Happy new year to everyone.
The new year celebrations this year have been subdued by the sad demise of a girl who struggled for life for 14 days after being gang raped by 6 beast in a moving bus. The whole nation is sad and in rage. Crime against women is a shame for the nation. Unfortunately its highly prevalent in my country. Government does nothing.
I only wish that this year brings a safe environment for women all over the world.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!
I also wish the world is going to become the place, where the truth, keeping the human rights and good will win,
and also wish many nice tennis moments and fun with jokers and Djoker's successful moments

You see I thought your country would be one of the least likely place to have those kind of things. Is that a new phenomenon or has it always, more or less, been like that?

Not new at all, they have been since the the beginning. But there has been a very steep rise in the crime rate against women. But its also likely that they were always there but just coming more into news due to the development of mass media. The society and the their own families often blames the victim for the crime and in order to avoid the news spreading across, as much as 60-70% of the cases aren't even reported to police.
The religion, the culture, the ideals, the holy books, the epics, the mythological stories, traditions etc. have for 1000s of years been promoting misogynistic ideas,
objectification of women, inequality of gender. They are responsible for
creating an atmosphere where some girls don't have the right to be
born. A large section of society just doesn't respect women.
In my neighborhood a couple had a baby girl yesterday evening. It should have been a great new year celebration for them. But instead there was no atmosphere of joy at all. The mother of the new born was crying deeply. Why? Because everyone in her family wanted a son and she has delivered a girl. And that too for a second time [ They already have a 6 year old daughter ].
Unfortunate for the new born little child, its going to hurt her all her life now because she is an unwanted/unloved child who is seen as a burden.
India might look good from the outside, its not actually.

Hopman cup being played in Perth this week. Serbia playing Australia tonight (Djokovic vs Tomic , Ivanovic vs Delaqua). The players were treated to a New Year's Ball, don't Novak and Ana look good?

Recognising this is a sign of wisdom. Unfortunately many countries think they are good "inside" and problems only come from outside.
Is one reason because marrying a girl is expensive in traditional India and that represents an heavy burden on a poor family?

Ana certainly looks amazing there. In fact I did not recognise her.

Did you know that before Brits invaded India (and abolished the custom), wife would be burned alive to death alongside her husband at his funeral?Tenez wrote:raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:

The custom (sati) is still occasionally practised by widows regardless of their age.
