I watched a bit of Rafa's practice session earlier today. The first time I saw him live. Looks just like on TV. Well I suppose he should. I may have a look at Shapovalov's practice this afternoon. But I will be starting my day with Kohli and Millman.

The court is very slow as Dhumsur can retrieve his bullets from corner to corner. But I suspect the slow court helps him and Shapo as it cuts down their UEs.

And he doesn't hesitate to go DTL. A big weapon.

yes agreed. tries to show some guts but he needs the crowd to get in the way of Mayer. Poor form again from the spaniard.

and you can see the effect of the crowd in a closed roof can do here.

Already a better service game by Federer than in rounds 1 & 2.

Thanks.  As always, it was an enjoyable day.  I only got to see Rubi out of these three.  I had never seen him before.  But he does not really do it for me at all.  He is just a ball basher.  I saw Shapovalov practice for 15 minutes and in that time he hit more spectacular shots than Rublev in 1.5 sets that I saw.

The only intriguing thing about him is his face.  I had not watched him before so was not prepared for it.  He looks like some half-mad tortured soul right out of Dostoyevsky.

Fed looking quite sharp to start the match. Let's see if it lasts.

I thought Rafa looked a little better today than against Daniel, but still very shaky.  If he does not improve, then Dolgopolov next round, or either of Goffin/Rublev after that, could have a good chance.  But I suspect Rafa will likely improve.

Federer looking far, far better than in the previous rounds at the moment.

This is a different player.  I do not know who was the guy in Rd1 and Rd2.  He looks superb so far.  Fingers crossed this lasts.  But if Federer that has shown up today thus far plays Rafa that was playing today, I am liking Fed's chances.

What a BH pass.

First set in 24 minutes, Fed playing superb and looking all casual like he is somewhere in 2nd gear.  This is the best I have seen him since Indian Wells.  Once again, fingers crossed this is how he is going to be the rest of the tournament.

But not as good as he used to be.  He used to never miss any smashes, these days you will see him mess up more of them.

Wow. This is very high calibrate tennis, and Federer looks immense.

Two sets in 58 minutes.  This is just what the doctor ordered, even though the second set was not as spectacular as the first.

Pity to lose that break but the tennis is excellent.

Oh dear Roger no.  Two sets and a break up, he serves a miserable game.  Now if he is not careful this could stretch to four sets and it will all be looking much less happy.

Comfortably the performance of the tournament. Lopez played great, Federer was superb.

Great finish by Roger.  He did not want to go to TB.  Very nicely done.  The way Roger stepped it up in the last game also showed that Roger indeed had some gears to spare.  I thought that Lopez was actually playing quite well himself, which makes tonight's result even more impressive.

That said, Lopez is a good match-up for Fed.  But so is Youzhny and yet Fed struggled against him.

All in all, a very encouraging match.
