Q. You played so well in your first‑round win. The All England Club asked you to change your footwear. I'm wondering whether that had any effect on your movement.
ROGER FEDERER: No, it didn't have any effect.
========================
One who does not complain....but interesting to hear that the pros were asked to play with different soles and that may certainly have afftected his confidence in his grounds shots.

Looking at Igor Sijsling with Rao and have to say that Rao's move looks like Titanic in a pond. Igor is definitely better player on the court.

Problem is that in those slow conds the serve is not a weapon. Wimbledon has been doing its best to diminish the role of serve and Rao's game is essentially about serve.
So I am in fact not surprised to see him struggle here.....probably worse than the FO for him nowadays.

This grass looks a bit clayish. Rao is the player no. 10, so he should also have anything else than serve. Actually I can not remember somebody who moves so clumsy as he does. That is striking.

The thing is on those slippery surfaces, the taller people are much more at risk than shorter ones so his mouvement is certainly going to be exposed here.
You had plenty of players ranked 10 and above with just a serve. Roddick to start with. Rao has also a great FH but it seems something is wrong with him atm.

Rodick moved much better than Rao. I just can not see tha Rao's move can be improved enough to do another step up to get on real top.Tenez wrote:The thing is on those slippery surfaces, the taller people are much more at risk than shorter ones so his mouvement is certainly going to be exposed here.

They didn't like the bright orange colour of the soles of his trainers and I think the Wimbledon logo holding number 7 of his titles:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/wimbledon/10142921/Roger-Federer-banned-from-wearing-new-Nike-trainers-at-Wimbledon-because-of-orange-soles.html
Which is lame because all women players seem to wear colourful shorts under their dresses....

Rao on hard court is actually a good mover for his size. What we see on grass today might not tell the whole truth. He will never be a chang or Nadal but people not so long ago were saying how well he covers teh ground for such a big size. He even beat Murray twice, including once on clay...and one cannot do that with a serve only.

If it is teh colour only, it's fine but do we know whether the white ones had teh same specs as teh orange ones?

We can only guess. I don't if he played the first match in the orange ones. He must have trained in those as well.

Rao is surely on hc much more stabil and plays with more control than on the grass. After I saw his match with Igor I have to say that his poor move affected his composure too much on the court, much more than I would expect it. He struggled with his move so much, that he hardly went to the net for a volley. His overal performance on the grass is a big disappointment for me.

..and for me...but again when I saw how slow it was on Monday....I am not that surprised. As mentioned when you have 2 great servers like Fed and Hanescu pulling only 10 aces in 3 sets between the 2 of them.....on fresh grass...just shows how slow the conds are.
Did you see how far back Slijing was standing v Rao? That would have been unthinkable on grass before. He beat Rao playing clay tennis.

So far it is really weirdish match. Nole is not focused on the game properly, too many mistakes. He does not play with an easiness and coolness yet. Hopefully it is going to be better since the second..

Yes, Igor stays further behind the BL, not only in that match. Rao's serve forces a player to stand further, no surprise. Look at the final 2008, where a tennis miracle Nadal stood on return then. Igor was two metres closer the BL. Otherwise Igor is enough intelligent to know what works for him well.

2:0 for Nole.
I suppose this is the "get the job done and avoid any upset" scenario for him. Does it safely and with minimal fuss.
Hopefully will relax and have fun soon.
C'mon Nole, light that morgue up

Interesting comment from Nole in the post-match interview: the conditions were slower when the roof closed compared to his first match.

It would be interesting to catch the end of Zemlja-Dimitrov (yet to check what time/court). Dimitrov serving to stay in the match at 8:9.
Just read this paragraph, and sounds very interesting:
"Something to think about: Kubot, Paire, Mannarino, Brown, Almagro, Janowicz, Melzer, Stakhovsky—one of these men will be a semifinalist."
It's interesting as well as exciting, isn't it!
The winner will potentially play Murray for the final. Even more interesting !

After reading this, Tomic proves the old saying that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...
"The players that I think don't get too ahead of themselves, but focus on their matches, have the best chance of winning," said Tomic. "I think a lot of people were happy when Nadal lost. I think Roger was very happy. I think he got ahead of himself - then things turned around."
As pretty much everybody said on Wednesday: "Ouch."
That was a jibe at Federer as a "revenge" for Federer's AO comment in which he said stg similar about Tomic.
The only difference was that Tomic had previously started boasting he was going to beat Federer in that a/o match. As far as I can remember, he received a bit of schooling in tennis from Fed in that match.

Raonic lost. He had shown so much promise a 18 months ago and looked the one to take things on for the new young players. But he has gone backwards instead. Very disappointing
I think BC may be right when he say the current crop of new young players are simply not good enough to beat the top guys. Leave physicality, they clearly lack in ability and belief itself.

Typical of the big mouth Tomic. He already thinks that when Fed/Nadal/Djokovic have gone there won't be anyone left so he is guaranteed to win slams in future. He is too cocky for the results he has had till now. I doubt he will ever win even a Masters.

And what is Tomic saying there? if not getting ahead of himself by giving lessons to a 17 slams champion when he has yet to reach a 1/4F on one!?
