Re: Roland Garros - 2019
Djok hasn't a prayer of beating Fed's GS title record - but Nadal's using this dirt to catch up. And it's a travesty he's able to win so many of these through piss easy draws and weak players. Can Thiem finally show there is an opponent other than Djok?
Really good luck for Nadal - not only with the draw but the fact he didn't have any rain delays.

The curse carries on for the top 3 players who have 53 maybe 54 slams between the 3 of them... Yet no one has won the 4 slams twice.... In spite of having won at least 15 slams each.

Yeah. They both can play better than this. Thiem was good in patches but too many lapses in concentration. Cannot do that tomorrow.bogbrush wrote:Not a very good standard but good to see Knobhead going home.
Hoping for a washout tomorrow and a Monday final (I know, not happening )

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
I was getting ready for tomorrow buying Serbian flags, memorizing Serbian patriotic songs (not that I understand any of them) and it will all have been for nothing.
Still, I do not mind. This is far better.
Dominator will dominate tomorrow. He just must break to win the title as he will not serve it out.

Thiem may be a choker but you have to give this to him: he has been working on his game, continuously improving, and coming back stronger the next year.
You cannot even give that much to most others in the 24-30 year crowd. If they somehow manage to make a deep slam run, or run one of the big 4 close, rest assured they will go straight back to the pack by next year.

Nole Was not in his best form.
Thiem is a great claycourter, but Rafa is the best claycourter ever.
If thiem wins tomorrrow, IT will Be absolutely amazing, historical. Because beating Nadal at RG is the hardest task in tennis.

Agree, after he quit Bresnik he seems much more controlled though still overpowers lots of shots, slice is much better, dropshots absouletly sweet, good cool head.
He needs a GS tomorrow, Rafa does not!!!

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
An additional positive thing that Thiem may get out of this (in addition to the win itself) is that he will not feel like he had to play his very best to just barely scrape by Nole. He knows he did not play that great, and won still. Knowing he may not have to play a perfect match to win may take some pressure off him in future.

Rafa is 33 though. He is still great but not quite where he used to be. I think Thiem may win but even if he does I will not pretend he is better than Rafa obviously.naxroy wrote:Thiem is a great claycourter, but Rafa is the best claycourter ever.

lol... no it isn't.
Reaching WN1 so many weeks and consecutively and making 8 title wins at Wimbledon is infinitely harder than beating one man. Soderling has done it ffs.

As a one-off though, surely you would agree with that?
92 wins, 2 losses at the FO.

A one off match - but that's not what naxroy said. "Hardest task in tennis" - it is not.
Also, Nadal has had no clay court specialist to deal with in his entire career.

He was referring to a one off event, otherwise one could just argue beating Nadal twice at the French Open is harder than beating him once.

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
Nadal's movement is nowhere nearly as good as when he was younger, his hope is to dictate the rallies. He did this well against Federer, hitting 34 winners, 9 more than Fed, in 3 sets. However Thiem hits the ball very hard so Nadal will be on the back foot.
They last played in Barcelona a month ago and Thiem won fairly comfortably in straight sets, Nadal is gong to have to come up with a new strategy to prevent a repeat.

of course I was referring to a one off event
of course winning 20 slams is harder than beating one single man in one match
winning a slam is really difficult, roland garros has its own special difficulty (which doesnt mean it is harder than others, it simply is different) winning a slam, beating number 1 and 15 time slam champion, in the semis, is very difficult. And if in the final, Nadal awaits and you still win... that is history of the sport
of course, as summerblues said, nadal is 33, so sooner than later he will lose, but he is in the final, so he still is the number 1 claycourter, he is defending champion and he has won 11 times.
If thiem wins tomorrow, he will enter the books of history
because he would have beaten two monsters of the sport, and the absolut king of clay to raise the cup
my money though, will be on nadal

of course if thiem wins, that will mean that he was better in the match (he also beat rafa in barcelona) but no way it means that thiem is better claycourter than nadal
he should dominate in a way that he doesnt even have time for, being 25 and seeing what nadal has achieved, and what he had already achieved at 25. Thiem can write his own history, but he is not the name that will take nadal out of his own clay throne

Yep I concur.
I now believe he has the tools to win a slam. Speed, endurance and great depth of shot off of both wings. He has weapons too. The missing part of the jigsaw is the champions mentality - he is yet to prove that he has that

Whilst a great result for Thiem, an even better one for Nadal. Thiem taken to the limit and Djokovic falling by the wayside.
On a side note, what an absolute embarrassing shit show this tournament has been. From the chaos of last Sunday shafting Nishi and Paire, to Serena Williams pushing Thiem out, to the mad scheduling yesterday to calling time on the day's play despite the dry weather.
Utter shit show.

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
The real reason for the shit show is that they have done nothing to speed the conds and allow the 3 most boring lung busters to get to the business end of the tournament. And this has been going for years.
Wimbledon was also a bore when TBs between big servers decided all matches. There at least they changed the balls to allow more rallies. Unfortunately to another extreme....but at least they tried.
While Nadal on clay has nothing to do but camp 5m behind the baseline and wait for errors. ....and he managed to win 12 GS there....He himself has turned that tournament into a shit show for the large part of the last 15 years!

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
I'm not sure which matches you're watching. It's a total mischaracterisation of Nadal's game-style, which is to dictate rallies and attack from the baseline.Tenez wrote:

Nadal since 2015 doesn't even have the speed to pull off the gamestyle of sitting back in rallies and purely defending.
Every single match Nadal has played since 2017 at RG, he has hit more winners than his opponent, including his most recent match against Federer.

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
Tactics for this afternoon:
Nadal will try to kill the match in the first set by inflicting long gruelling rallies as usual. If the match drags on, he might not be able to sustain so it is essential for him to play a tired Thiem...and possibly exhausting him further.
For Thiem, it's quite easy tactically too. Problem is can he extend rallies like Djoko does ? Cause believe it or not Nadal will tire first. The spaniard is a bluffer and will try to show he has much more in the tank than Thiem. However his style is even more gruelling than the Austrian so as long as Thiem can endure the rallies, he has a very good chance. But can he? The answer to that question will affect the result of the match.

The epic that was Wawrinka/Tsitsipas was clearly going to over-run. Paire/Nishikori was due to follow that match. Now that match could've been moved to Simmone Mathieu court and one of the doubles matches there moved to the outer courts. The organisers despite the Wawrinka/Tsitsipas going on past 6pm Paris time and followed by the fact it was going into a 5th then meant that by the time that match finished, Nishikori and Paire had absolutely zero chance finishing on time. Was only one match that they had the option to finish on time by moving and they bottled it.
Which is why hence you had the chaos of Friday when Konta's match was moved. I still would've preferred one of the mens semis moved to Lenglen and have them start at the same time or roughly the same time so that they can complete the day's play. Absolutely shocking.

They had met three times at RG. Thiem did not do better than 4:6 in any of the sets. It will be hard. Still, I think he has a fighting chance.

Irrespective of the result, this is a fitting final. Thiem has arguably been the second best clay courter the last two-three years.

Thiem can’t keep up this level of running. He’s got to find a way to get on top in the points. At the moment, Nadal
is dictating far too many points.
