It was a disaster. Tragedy.I wouldn't want to be in Marin's coach's shoes tonight. What do you tell a guy who is going be asking himself "why" for a very long time...

Hehe. Don't know about life but enjoying tennis. I went to the USO on Sunday. That was the first time I saw Nole live - he was quite impressive. How about you and your sleepless nights? How do you do it? I occasionally do crazy stuff for the AO but you seem to be staying up late every night. Hope you are finding time to get some sleep.

I am. Managed to catch up a few hours today. That's why I can watch the match now.
Just a few more nights, so I should survive.
I love the deadness of the night, listening to music & catching up on my inner life

I am surprised how well Bird can contain Fed's aggression at the moment.

Fed rather subdued. Berdych playing well but not that well. Hit some lovely returns though.

I think he's great on balance. Striking the ball great, and able to rally with Fed from the base-line winning points. That's new.summerblues wrote:Fed rather subdued. Berdych playing well but not that well. Hit some lovely returns though.
After seeing him live and from close up, I've realised how hard it is to play him. His balls are so fast, flat and low.
Fed does look a bit subdued, but he didn't start subdued.

Berdych is firing his shots. Fed really needs to do something and quick.

Oh My God..What a play from Berdych. He really brings his best game against Federer. very strong mentally against Fed, I just don't see him so tough against any other player. Perhaps he takes Fed as a challenge.

Maybe Fed was just trying to show everyone that it is not only Andy that players choke against.

Quite a risky strategy, no? for sure and tbh Andy played a different match after 5-2 down.
Fed has done this time and again, rotla will have to figure out if Cilic was a bigger choke or ~Berdy is

Fed did not do that much to break back, he played a decent game and Berdych did the rest.

I hope Fed wins but not sure how much he really deserves it. He was down and out, spraying it all over the place and did not have to do that much to get back into it.

This is Fed's territory and it will need a flawless performance from anyone to knock him out. Winning Toronto/cincy is never a good thing when comin to USO.

Murray's path gets easier. I think Fed wasted too much energy in winning the masters. Andy desrves this slam more than anyone else. I wont be shocked if Delpo takes Djoker out as well.

Roger made too many UEs and Berdy was having his day. Berdy will be back to his usual non-performance in the semi.
Veejay, Errani is playing Serena and if the match is played early then Serena might struggle. I hate Serena's post matches speeches, so full of nicey nicey fakeness.

Re: US open 2012: Matches of the Day: Day 10
I watched the first set live (coudl not sleep) and the loss of that first set was really weird as Fed with a proper serve coudl have won it 61. I believe he had a BP to go 4/0 up and an easy volley which he decides to drive volley and puts it in the net. Then his first serve % really goes down quickly (though looking at the stats, it's still decent). He moved very well in those first games and was toying with Berdych.
I was even going to point out how his mouvement was much better than in FO and most of WImby, but his serve was completely useless, especially the second one.
Also to lose that TB 7/1 is so unlike him. I noticed that he was rushing between serves, as if he was in a hurry or not interested (not saying that was teh case but looked like so). But then I have not seen the remaining 3 sets so not sure what happened after that.

Re: US open 2012: Matches of the Day: Day 10
Roger was making too many errors, bit disappointed with his loss. I am not a big fan of Berdych's game and his personality.
It is quite strange that Berdych was out in dumps after Wimby,Oly, Toronto and Cincy losses and now he comes here at USO and turns the tide completely
Again he will have no whatsoever chnace against Murray. Murray-Fed match at USO would have been classic but Berdych has denied us of that opportunity. SOcal maybe right that 'fognini factor' does work in a negative way. We have seen it twice now.
Delpo will shock Djoker.

Re: US open 2012: Matches of the Day: Day 10
I watched first two sets and then just could not keep my eyes open any more so crept to the sofa and collapsed thinking the match would go on for a while. So I woke up at 5 only to find the replay of Murray Cilic!
A two click trip to US Open website, and I can't say I was not surprised by the score.
Fed started very well, I haven't seen the game in which Berd broke back in the first (making one of those espressos) but the key must lie in that game, because Fed just lost that initial confidence he stated the match with for some reason.
His forehand started off so well, he could've not been more aggressive if he tried!
I expected a rollover like he did with Novak in Cincy.
Bird seems to have had a bit between his teeth last night and I'm happy for his win, he was due a big one as his tennis and ball-striking is great and far more pleasing than Murray's, yet he gets no hype and no credit.

