Australian Open 2013: Matches of the day : Day 3 16-Jan-2013
Tomorrow the 2nd round starts for the top half. This half doesn't look very interesting as yet but lets see if we get some interesting matches as the tournament progresses.
1. Feliciano Lopez (ESP)
v
Radek Stepanek (CZE) [31]
Not doing too good with the predictions, I'll persist. Stepanek in 5
2. Guillaume Rufin (FRA)
v
Tomas Berdych (CZE) [5]
Berdych is losing to anyone these days. I'm think about an Upset. Rufin in 4
3. Venus Williams (USA) [25]
v
Alize Cornet (FRA)
My pick: Cornet
4. Nicolas Almagro (ESP) [10]
v
Daniel Gimeno-Traver (ESP)
My pick: Almagro
5. Xavier Malisse (BEL)
v
Fernando Verdasco (ESP) [22]
My pick: Verdasco
-----
Thats all. I couldn't pick the 6th match as this half looks very dull at the moment.

1. Lopez. If comments are true the courts are playing faster.
2. Berdych. If it had been Clay or Grass I might have plumped for the upset.
3. Williams.
4. Maggy. I am hoping he goes deeper.
5. Malisse. I like a bit of Xavier and the slightest breeze tends to un-settle Nando.

Not sure I would back Harrison over Djokovic given how poor he was when they met at Wimbers last year.

Well it would really be an upset, I agree...but probably Nole's toughest round till the 1/4.

Priceless entertainment in the first set tie-break.
JJ 1:5 down takes the sunglasses off and puts the cap back on, turns it around. At 9:0 serving for the set, puts the glasses on and has a fit when the lines person fails to call an out.
he than has a full on Mec display of loud, throaty HOW MANY TIIIIIMES? to the umpire, falls on his knees theatrics, earns himself a warning.
10 all at the moment, btw

Davverman wins the first set 12:10 in tie-break, JJ livid with the chair umpire!
You should have kept the hat on and sunnies off JJ!

I wonder if Jerzy can turn it around. Kei looks like he will be through rather easily.

Camera pans over the entire AO complex....in some way they all look similar...there is something about milling around the courts, such happy times for a tennis fan!

And JJ breaks with an absolutely spectacular point, 2:0, on the serve in the 4th.
This fan is calling it a night , JJ, don't you dare put back those sunglasses on keep the dream alive!!!

Jerzy and Somdev were just starting the third set when I started watching. From then on it was an exhibition by Jerzy, I could not fathom how he lost the first two sets. It all lasted until he was serving for the match at 5:3. He was almost there. And now back on serve.

MTO for Jerzy. My guess would be it is a tactical one. Not too impressed.
Somdev needs to do something about his serve. Way too slow, Jerzy is teeing off on it no problem.

Re: Australian Open 2013: Matches of the day : Day 3 16-Jan-2013
In the end, Jerzy comes through 7:5. But I got a glimpse of how he could have lost those two sets. There was a stretch where he was making too many unforced errors. He is playing Almagro in the next round; that will be a better test of whether or not he is for real.
BTW, I do not think he is hitting as many droppers here as I remember him hitting in Paris. Nicer game than Milos overall I would say.

He reminds me a kind of Safin....but I very much doubt he will achieve as much.

Somdev had plenty of tactical moments himself, he took a really long bathroom break after he won the 2nd set and tried to put pressure on linesmen from the word go which he succeeded in.

He lost the first two sets because of very strong sun. He made a lot of errors on his serve, double faults, the lot. He was a better player during the entire match (well up to 3:0 in the 4th when I stopped watching, at least), to give you an idea, this is how he lost the first set, he was robbed by the linesman (btw, already making it into an instant Youtube classic):
