Re: ATP 1000 : Monte Carlo 2019
Some players should never retire. Fognini is one of them.

Fabio's BH slice is divine.
So is that flat topspin one.

Yeah and the guy that gave him a lesson is less than a year younger!Daniel2 wrote:Might have escaped your attention Eman but Nadal is already incapable of chasing down every ball - hence why the losses are piling up. But there will come a day when he's left totally naked and will be forced to retire.

This is very watchable. I was worried what version of Fognini would show up but so far at least he is playing well. And Lajovic is playing ok too, and his game is ok to watch also.

Well done, congrats Fabio. He will advance to #12 - his highest ranking ever.
This was a very pleasant Monte Carlo tournament for a change. Beautiful location, perfect start to the spring clay court season, and for once a happy result too.

You forgot the most important thing: delectable, flairful tennis and a victory with 10/10 panache!
Doesn't get better than that....I can just imagine how much he enjoyed himself....

You say that because you are a girl. In any event, the most important thing is that Christ is risen.noleisthebest wrote:You forgot the most important thing: delectable, flairful tennis and a victory with 10/10 panache!

Fognini should have achieved WAYYYYYy more on clay than he has, just unfortunate to have a juniors level serve, Regretfully I see him getting beat by someone like Ramos Vinolas at the French !!

Yeah, sadly that is quite likely.AceofDeath wrote:Fognini should have achieved WAYYYYYy more on clay than he has, just unfortunate to have a juniors level serve, Regretfully I see him getting beat by someone like Ramos Vinolas at the French !!
I cannot think of many current players who underperform relative to their abilities as much as Fognini does. Kyrgios perhaps, and that is about it. Even with the serve he has Fabio has all the tools to do far better - especially on clay.
Shame really, because his game not only has potential to be much better, but it is also eminently watchable.

Nadal's usual game-plan is to stay in the high-level rallies till the opponents get enough of it and try for a make-or-break shot. So unless someone he is painting the lines all throughout the match, Nadal wins.
Also he has started to stay back further 5m, you can barely see him on the camera screen when receiving. And he does this against almost everyone, not monsters servers.
Staying so far back cuts down his shot accuracy to a great deal.
To me that shows how the tour evolves. nadal could win all those clay courts standing 5m behind the baseline on clay....until Djoko took real advantage and showed us how to beat Nadal on clay (Soderling did show it too...but on an exceptional good day). Nowadays more people can handle his spin.
Having said that Nadal may have not fully recovered from IW and it is difficult to read much from this match I have not watched.
I believe that too is partly due to him staying further 5m behind the BL that he did most of his career. Those spinning balls considerably lose their spin & energy the longer they have to stay in the air. The stats showing RPS only show how the ball was struck. Wish there were stats showing how the rotations are when the ball is struck by the opponent's racquet.
