Re: Davis Cup 2016: FINAL
im hoping that an argentine win will have a similar impact on del potro in 2017 as the win for serbia did for djokovic

Anyone watching Davis Cup?
I made big Sunday lunch, ate big Sunday lunch, went and played for two hours...and all that time Cilic and Delpo have been playing...
They just started the 5th set.
Time to tune in!

Re: Davis Cup 2016: FINAL
And Delpo does it!
From two sets down amd a break down at the start of the 5th!
His FH kept delivering to the last point.
Atmosphere is totally mad. Imhabe never seen anything like it.
Maradona is in trance, jumping up and down like a little monkey, so funny.
Both sides yelling and cheering long first serves.
James Kaethevong did a good job to comtrol it...the few games I saw.
Now we go into the fifth rubber!
Don't know who is playing, but it's always cool when a number 2 gets a chance to become a national hero!

Re: Davis Cup 2016: FINAL
well done argentina!!
del potro must be so thrilled
talking about predictions earlier..del potro was the player to beat at the end of 09 but got injured which side lined him for several seasons
what would have happened if he didnt get injured?
world no1? how many more majors do you reckon?

Re: Davis Cup 2016: FINAL
I think Delpo has always needed better serve in order to win more "free" points and last longer in tournaments.
If fitness was not in vogue, he would have won more as he has great groundstrokes and smooth movement for a big player.
He's done well: olympic silver and bronze, one slam, Davis Cup...not bad considering 3 years of surgeries.
I like him much more than any other tall player as he does not allow his size to hinder him in any way.
And he does not spare the ball.... now that proper FH weapon is almost exctint, seeing him hammer his FH as hard as he can down the line is an awesome sight.

Excellent! Very pleased as they seriously deserved a DC or tow after so many finals.

Turned off watching when Cilic was 2-0 sets up and looking so strong. Then read news today morning that Argentina hae won DC. What a turnaround.Tenez wrote:Excellent! Very pleased as they seriously deserved a DC or tow after so many finals.
3rd time in 2016 Cilic has lost having 2-0 sets up. He has lost a lot of matches like this in his whole career. A lot also having 2-1 sets adv in slams. Goes to show how mentally fragile ha can be when the finish line is nearing.
Did Karlovic tank? I won't be surprised if he actually did. Losing all 3 sets and NO TBs? raises my doubts about how much he put into the match.
Congrats Argentina. I hope this win does good for the Argentine and South American tennis who have had great players in the past.

Why would Karlovic tank his chance to win the DC? I didn't watch it but I suspect he just suffered a little from nerves and DB apparently played really well.

Re: Davis Cup 2016: FINAL
I saw a few games on and off, the tennis was not that great.
Ivo did look a bit slow, or maybe the court speed was against him.
Delbonis was returning his serves well and was also passing Ivo with ease.
I suppose it was hard to fire ace after ace in that pandemonium amd that was what he needed to do, but couldn't.

Agreed but the comment above yours suggests he might have tanked!Tenez wrote:I meant choked.....I certainly don't think he tanked that one.

Re: Davis Cup 2016: FINAL
The court was very quick. Ivo served 35 aces against Potro and Cilic 34! Between them Potro therefore faced the equivalent of 17 games worth of aces!

He may. He has had rough relations with the Croatian Tennis Federations in past and for many years. He never did anything to make it better too.
He isn't exactly a team player.
So maybe he wasn't motivated enough. Or wanted to teach them a lesson with the taste of loss.
