You mean as nonsensical as declining at 27? Be serious for once.Julia Santamaria wrote:What?Tenez wrote:This is way too competitive a sport to have a chance to "decline".
This comment is so nonsensical it's beyond belief.
You picked the wrong horse from the beginning and that forced you to pick the wrong arguments too. About time you learn something about tennis.

Are you aware of the possibility that:
a) Others improve while someone can decline
b) Others can stay static when someone declines
Each way will lead to worse performances for the declining player.

Yes he does. About Fognini, I am not sure how serious socal ever was. He likes to go over the top even intentionally - often just to stoke the fire. It is possible that all he really meant was something like "having an extra couple of days off may also have its downside" but he wanted to get good mileage out of it on the forum, so he embellished it in his arguments.Tenez wrote:Does he still post on v2?

My secret dream is - in a couple of years, after Rafa, Nole, Andy generation either retired or declined - to watch Roger duking it out for the big titles with Grisha, Milos, Thiem, Vesely and co.

Exactly, righty Nadal would be a hardly average hard court player and Fed would make a tear-off calendar of him on that surface.

Re: Miami Thread
This win closed the gap in this rivalry to 22-18 in Nadal’s favor. Given how utterly Nadal has dominated the rest of the Grand Slam contenders, it was natural that a reporter asked him if, as a man who loves a challenge, he’s glad that Novak Djokovic "exists."
"No," Nadal immediately shot back, an elastic smile erasing the lines of stress on his brow. "I like challenges. . . but I am not stupid."
Djokovic was told of this exchange, and then the same question was put to him. He took the question more literally, because that’s his way. He sounded senatorial as he explained:
"Well, I'm going to answer differently. I think challenges, big challenges that I had in my career changed me in a positive way as a player. Because of Rafa, and because of Roger, I am what I am today."

I think this was the first time I saw Nole play Nadal with full focus from start to finish, it was great to watch!Tenez wrote:Well I expected a bit of drama.....and this final was a bit of a damp squib! Djoko was quite clinical and Nadal simply had no answer...no more than indoor WTF or Shanghai. Djoko had no let down and this is what happens when the opponent doesn't tire or lose concentration.
Could Nadal win no slam this year? I woudl not mind if it was to hear again those saying he is declining cause he does not win...Players lose cause others are getting better. It;s as simple as that. WHen Djoko loses it;s not because he woudl have declined....it's because the youngsters will push him out. This is way too competitive a sport to have a chance to "decline".
I also noticed, both in IW and especially in Miami, no pain and no anger relief in his immediate post match on court celebration. It was just happiness, light and pure...
I am so glad Nole seems to have healed those deep, old wounds, it was about time!
Will be interesting to see what Nadal does next...does he still have the desire to keep improving.
Not a lot of time left before the European season starts in full swing, can't wait!

I want to see a few Murray Nadal matches next...but maybe more on HC and grass than clay.
Those coming weeks are reeally going to be between Djoko and Nadal...unless some youngsters finally decide to make a difference. I think Rao can do well on clay.

I don' know about Rao...never been my cup of tea with that grotesque body/legs and no flair...all about brute force, plus that tongue...
I only warm up to him when he plays Murray.
Other than that he is just another Isner style wise...
Take away his serve and he crumbles...
Of the current youngsters Thiem looks the most exciting to watch, hope he gets a good coach.

Whatever the style, it's a different style, someone bringing new weapons on the table. If he can beat the best with his simple, brutal game, that's fine by me.

Re: Miami Thread
Do you know what I love most about Nadal losing? No, not the aggravation it gives some of his militant supporters- that's just a nice bonus. What I really like is that it puts Nadal and his uncle Moron in their place. Nadal is the kind of person who cannot lose graciously, it's all fake platitudes (until later when he blames injury or some other nonsense).
It makes me very happy knowing that he is at a complete loss against Djokovic. I know deep down it's killing the arrogant little cheat. Long may it continue.
Nadal has this arrogance about him that his style of play is the correct one (despite the fact tennis was created completely contrary to it). He rubbishes serve and volley in interviews, stands behind the baseline hitting moonball after moonball, and he never in a million years anticipated that someone would be able to deal with it and make him look stupid. Every loss he endures brings us a step closer to the day we never have to watch this wrecker again.

He seemed very gracious in defeat yesterday, saying Djokovic was the better player and deserved to win.
And yes, I'm sure he's really unhappy with life right now, if only the millionaire 13-time Grand Slam holder could have achieved what you have done in your life

I really have high hopes with Nishokori, Dimi. They are closing it to the big guys and I think they will now not lose to the likes to Murray or Ferrer. In fact they are almost ready to beat even Nadal/ Djokovic and in slams too.
There is no point of keeping any expectations with Gulbis. He will remain dangerous for anyone, but that's all. I hope I'm wrong here and he beats everyone to success.

I like Nishi, but can't really see him win slams. His style of play is not helped by his fragile health/stamina.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:

With Dimi, he has the potential, but is a long way away from slam finals and semifinals still; I am really worried for him having Rasheed as a coach, I hope he doesn't ruin him like he did Tsonga, he needs to get rid of him asap.
Did you get the chance to see Dominic Thiem?

Djoko is showing clinically how limited Nadal's game.
Djoko cannot do that versus Federer.
Nadal can show how physically superior he is to Federer but most of the time for a set, Fed is also showing Nadal how to play. Probelm for fed is that on those dead slow courts he is bound to be dragged to that phsyical battle...otherwise, it woudl not be close between Fed and Nadal. Fed leads the bagel H2H!