When Nole beat Berdych in WTF last year, it was a very close three setter, Berd is hard to contain when he's let loose.
You can get under his skin a bit, but not as bad as with Raonic, he has toughened up and matured a lot.
I wish him another slam final. It will be interesting to see how he approaches Murray.
I wonder how he gets on with Lendl....

A funny moment from Berd's press conference:
"World No. 7 Tomas Berdych, who upended No. 1 Roger Federer at the U.S.
Open, is offended when asked if the Czechs have a certain mentality that
allows them to take down highly ranked players, and if his win
compared to fellow Czech Lukas Rosol’s defeat of Rafael Nadal at
Wimbledon. Rosol is currently ranked No. 91.
“Well, I just hope you're not comparing me with Lukas Rosol,” Berdych
said. “First of all, I don't think that we are in the same position,
that it's actually that big upset."

Federer played poor in those important points. Apart from the opening game and the a bit more, Fed didn't get much chance against Berdy at all till the mid of 3rd set and almost 0 in the 4th.
Berdych played fantastic. I think he is kind of Federer Hunter. He likes the challenge which Fed puts up to him and is highly determined to beat him. It has to do with his win against Fed in Athens 2004. Berdy at time can be mentally weak, but against Fed he is about completely fearless and disregard of who is he playing against. I never expect Berdy to be an easy opponent for Fed.

I am not very disappointed he lost cause in that form he certainly woudl have been crushed by Murray and Djoko. Surprising to see such heighs and lows from him from one tournament to the next and now within a set even!!
Berdych in that first set was simply Birdych, did not see something Fed could not typically handle but Fed's serve was nowhere near its best.

Typical of what annoys me about Berdych. If you think Fed is arrogant, imagine Berdych with 17 slams! (where is the puking smiley?)

I think he does have that mindset, but who are the other top players: Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, they all run balls a bit better than Fed and can supress Berd a bit better with defence. Fed needs his serve to do it.

oh, don't be so hard on young Berd...he's just proud of himself right now, and rightly so, he beat Fed on Ashe in NY, he said after the match that was his best moment so far, so quite a compliment for Fed (as if he needs any more).
And as for smileys...I wish I could use one now... you know which one don't you?
But I know what you mean, there's something very chavvy about Berd and his team, still, it all adds to variety and that's why its so fascinating to follow the tour.

I guess it helps knowing that it won't be a physical challenge and that points are kept short and you can get easy points....unlike the other top 4 where each point is a tough battle and that this battle will get tougher to win as the match drags on.

If arrogance drives someone to play this well, then I don't mind any arrogant tennis players. But i don't think it was arrogance here. Berdy is ranked #7 and has troubled Fed irrespective of the result of the match. The last time they played in slam, Berdy beat him. He does feel highly motivated up to Fed's challenge and enjoys it.
This is no comparison with Rosol. Rosol never played Nadal before IIRC. But in that match he was motivated to beat Nadal. Some would even see arrogance in Rosol in that match.
I wish Cilic and Raonic too were somewhat arrogant. They appear too good to be able to disregard anyone who they face. Its needed to win big.

Good point. Very often those with the immaculate, nicety-nice facade are the most arrogant of all. Afraid to show their emotions in order to preserve some kind of image.
I don't think Cilic has that problem, but Raonic definitely does. Cilic just lacks confidence, that's why I feel so sorry for him about this loss, it will play on his mind like crazy.

I see the difference between Rosol's achievement and Berdych's but there is a way to say it....and not like "how dare you compare...."
In fact I thought Rosol's perf was much more impressive...he showed guts, Berdych it seems was close to chocking set 2 from what I read.

So does anyone think that Rogers walk over cost him a little?
I dont think he would have won the U.S Open anyway, the night matches leaves way too little time for him to recover, but I did expect at least a semi final appearance
