Lendl looking as indifferent as usual. The man must be such a truth-teller, I can’t imagine him ever putting sugar on it.

I only saw the last few games and Djoko certainly looked knackered. Maybe he is getting to that age where lining up matches get difficult. He was certainly playing much worse than yesterday but I think the main reason is the long rallies he has endured.bogbrush wrote:Djokovic looks exhausted, he’s now serving promptly as if he’s lost heart.
When one think about it, Djoko is good at extending rallies but when one makes him run fast and a lot he falters quickly. Stan and Nishi have at times shown the way...and now Zverev.

Djoko done 6 winners and 1 ace tonight.
Last night against Cilic was an easy warmup so he can't be tired from last night, Zverev tonight nowhere near Kachanov level of play, yet Djoko folded badly again in a Final.

I agree with that. I do not believe however that such a tall player can win that many slams with that kind of game. Guys like Kasha, Tsipa, Chung (if he gets back) will wear him down.Henman: It was Zverev's resilience and determination that finally wore Djokovic down today, which is very unusual.

I think there was a few long exhauting rallies which killed Djoko and from there never recovered his breath. Maybe his elbow was hurting but to me he made Zverev look better than he is.Jahu wrote:Djoko done 6 winners and 1 ace tonight.

And how does Rotla compare Zverev to Nadal now?

Not in you to admit you were wrong, is it? :P
You're all over the place. First Djok can't be worn down. Now, he can. Suddenly.

I can when I am proven wrong. What about you? You are often wrong yet never admit it.Daniel wrote:Not in you to admit you were wrong, is it? :P
I did not say Djoko could not be worn down. Unlike you I was the one arguing that guys like Delpo and Zverev can't beat him SVing which clearly they didn't.You're all over the place. First Djok can't be worn down. Now, he can. Suddenly.
Zverev went (or was dragged) to the net 1 point in 10 roughly....and won a bit less than 9% of the points played at the net. Out of those 9 points won at the net, how many were Serve/volleyed? none? one? dunno I did not see the whole match but I am sure not many.
the 90% of points played which really mattered were won while serving or from the baseline. And they are those who damaged Djoko, not the net play.

You'd best go and look at how Zverev did what I said he would and won by clever net play. Because he did. No one mentioned serve and volley... until you did just now.

I have watched now the first 6 games....and Zverev only went twice to the net by his own intent. The rest he was forced to due to Djoko short balls.

Djokovic has said in his press conference today, and also after he lost to Kachanov in Paris, that he wasn't at 100% due to illness.

Its like comparing sun( Nadal) and the moon( Zverev ).Tenez wrote:And how does Rotla compare Zverev to Nadal now?
My point about him still holds. Alteast for now. I'm certain had he lost the 1st set, he would have folded into a trashed soda-can and lose the 2nd set very quickly just like all the times he has done. Fortunately for him Djoko faltered and Zverev won. The level of the game was mostly avg. Neither tried to even force an error but stay solid and not to make error themselves.
He was able to play his game with many advantages which a young Nadal didn't have. This WTF is not BO5. TMS and also WTF carry a lot of point for bo3 format. Last year even the lowly Dimi won the WTF and finished #3.
Zverev need to perform better at slams. Until then he is only accumulating points like many of the WTA players in the past who collected points to reach high ranking but failed at slams.

Re: WTF - London 2018 (and maybe a little bit of 'nextgen')
Nadal was young but fitter than anyone else back then. That is why he was that good for his age. Nothing new here.
And as fit as Nadal was he never won that ATP Final! Isn't that weird for someone who won 25 TMS1000 and 17 slams? Another proof that he wins most where his physical game works best: slow courts.
If like you say his mental mind made the difference, then the surface would be irrelevant. His record would be the same on fast as on sluggish courts.

Seems when Djokos game plan does not work, he has no answer to all balls coming back to him. While Kacha crushed the ball and had power, last night Zverev just did a Djoko and keep the ball in play middle of the court.
Djoko playing hard at start of the tournament, then no power for Final.
He will win maybe 1 GS and a couple of Masters next year, thats about it.

He certainly was below his form after mid first set. But he was playing very well in previous rounds.

What stops any of the next-gen to be young but fitter like Nadal in 2005? Its been almost 14 years.

What's weird here is your assertion of Nadal in the above statement. I'll just replace Nadal with Federer and see how weird was your above statement.
See now

And as talented as Federer was he never won that Rome, Monte Carlo TMS! Isn't that weird for someone who won 27 TMS1000 and 20 slams? Another proof that he wins most where his physical game works least: fast low bouncing courts.

Anyway, we will have this discussion about zverev and how good is he when the AO 2019 rolls down.
