Zverev is not to be ignored, he looked powerful this morning. And he can serve again.

Not sure how Nadal can complain about the warning. Take it on the chin and get on with it.

If Thiem loses this set, I can see him falling off a cliff and Nadal motor right through him.

LK, did you see Federer yesterday after his code violation?

I did indeed. For him must’ve felt unusual. Thing is the players know it’s in place and still they lose their shit over it.

Hmm. switch-around here.
Very big service game coming up here for Nadal.

It’s not about the maturity. Right now you can see Nadal’s confidence is low. He knows it would be a steal to take the second. For me it’s the momentum. Nadal takes this second and I think he’ll take it in 4.
Thiem needs this 2nd. More so because of how bad Nadal is playing. Got to take advantage.

How can this idiot of McEnroe say that Nadal is the best volleyer.

Very tough for Nadal now. Two and a quarter hours in already for two sets and he has to win taking this very long now.
Zverev will be delighted unless Thiem takes this in three.

The 2 big stats so far are:
6 Return points won 19 for Thiem
and BP converted 2/2 for Nadal and only 2/7 for Thiem.

Hope she's ok.
It was chocolate eyes and caramel skin, my bad. She's probably been terminated by the twitteratti for racism.

I did not see that one coming but Thiem looked tired. But so must be Nadal. However he shows it less.

Mhmm… this is not over yet. Thiem's level this set not what it was at the tail end of the second. I hope it is just a dip and he is not getting tired.
BTW, this may be the first I am seeing a player sweat more than Rafa.

Re: Australian Open - 2020
I woke up at 5:5 in the second. Thiem played some immense points from there to the end of the second set. If he could keep that up, he would win. But maybe he could not?
Some of his gets quite impressive too.
I see Rafa was up a break in each of the first two sets.

Re: Australian Open - 2020
Disappointed by Thiem. When tired, you need to find a way to make Nadal run. He He should not try try to hit through Nadal when he has less legs. It will shorten rallies, hence make Nadal fitter and he will make Thiem run more in turn.
Like Djokovic, you have to bite the bullet and make Nadal run. And quickly his shots will get shorter and then easier to pull winners.
Thiem could have won the FO had he followed that rule 2 years ago.

Hopefully Thiem just got a little tight in the third (he was always a bit of a choker), got it out of his system, and now can cruise to victory through easy service games. Rafa also not playing as well as he did earlier.

An insurance break would be nice. I can very easily see Thiem choking serving for the match at 5:4.

After all these years, Thiem still does not have Plan B.
Regardless, so far so good.

The time Nadal takes between serves and 2nd serve is ridiculous. Once he is gone they will fix that 2 serve too.

One more game. Thiem should try to break now, not sure how well he will handle the pressure when serving.

Here we go. One service game. Thiem should win it - he has been the better player, and is playing well here in the third. But I think it may be now or never, don't know how well he would handle being broken here.

LOL. 4UEs. I so saw it coming.
Have to go to work soon, likely will not be able to stay through the end of the 4th - esp if they go TB.
Good luck Dominic!

That's the problem with those moonballers, retrievers like Nadal, Thiem, Djoko, Murray, Zverev. They have no balls!
But they are fighters. They will fight till the end. Doesn't require courage, just grit and tenacity.

That’s not consigned to moonballers
The tour is littered with bottlers and plonkers.
What Nadal and Djokovic do brilliantly is keep themselves in check when it’s not going right.

Yes but the attacling players get a good ranking thanks to their gutsy game whereas the retriever get it through the difficulty it is for their opponent to pull winners under pressure.legendkillar wrote:That’s not consigned to moonballers

There’s nothing gutsy in being stupid and trying to short the long odds. I love attacking play. Some are talented enough to sustain it, others not and get tricked by bravery.
Granted Nadal and Djokovic play with huge margins of safety, but now and then those margins get breached.
This match is an example of Thiem doing all the hard work to put himself in a position to win and fucks it. Nadal and Djokovic in such situations rarely fuck it. Nadal and Djokovic will not try to outsmart themselves unlike most players.
