:12) just by watching live scores.
Mannarino through as well to play Ferrer next.
Donald Young also in round 2 through his opponent retiring.
Lajovic through, as well!

Tomic doing a Murray, the only difference - he is not clutching his thigh, he is hobbling!
Good serving and great FH.
Go Bernie!

Did He? Woahhh.....Told you...Nadal's luck is really special...not that he would have lost but I think Tomic was not very bothered by the spin and could whack the ball. Nadal was really stretched in some of those rallies.

Its rare that Nadal isn't stretched in a match. But its not an uncomfortable position for him, we have seen it for many years.

I heard commentators talking about courts indeed playing faster this year. Not notice anything myself or heard any player talk about it, but it looks like.

I disagree. Tomic was striking the ball really well, esp his FH. Nadal didn't even bother to run some of them down which is really something considering how slow the court is.
Bernie on the other hand let a few quite returnable shots go past him as his leg was giving him a lot of trouble.
Nadal was so happy to see Tomic retire.

Happy? Ya he should be. A good 40 mins to get the feel of court and conditions. Nice practice, some relaxation with a quick win.

True but a full 3 or 4 sets can tire for the following rounds.

Nadal doesn't get tired. Not him. Djokovic too. They can outlast 2 players if given a chance .
