Dimitrov
The guy looks like Federer, same haircut, type of skin, same eye color, same clothes, same sponsor, same racket. The sweatband? Of course only one: on his right arm. I bet he plays with the same strings and string tension too. He moves the same between the points, acts the same, has the same rhythm, same service motion, same pre service routine and has the same grip. What about his shots? SHBH, what else? Same BH technique, the squash shot, FH dropshot: it’s all there. And what’s his habit waiting for the serve? Yes: twisting his racket, like you know who.
Holy cow: he’s imitating Federer! Surely there’s nothing wrong with a player who reminds me much of the greatest of all time but i’m worried for Grigor. I seems like he focuses too much on his idol (well, i assume it is his idol, who can argue with that?). Who is he, what’s his identity? We don’t know, he’s baby Federer.
I like Grigor but I’m worried that he’ll always remain baby Federer because in each and every department of the game he’s not as good as Federer senior. If he wants to reach to the very top he’ll need to improve almost every part of his game. Or get himself a monstrous fitness. But that will never happen, because he’s baby Federer

Re: Dimitrov
The only downside is that his FH is really weak. The BH looks like Federer, the BH slice looks like Federer. However he lacks the precision serve and the FH of the maestro.

Re: Dimitrov
If only he could play like him....as he is, he's like his shadow, definitely needs to fill out for the style he wants to play. He'll be better when that happens, reminds me of Nole when he was young & skinny.
He also lacks a bit of cockiness.
Copying Fed's looks was not a good idea. all fluff and not substance as I said of somebody else a long time ago....
Also, regarding the imitation, he's come a long way from these days :

Re: Dimitrov
He might be copying Federer but when woudl he have most likely tried to copy him at the earliest? 2004? As a 13yo? possible. He did well to copy him and then win WImbledon Juniors a few years later.
Copying is one thing but one needs the talent to keep pulling those SHBHs.
I see the main difference being the mouvement. Grigor has a strong upper body and thin legs which means his footwork is much heavier.
Federer's footwork, very similar to Borg is really what has allowed him to play that amazing tennis. Being pinpoint placed on every shot.

Re: Dimitrov
But to go back to GP's OP, I completely agree that Dimi needs to find his way. One cannot be successful by being the shadow or the replica of an idol, regardless how good is that idol.

Re: Dimitrov
And when younger, Federer was telling his coach...hey look I can hit a FH like Becker, then another day saying he could hit a FH like Pete but his coach kept on teaching him the classic way and develop his own variations.
I am sure Dimi is also trying to pull away from Roger or at least try to clear his head of the great champion but it might not be that easy. Fed is a "classic" player and that means he must be strongly influence on those who would have naturally been very similar to him even if they'd not known him.

Lundgren reckons he is a lot better then Federer was at the same age,but that was a few years back, there hasnt been that much improvement in the last 2 seasons
The gift is there, but he is very cocky and seems to have a bit of an attitude problem
The shot he made at Basel this week is definitely the shot of the season

There's no way he's better than Fed at any stage, he lacks guts to start with.

It is possible that Dimi plays better than Federer did at the same age and it is very likely that Dimi will reach a more efficient tennis than Federer did like Murray, Nadal and Djoko are also playing a tennis that is as efficient as Federer's.
The question is will Dimi be better than his peers like Federer is/was? Don't think so.

Dimi is 21.
He'll definitely get better once he gains upper body strenght, but in the meantime, he'd better start wearing a pony tail

I think he is very strong from the upper body. It's the legs that need strengthening.

I couldn't tell from his backhand...legs are pretty bad, no twinkletoes there...Tenez wrote:I think he is very strong from the upper body. It's the legs that need strengthening.

Re: Dimitrov
He played a terrible match. Serving for the first set and putting mid-court balls to be hammered away.
Last year another young 'un, Nishikori played much better at Basel, IIRC, than Dimitrov this year.
He seems to be unable to emulate Federer's calm demeanour despite the copying of other elements.
AO 2012 had some good matches from him.

Re: Dimitrov
I also think the legs/footwork is the problem. It's disappointing because 4 years ago (when he beat Berdych and gave Nadal a hard time in Rotterdam) this already was his main weakness. It's not like this is something he can't improve.

Lundgren was just trying to throw up some encouraging words for the young man. Or maybe he even saw him as a better player at that age. Its not necessary that if someone at a certain age is a better player, he will remain a better player even few years down the line. This is more true for young players.
