Cool...the draw will be exciting.
I know the FO sponsored by Babolat has really helped Nadal with the draws in the past.
I am not sure it will help him this year. I can see a Djoko Nadal semi.
Nadal will want to avoid :
Karatsev
Rublev
Tsi
Shapo
Medvedev (not good on clay but might find Nadal's shots easy to attack plus he can run).

Very good. Shame Nadal and Roger are not in the same quarter. A good chance for Tsi!

I forgot the French was on but just tuned in and see that Thiem is imploding.
God, the tennis is garbage. I am reminded of why I am dropping out of this sport as Federer finally comes to the end. Fundamentally tennis is great to play and rubbish to watch unless there someone thinking up shots you wouldn’t imagine.

LOL....nadal runs after the ball...so there is minimum "thinking" involved. And teh FO is teh best surface to run after balls....hence why Nadal has so many wins there.

I was poised to side against Tenez but after the first two I’m afraid they are not what I would watch for, incredible though they are.
I’m thinking, just as a silly example, if this sort of stuff.

Does Thiem think that now that he has one slam he has accomplished it all and can cruise into retirement?

Re: Roland Garros 2021
The first one was a reflex volley followed by a hotdog lob! Although for some weird reason the video I linked only showed a side view of the hotdog with some odd editing.bogbrush wrote:I was poised to side against Tenez but after the first two I’m afraid they are not what I would watch for, incredible though they are.
This is a normal vid of that point:
If Federer hit that, you would definitely appreciate it. Maybe just player bias if not?
This is brilliant. The drop shot return of serves are brutal genius.bogbrush wrote:

I don’t know but honestly the genius preceded the bias so I think it’s fair.
On another subject, Osaka. Do the media or F off. Mental Health FFS!

Thiem is not on form...but even when he was he never had the nerves to win anything. Just lucky that the slam he won was against an even more gutless player.naxroy wrote:the best clay courter ever indeed.

We both know you'd be waxing lyrical if Federer hit that hotdog. Regardless, it's true the Swiss is a once in a generation genius.bogbrush wrote:I don’t know but honestly the genius preceded the bias so I think it’s fair.
This got on my nerves. Mental health is a very serious issue; but there's no correlation between that and some questions from journalists after a defeat. Makes a mockery of genuine issues.bogbrush wrote:

Shows how her ego got blown out! Having to explain a loss in front of journalists is obviously a pain for her. She should read Kipling's poem at Wimby's gate!

Only softball questions allowed? Why?
I always thought Andy Roddick had a good way if he was really hacked off, but they take the money that ultimately comes from the public so doing the public communication thing is part of the professional job.

Post-match interviews are probably unavoidable - part and parcel of promoting tennis. But if Osaka does not like it, nothing wrong with her trying to fight it - though she will most likely lose the fight, obviously.bogbrush wrote:On another subject, Osaka. Do the media or F off.

I see the snowflake has melted. Good job RG for holding the line, though regrettably I now expect players taking the knee for her, wearing tribute tee-shirts, and so on until she gets her way. I mean she already ticks too many boxes not to. All she needs is a girlfriend, or even better to declare gender neutrality and they’ll probably have to award her the trophy to make amends.

if all players stayed united, they would win all fights
and this applies to any colective

Re: Roland Garros 2021
Sure, but what they win is another matter. Without the Slams they would be paid a fraction, it is these iconic events that create the value. Players come and go, the great tournaments go on.

Re: Roland Garros 2021
I perceive the "fight" to be that players should not be required to do the pressers - or at least they should have some leeway. I do not think that fight is very winnable because pressers ultimately bring money, so not many people - players included - will be keen to join in.naxroy wrote:if all players stayed united, they would win all fights

But I do have some sympathy for her in that I do not hold journalists in general in very high regard - I kind of think most are "lying scum" so to speak - and many of their questions at these press conferences are quite silly.
My take on it is that press conferences are a necessary evil. If there was a way to up their quality somehow, I would be all for it, just do not see how.

Re: Roland Garros 2021
So her racking in $40M from sponsors last year gives her the right to refuse to talk after the match?
Good that she quit RG, think she needs a new BF to manhandle her properly and fix her, guess that dumb toy boy is no good penetrating her mind.
I like her game compared to most ping pong girl tennis we see, but she seems to have given herself some non court political, racial etc roles that are overloading her too much, hit the ball and stfu.
On the other hand, Fed was superb today?? Totally different play from Geneva.

She appears like a good advert for teaching kids to suck stuff up and not try to be so delicate. A nice girl, messed up.
Fed enjoyed himself against a guy who had nothing to threaten him with. The only thing he wants avoid is grind. Better get out before the quarters!

Never heard of Musetti before. It turns out he plays with a SHBH. Watching highlights of Musetti vs Tsitsipas from Lyon. Quite entertaining.

The organisers are not very smart to start a night session at 9pm...especially with still a curfew from 9pm.
Looks like Federer will pull out now.

It’s be the smart move to pull out now; 3 matches played & won and an unwinnable 4th round match, so get home and prepare for grass.

Confirmed. I’m relieved.
Hell, he might well sign off RG with a win! I suspect he’ll be back for a full crowd send off next year though.

Fed may chuck it in after the US, given he’ll have passed 40 by then. Much may depend on his showing at Wimbledon.

Good that he quit, save it for Halle and W.
Guessing Basel this year will be his last play and quit at his birthplace? Unless he goes to top 8 and gets into year end Masters.

He played 2 good sets today too and totally bankrupted physically from 3rd set till he quit on 5th.
Maybe Sinner today can do some damage.
Schwartzman keeps rolling.

Looking forward to seeing Tsitsipas Medvedev tomorrow.
Tenez always had Medvedev as a good bet for RG and despite his awful record till this edition, the russian has finally come up to the expectations.
He always had the game to perform on clay, but for some extrange reason, he hadnt so far.

I just found out that Medvedev can reach #1 ranking at RG. And he apparently might not even need to win the title. He could be a slamless #1.

Can Djokovic recover from 5 setters nowadays? Luckily for him, and me, there were 3 easy sets amongst those 5.
Another proof that the youngsters are not nearly as fit (essentially stamina) as the 30+yos. New technology has fooled us in believing 26 was the peak age in tennis....and it is still fooling many actually.

If Djokovic wins FO, as is very likely, he is going to go on to win Calendar Year Grand Slam.
GOAT race between Federer and Djokovic will sadly be over by end of 2021.

Nadal is old now and very very slow. Lateral movement worse than 40 year old Federer's. Serve also a mess, he keeps hitting double faults.bogbrush wrote:Nadal is going to crush Djokovic. I don’t think it will even be close.
