Australian Open 2014 : MOTD : Day 1
Hello everyone,
The first Grand Slam of 2014 commences and its going to a rollicking 2 weeks ride. But it starts off slow with bottom half playing on day1. The Defending champ is going to be in the Rod Laver arena in the evening.
Here are the matches for the day1. No negative points this time.
Good luck to everyone.
1.
Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) [8]
vs.
Andrey Golubev (KAZ) [33]
2.
Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) [33]
vs.
Denis Istomin (UZB) [33]
3.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) [33]
vs.
Tommy Haas (GER) [12]
4. Juan Monaco (ARG) [33]
vs.
Ernests Gulbis (LAT) [23]
5.
Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) [33]
vs.
Lukasz Kubot (POL) [33]
My picks:
1. Wawrinka
2. Baghdatis ( for the crowd support he will get here )
3. Haas
4. Gulbis
5. Davydenko

Well, the following are the reasons.noleisthebest wrote:Why are there no negative points now?
1. If people miss a day, it looks harsh on them that they lose points even when they didn't predict anything.
2. Easy to calculate points
3. Allows people to join the game at any stage.

I thought the negative points were quite a thrill, but maybe it was difficult to manage it in different time-zones.
Thanks for the game!

Re: Australian Open 2014 : MOTD : Day 1
Meanwhile, Day 2 schedule for the show courts has been released. Rafa playing at 7pm local time, i.e., 3am my time. I suspect I will miss this one; if it were later in the tournament, or if I had more confidence this will not be horribly one-sided, I would try to watch it, but as it is, I will just wake up to the final result.
Roger is playing second in the day session, so I should be able to watch his match.

Monaco-Gulbis going interesting. 1-1 sets. This could be a 5 setter.

ROTLA, any chance you can post MOTD for day #2? The full schedule is now out. If I do not get my predictions in now, I might not make it before day 2 starts. Cheers.

Re: Australian Open 2014 : MOTD : Day 1
It took me almost a set and a half to find a good stream for Nole's match
The good side was I saw a few other ones:
Johnson who melted against JJ after taking. 2:0 sets lead, really nice ball-striker, light on his feet, too. JJ downed him in 5. I smiled to myself when a HE replay was called, no HOW MANY TIIIIIMES? this year...
Then I saw Kvitova go out to some Thai equally nice ball-striker, lovely FH, really happy for her as she nearly choked her chances serving for the match twice.
Nole, with his champions haircut after a long time, only means one thing: he is in business!
Enjoyed seeing Becker in his box, who just like when he used to play showed a lot of passion, great choice for Nole to have him.
Nole served very well, returned very aggressively, even inside the baseline a couple of times.
Looked pretty sharp for the first round against fast playing Lacko, who unfortunately had the toughest draw of all.
He played a good match, esp 2nd set, just struggled to find the right balance between going for his shots and rallying.
He made a mistake of engaging in rallies and not attacking enough in a few games of that set and that was the match gone for him.
Enjoyed seeing him play and have fun at the same time. Shame he had to go out so early.
Also sad for Berankis who went out to Dolgo in 3 sets, first two 7:5.

Baggy lost in st. sets despite the whole Cypriot army of fans behind him. His 2006 AO spoils will definitely be seen as a flash in the pan. He just couldn't do it again.
Interesting character though.
