Re: 2014 Davis Cup Final: France-Switzerland
Reminds me a lot of FO 2012 when I was saying that he was injured but some failed to see it. He was losing the first sets v Goffin, Mahut, Delpo but as the match went on his back was loosening up and managed to play better as the match went on.

I started saying it in FO 2012...when Federer who was sailing suddenly loses a set v a german guy ranked 100+ in the world. Fed had a bad back he picked on blue clay in Madrid's final v Berdych.noleisthebest wrote:I remember you talking about it during Wimbledon 2012.Tenez wrote:Reminds me a lot of FO 2012 when I was saying that he was injured but some failed to see it. Yes, I remember Madrid and blue clay, that was a costly title.
The other one was against Dodig, I think it was IW 2013.

Tsonga, The Crybaby?
Despite the presence of a record crowd of 27,432 spectators in the stands of the Pierre Mauroy stadium, Tsonga said after his 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to the fourth-ranked Swiss that the visiting fans were showing more support for their players.
''When the teams were introduced, they applauded Stan more than us, Roger (Federer) more than us,'' a dejected Tsonga said. ''We heard the Swiss spectators more than we heard the French ones.
'"Stan, for example, announced that the ball was out, and it was in. I just went to check the mark, and I was booed in my own country -- maybe not by the French spectators but by the Swiss spectators. It's annoying."
Stan:
"They didn't have the chance to do something for him.
I think it's maybe a little bit easy for him to say the crowd wasn't supporting him enough. I think it's just because on the court I was the better player and that's it."
OUCH!

Re: 2014 Davis Cup Final: France-Switzerland
Fed said the injury is like a "ghost" "always on the back of my mind be careful, be careful, boo" Nice to see he can somewhat joke about it but very telling. Just like last year, he can't play freely for fear he will hurt it further or aggravate it. At these margins, it's just not a way to win.
He offers to play doubles and singles if Luthi thinks it best for the team, but is it? The guy is a warrior, but can a diminished, tentative Fed pull off two victories after what happened today?
shame on those who said he pulled out of WTF to duck Djokovic..smh

his mouvement was not great but he still pulled good shots towards the end so in theory he could play a good double with Stan. Doubles are much less exhausting than single. It's crucial to win it as I doubt Stan will beat Monfils!truffin1 wrote:Fed said the injury is like a "ghost" "always on the back of my mind be careful, be careful, boo" Nice to see he can somewhat joke about it but very telling. Can Fed beat Tsonga playing like this though? Tsonga can turn on the power too and it's easier to swing away at Fed when you know his movement is half a step or a step behind

personally- im not sure stan and fed can beat the French in doubles either
shame Fed ran into his back issue again right at the end of the season. AS he half joked in one of the pressers, if stan had put him away in their match earlier, he might not be in this state!

Re: 2014 Davis Cup Final: France-Switzerland
Watching Stan I thought, what a mistake of the Frenchies to chose clay. He bullied Tsonga around the court and if he can keep it up, he should beat Monfils.
Monfils should have won even easier, considering the diminished state of his opponent. So sad to see. I don't know much about the rules of DC, but it seems they played Fed because they can't use him on sunday otherwise?
Anyway, maybe they figured that Injured!Fed has a better chance against Monfils than Lammer or Chiudinelli and they might not be wrong. But Tsonga will be too much for him I think.
What a tragical end to this season for Fed, with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. I don't mind French team winning, I like them, but that's not the way I'd have liked to see them win. Should have bet on France and Monfils as soon as Fed withdrew from WTF.

The French are the clear favs in the doubles for me, even if they face Fedrinka. Fedrinka haven't won much in DC recently and they lack practice together.
Haha, he jokes this way, thereby giving credit to Wawrinka, but I'm pretty sure he felt the injury before the Wawrinka match. It only aggravated during Tiebreak. Interesting to hear that it was so cold this year at WTF from NITB. Surely not the best way to treat an upcoming back injury then.

do you think they could go in cold without any practice together recently and beat the French though? Doubles will be easier on Fed but he still will be serving at less than 100%, still stiff and unable to bend properly at the net. If they don't win, now you have an even more beat up Fed that has to win on Sunday.
Swiss are in trouble.
I wonder if Federer will try for DC next year if they lose?. Seems like he and Stan would have a decent chance at the same run again.

I don't think Swiss will win the doubles, but considering doubles is less physically taxing than singles, Federer's contribution could be more for the doubles.truffin1 wrote:Kim Jong-Un wrote:I think Fed and Stan should play the doubles, it's a crucial tie.

Unless Federer's back improves, he's not going to beat Tsonga, and I see Stan beating Monfils; the doubles is crucial.

It pains me to say, but I agree with Kim here. I don't see muchh of a chance for Suisse whoever will play the dubs, unless Fed magically heals and we know he won't.

I must say I am really shared here. France has won 7 DCs and I know they will win more soon, while Federer won none...and it his last chance or so. Worse is that if Switzerland win it it will be essentially thanks to Stan and not Fed (who woudl have thought that).
So I am really watching without knowing who to support. Today for intance I was for fed v Monfils but was for Tsonga v Stan ....so the 2 matches went against my wish.

Re: 2014 Davis Cup Final: France-Switzerland
Tomorrow's doubles is the crucial match.
Fed-Stan is the only combination for the Swiss which go in as favourites regardless of Fed's injury.
The French can't play their best doubles man - Llodra, as he is injured waiting for surgery.
Benneteau&Vasselan played terrible on Saturday against the Bryans, Clemont can't be choosing them, despite the two winning RG this year.
We could easily see a Monf-Tsonga or Monf-Gasquet combo.
DC doubles are often the most interesting and exciting tie in DC matches, this one has the potential to be brilliant considering the quality of players.

Gasquet looking very good, his all-court talent really shines in doubles.
Benne should not have been chosen for this match, he has not been in great form. Can't return, zero confidence, even his movement is quite average for doubles dynamics.

I know doubles go theough both players' ups and downs, I hope Benne and he can hit the up together soon!
Fed and Stan mixing their chemistry great atm: Stan's baseline power and Fed's superb volleying (and everything else....)

Yes, this match won't have tired Fed, only boosted his confidence.
Tough one for Tsonga tomorrow.
I am assuming that's the first match on Sunday.
Not surprised by the score, also not sure France chose the best doubles team.
They were 2:1 against Serbia in Belgrade, (just like Switzerland are against France now) in 2010 and lost, so there is still hope!
Beauty of Davis Cup is you never know what's going to happen...

Fedrinka came to play today!! And both played fantastic! Fed's back seems to be warmed up and the movement needed for doubles is there!! Prob more mental than anything else, but knowing he had more court coverage seems to have eased his fears of going all out.
You guys were right! This was what the Swiss had to do and it paid off!
