Surprised me the way he is holding his nerves together under the pressure of being the defending champion.summerblues wrote:6:4 first set to Stan. Stan looking pretty good.

Verdy playing pretty well. He has to in order to shake Djoko off. Djko is everywhere as usual.

Verdy will make it close for a set then will collapse.

Verdasco is a good warm up for Raonic: big serve, big wide FHs.
Nole so unnecessary passive in his returning games.

Nole's BH digs are impressive, the ones when he turns his body and hits the ball with a single arm with bis back facing the net, I need to learn it, as I tend to swap hands and hit the left handed FH instead

Nole is making Verdasco look better than he is.
He should have broken him ages ago, if it wasn't for him being passive.
I have no idea why he plays like that - a bit like Monfils, he is quite capable of attacking it would make his life so much easier (well, quicker, at least).
Must be mentally easier for him, as it's much less pressure and he know Verdasco will start missing sooner or later - you can see he is playing with zero belief.

Faster day conditions are providing much better tennis.
The evening session is baaaaaad.....so energy sapping if you want to hit through the court!

Nole looks sedated...like he's just got out of bed, no sharpness on his FH...
Is it me, or does the court play slower than ever?

Verdasco is doing a bit of Smy here...
I must admit, I can't get these pros bowing down to better ranked players during the match...don't they have any competitive pride?
Fake humility...the deepest type of vanity, a way of dealing with being beaten.
Looks like it so difficult for some to just go out and play and take the loss on the chin with dignity.
I really can't stand this clapping opponents good shots...so weak!

Such a flat match...
There weren't many competitive ones so far anyway. Quite a disappointing AO so far, hopefully should get better in week two.
That aside, Muller and F.Lopez through, nice!
Gimmie a tennis player over a serving tree any day

I am not surprised, he has matured a bit and these playing conditions are made for his game. He won't be easy to take out.

Well, I think Nole played better in day conditions. I don't think he enjoys slogging on very slow courts any more than Verdasco, just that he defends a lot better than him.
You'll see it when he gets to play Stan in the semis, Stan won't have trouble hitting through Nole at all and I really look forward to that match as Nole will have to bring his A game.

Re: Australian Open 2015: Matches of the day: Day 6 24-Jan-2015
You just know there were no upsets, when a day has less than 2 pages of comments. Couldn't watch any matches, so nice to see some comments on the matches.
With the lack of upsets, 9 of the top 10 seeds have now reached the second week. Amazing consistency and superiority over the rest. Most of them got through unscathed even, with the notable exceptions of Nadal and Dimitrov who were in trouble in R2/ R3 respectively. So here are my fingers crossed for some more upsets, or this could be one boring GS.
