A surprise, but also explicable in the context of the women’s game. Williams was 21-4 in slam finals after W 2015 and goes to 23-10. The marginal contributions to her dominance are all blunted, her age is catching up with her, youngsters are no longer awed, and she gets ‘tight’ in the one type of match she could always be relied upon to play her best in. Still impressive she makes so many finals, but she’s meeting opponents who believe they can seize their chances.

One day it will happen to the big three in the men’s game.

If Rafa is to win, I hope it's quick.  The last thing I want is Rafa to win in 5th set TB after Medvedev squanders two MPs at 40-15 late in the fifth.

In fact, I would prefer this match to be quick regardless.  Medvedev winning after 5+ hr battle would be ok but I would not get much extra joy out of it compared to a quick 3-set win.

Hopefully this one is done in 2-2.5 hrs at most.

Medv will need to keep close to the line if he wants to stand a chance. Standing way back as he does won't work against Nadal.

Rafa gets time violation in his first service game

3rd game in and Nadal is dripping with sweat. Like he's come to court straight from the sauna after a curry!

Rafa looks nervous. He already hit a number of shots/serves in the middle of the net.

It was so important that the referee sent a time warning on Nadal's first service game. It made him sweat like a pig in that second service game.

Just like in the SF vs Berrettini, Rafa does not look himself to me.  Let's see if he wakes up now.
