I must say I have picked it up at 4 all in the 5th and it's quite fun. The crowd certainly seems to enjoy it.

No not me. In lat years AO final both players were trying to hit harder but withing margins to force errors. This match hey both are only trying not to make any sort of errors themselves..
If a slug fest is all I have got to watch, I would prefer last year's final compared this gutless tennis.

Was quite impressed with Tomic. I tend to view him as someone who mostly plays lots of slices and junkballs, and hides his lack of quality behind that, but he looked very different this time. He was playing proper tennis, quite aggressive, often having Federer on the run. His serve and movement seem to have improved loads too. He hit some great shots.

Really? I did not notice that (trying to remember if my ESPN3 feed had any commercial breaks). That would be a shame.gallery play wrote:I heard Federer had a medical time out during the commercial break. Yes, again the lower back.

After Fed's match I briefly switched to Monfils - Simon. Whether I just picked a bad moment (that 71 shot rally was among the few I saw) or whether the whole match was like that, I do not know, but it was so so boring. Agree with whoever said that it was worse than last year's final. Neither player was trying to do anything with the ball - the way they played, even their retrieving skills were not being tested. It was like watching some nice and easy warm up session. Good thing too because I did not feel bad turning it off and catching up on my sleep.

I think Nadal and Djoko hit harder but more loopy so it has more margins for error and this is also why it was a slugfest. Though Monfils and Simon play at a slow pace they keep the ball close to net and lines. It's just a slugfest in both cases but I woudl say done more elegantly today.

Totally agree. Tomic has really improved his game, though he may still find it difficult to beat the top rankers, but he looks in the right direction. I often remember what T said about how amazingly some youngsters improve. He really played a very good match today. Fed's BP conversion looks poor, but I tell you every single one of those was very well saved by Tomic and not Fed missing those. He looks confident in his play. But he needs to work on his shot selection at times.
As GP said, it won't be long before he starts beating the 'roadrunners'. I have no doubt about it.

Yes many of those BPs Tomic saved were gutsy and that is also helped by the fact he had nothing to lose. I still think that this second set should have been more of a 6/0 than 76 and that 3rd set proves it again....but that more thanks to a great display of Federer than Tomic playing poorly.

Yeah I suppose easier to improve quickly at a young age. Maybe he is 20 year old after allraiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:I often remember what T said about how amazingly some youngsters improve.

Re: Australian Open 2013: Matches of the day : Day 6 19-Jan-2013
I did 't notice any improvement, maybe honed the forehand a bit and started using it more at the expense of that BH slice he was almost abusing this time last year.
Or maybe I've been so swept off my feet by Berankis' exciting tennis, everyone else looks dull and slow.
JJ's two matches were good, too.
Tomic is old news as far as I'm concerned; he's spent his "young gun" credit last year. Time to start delivering.
BTW, what is the points situation like....
Anyone going to calculate them

Not much happening there tbh since most guys have been progressing - Delpo the only really big casualty so far.
It would all get much more exciting if Stan took out Nole tonight. Let's all hope for that, all right?

Thats how the rule for this game is SB. I'm sorry it might look harsh but its only fair. At times making a prediction puts negative points to your total. See example for today : Tenez and luvsportz lost points by making a prediction. Some days the matches are more difficult to predict. Those days people would rather sit back and take a 0 instead of a possible negative. So how can I give advantage to someone who didn't even play for the day? That's where I don't want people to just sit back play safe by avoiding a day's picking. You'll know as you go on..
