Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
Let's not forget Roland Garros is now water under the bridge, and grass court season is upon us. This week we have Stuttgart and s-Hertogenbosch. Projected QF line-ups are:
Stuttgart:
Zverev - FAA
Basilashvili - Raonic
Shapovalov - Medvedev
Monfils - Khachanov
s-Hertogenbosch:
Tsitsipas - Gasquet
De Minaur - Tiafoe
Goffin - Verdasco
Garin - Coric
Stuttgart:
Zverev - FAA
Basilashvili - Raonic
Shapovalov - Medvedev
Monfils - Khachanov
s-Hertogenbosch:
Tsitsipas - Gasquet
De Minaur - Tiafoe
Goffin - Verdasco
Garin - Coric

Shapovalov promptly lost to Struff. He seems to be headed in the wrong direction this year - unlike Struff who is playing probably best tennis of his life.
Basilashvili and Medvedev are also out of Stuttgart, but I did not have the same kind of expectations for them. What is happening to Madvedev? Injury maybe? He looked quite good the first part of the clay court season but has disappeared since then.

Shapo not good on clay, not good on grass, only on HC it seems he has potential for now.
Raonic seems to be back on grass nicely, beat Tsonga in a good tight match.

Zverev and Tsitsipas promptly lost their opening matches too. Tsitsipas lost his match to the clay court specialist nobody Nicolas Jarry.
I hope these are tactical losses to conserve energy for the bigger tournaments to come, rather than signs of inconsistency or ineptitude.

Raonic is another lost cause though. Tsonga is 34 years old, ranked #79, and on his way out. May have been a good one-off match, but Raonic is going nowhere methinks.Jahu wrote:Shapo not good on clay, not good on grass, only on HC it seems he has potential for now.

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
I'd love to see him play Federer; just watching how Federer would react to his hugely idiosyncratic style would be a joy. I think he'd love it but it would give him something novel to look at. Maybe he'd try to compete in the crazy stakes, that really would be something to see!naxroy wrote:This Dustin brown guy... Where is he the rest of the year?
Rafa maybe would say he's had his fill of Dustin on grass!

Dustin on the verge of beating Felix too, he is one weird galactic madafaka, what a guy. Sure 3 good matches a year, and this Tournament was his first this year and beats Zverev on his second match.

the best part of the season is when Dustin Brown complains about wimbledon being slow.

We ask the same about Nadal off clay.

Fed barely beats Tsonga, little luck and the serve in 3rd saved it.
Looking scruffy.

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
This Felix is scary. He makes Tsi look bad. Tsi is certainly not as comfy on grass than clay. he needs that extra split second to get safer shots. That is why I always sais that his real strength is his covering of the court ...and mind.
Felix can return very well for his young age.

Tsi hiding behind a little MTO, but Felix beating the shit out of him.
Good to see Zverev lose, yesterday after he won, he knelt on the grass for a minute praying head down and talking to someone up there, so in general I guess praying//God does not help much in Tennis

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
Goes back to what I have always said. FAA is way more talented than Tsi and for his young age, he is quite professional (also, Tsi is overrated and I'll maintain saying that until he improves a few more things and proves me wrong...). Let's not forget he had to win 2 matches yesterday against Dimi and Kyrgios, not necessarily the best players, but quite good grass court players... He could be the first teenager in a long long time to win a slam, as he is still only 18.

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
Also, let's not forget that FAA skipped the grass season last year and only registered his first win on grass this year and went all the way to the Final in Stuttgart already. Surely winning Queen's would be something...

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
I am not a fan of Felix's game. But he certainly has a bit more talent than the current top road runners. Unfortunately he has similar games and it is no luck that he s partnering with Hewitt who will teach him how to be super fit.
Felix is physically very fit for his age if you compare him with Rublev or Shapo for instance. He certainly has not got the body of a 18yo.

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
Tenez, I know you are waiting for a Fed level talent youngster, but I assure you that it will not happen in your lifetime, but if anything close to it comes by one day, I will make sure you get the message on the other side
Yes, Felix brings nothing special to tennis for now, but at least seems more able and serious then the 20-24y crop of players, also seems fine on all surfaces and not a one surface specialist. With good coaching in next 2-3y he can do a serious pool of GS in long term.

LOL....It won't be like Federer but it will be as good just slghtly different. Many thought that no player would be as talented as Mc back then who was labelled the Mozart of tennis....yet many more talented players came after mc.
Like Beethoven and Shubert came right after Mozart.
I must say Fed is exceptional in that regard but he and others have built the base to reach higher levels like all players before him. This is why it is ridiculous to think that the younger generation won't reach higher level.

Not the highest quality tennis, but Fed takes first set easily. Herbert was very poor at the beginning of the set and went a break down meekly.

Wow. Felix looking far stronger than I expected. I did not imagine his game would translate to grass so well. Also, did not quite appreciate before how big he can serve.
Very impressive.

Felix losing the plot a little in this set. Now he looks more like what I had expected - a baseliner learning how to play on grass.

Re: Grass Court season - Wimbledon tune-ups
Fed's match started out poor but improved later and, especially Fed, it was quite good towards the end.
This is kind of opposite. Strated out quite good but has deteriorated since. Lopez has been playing at consistent level throughout, but FAA looked far better in the first set.

I stated it a few posts up, no one cares or has ever cared for him, a Pro since 1997 so 22 years and has 2 x ATP500 and 4 x ATP250 which is a joke.
