Re: Aus Open 2021 Thread
Thanks Tsi....getting rid of Nadal is always hard work.
Yes nadal was exhausted.
Regarding NadaL saving this forum...we can say saving tennis for now. It will need toime for the youngsters to build a rivalry which will be as intense as Borg McEnroe or Nadal/Federer.
I think they can. But at my age, one will have to have tremendous talent for me to get as hooked as I have been with Fed. ....or maybe one need as obvious a cheat as Nadal is/was.

Re: Aus Open 2021 Thread
Tsi: "After that match, a despondent Tsitsipas talked about how Nadal had a unique "talent" of making his opponents "play bad"."
And that is so true. Nadal's powerful and spinny ball makes it very difficult to time. But as Nadal tires, the spin and length on the court drops and he becomes easier to play.
Djokovic is the best at putting the bull through the picador early on, breaking his neck muscles so that to the bullfighters can work the beast out.
Tsi could not do much for a couple of sets....but then nadal's strength became his weakness. His fitness went and he does not have the talent to make it up!

Commiserations naxroy, I won’t pretend I’m not pleased to see Tsitsipas win but it won’t be right unless he or Medvedev win this.
A change of guard is long, long overdue. I’d settle for Fed packing in if it meant we could see new rivalries, new ascendancies.

This Russian is very impressive considering we had to wait his 26th year to find out about a very solid talent.
Very heavy shots and physically hurt his opponents by asking to run with more pace.

And though I just jinxed him...I still fancy his chances. He has the game and has to find his range.

well...won't do it this time. Lacked a bit of consistency probably due to Djokovic asking for more pace and thin margins. But very interesting player.

Who do you fancy has the best chance to beat Djokovic?
My heart says Tsitsipas, head says Medvedev.

yep....I agree. I don;t think Tsi is ready yet whereas Medv can exploit any physical weakness Djoko may have.

good stats from the sport paper l'Equipe.
" Of all the 25 players who beat nadal in a GS up to the semi final did not go on to win the slam!!!!"
This says how physical are his matches I guess.

This is where I disagree. The key is like Nadal...make him run. Where I have doubt though is that Medv stands a bit too far back....though he compensates by hitting flatter than Djoko and makes up for pace.

Medvedev has the attitude too. Indeed, so does Tsitsipas. They are so different from the awful Dimitrov generation if chokers.
Medvedev also has Djokovic’s volleys.

LOL...I never minded Serena bullying side. I know she has it but I am more forgiving with this type of bullying than those who pretend to be victims every time a la Konta.

I think Medvedev will win tomorrow. Medvedev is playing as well as he has ever had, and Djokovic is not quite as good as he used to be. Maybe Medvedev can take over #1 spot later this year too.

She did pretend to be a victim, in USO 2018 final she said the umpire only gave her code violation because she was a woman and mother; before the USTA threw him under the bus.Tenez wrote: I am more forgiving with this type of bullying than those who pretend to be victims every time a la Konta.

I agree. He looks the heir apparent. I think he’s substantially better than his peers and would have been a tough match even for peak Novak. Med is fantastic, but like your favourite Murray, does have a tendency to lose his temper on court. USO 2020 SF he lost his temper and lost to Thiem in straights; earlier this tournament he got taken to 5 sets because he mentally lost it for a couple of sets.
If Medvedev does keep his cool it will be a very close match. However Djokovic is serving better than ever, record aces this tournament, and I have a feeling in the key points he will serve huge and edge the match. Nole in 4.

What I do know is that if Medvedev gets on top Djokovic will start grimacing between points and calling for attention to his “abdominal tear”.
Abd bullying I referred to in Serena Williams was the type where she was bawling death threats into the face of a small line judge.

I don't think Medv is going to be the dominant player in the future. I do fancy his chances for tomorrow but his game is just a better version of Djokovic, while the new gen have in general more aggressive games with more potential. Sinner is the one I really find impressive. Shapo would be my favourite but he is too weak mentally. And I still think Rub will become a better player than Medv.

Glad to be back Tenez, yeah been a bad year for tennis.
Second set to Daniil it seems, Djoko squeaking louder, so either tired or preparing the crowd for a fake MTO soon.

Djokovic just been too good so far. His returning and baseline game has been unreal. Much as I think Medvedev is the best of this generation, the gap to Djokovic still looks a chasm. So easy to underrate just how talented he is because his game is so efficient.

Federer’s weeks at number 1 record definitely gone now. He’s going to somehow need to win more slams if he has any shot at being rated higher than Nadal and Djokovic in the GOAT stakes.

Djokovic will get to 25 majors or so quite comfortably. He's moving better than ever while Nadal and Federer have declined. Next gen are bottle jobs.

I don;t think the gap between Djokovic and Medv or most other youngster is huge. What made the difference today was again experience. And this is what makes Nadal and Djokovic better than the rest...even if the younger gen has more weapons.
It was very obvious Medv played below his par. He has beaten Djokovic in the past but there again in a final, he cracked.
I don't think Djokovic will get to 20. It can only get tougher from now.

Even Grade 1 muscle tears normally take 2-3 weeks of rest to heal, and the tear tends to get exacerbated with physical activity.

25 not sure. But 21-22 seems highly likely. He will set most of the records to his name. He is the youngest and has benefitted most from the absence of any major younger rival.. Its 10 years since his domination started in 2011 AO, And still, his biggest rivals are Grandpa Fed and Nadal.
Zverev should have dispatched him. He didn't. Med should have dispatched him, he didn't. He keeps collecting slams as much as he wants. Without having to play anything special.
Statistically, he will end with GOAT title.
No. of Slams : Checked.
No of weeks at #1: Checked.
Better h2h against all his rivals: checked
Most ATP1000 : Checked.
... fill in the blanks: Checked.

He is likely to get to 22, let alone 20. Fed's weeks at #1 is sure to be gone to him. The next gen are useless sh!theads. Djoko was ready to be dispatched in QF. But Zverev only wanted to have a good match.Tenez wrote:I don;t think the gap between Djokovic and Medv or most other youngster is huge. What made the difference today was again experience. Med seems to say he was not happy with his game in the final and I agree. He served and played well below his level prior to the final and I think that is due to nerves.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:https://www.atptour.com/en/news/medvedev-reaction-australian-open-2021-final

Not much else to say.
As you know I will never put Djoko and Nadal in the same basket as Federer. Not the same level of talent. Medv and many other will become better than Djokovic and Nadal, cause they will learn to become as physical hence as consistent. They will bot be able to learn to time the ball like Federer.

I remember when Daniel was saying that Djokovic could never get to 20 slams...cause he was too old I believe. Without hitting that ballgirl he would be at #19 already. Anyway I am not saying he will get to 20 but he really can.
However, I think somehow he won't.
