McEnroe to coach Roanic

Interesting isn't it? It's clear McEnroe's main goal is Wimbledon, Raonic' best slam until now. If only Mac could pass on 20% of his touch, we very well might have a winner. I'm not sure about Mac's coaching abilities though, imo Wilander would be a better pick, for any player.

Re: McEnroe to coach Roanic
Completely agree regarding WIlander over Mc. They both achieved as much (7 slams each) but one with a fraction of teh talent of the other ....so probably had a better understanding of the game.
It's quite bizarre those players hiring legends as coach!
Before Murray ....not a single player had won his first slam being coached by a former slam winner.
..and I still think Lendl did not contribute as much to Murray slams as other circumstances helping Murray.

I saw that, understood he was going to be an adviser...
Not sure what Mac can teach Raonic. The two are unreconcilable opposites in every way.
You can't teach touch and you can't make those massive legs nimble and supple at the net.
Raonic also does not time his serve that well, it's more brute, prdictable, linear flat force which Federer dismantled with ease two years ago.
I think his best surface is clay.
Also, he hasn't been fully fit for a long time. Either that or he's hit his glass ceiling which is why he called Mac to wave some magic wand.
I don't think it will last long. Same as Sharapova&Connors.

It might be a marketing coup too.

Has mccenroe ever coached anyone before? I remember around 08 he seemed really keen to coach Roger
Looking at how much Djokovic and Murray improved under Lendl and Becker I actually think Roger would have done really well had he taken either on board

Federer made a mistake of not changing his racquet sooner. That was more important than all the "legend" coaches put together.
From what we know, Annacone was opposing it, which is why I believe he got sacked in the end.
All these legends have enormous egos, they are basically uncoachable. Nole doesn't which is why he managed to get on with Becker.
Murray, Federer...they need the "whispering listener"...Lendl managed to put up with it only briefly.
I thought Edberg added a nice touch. I would love to know why he REALLY left.
Did he get discouraged and lost hope?
Ljubicic...was a bad and desperate choice for Maestro. From a horse to a donkey.
Federer gets coached through the mind.
Of all the "legends", I think Navratilova would have possibly been able to give good perception and put the foot down if she insisted on a change.

I think Becker brought nothing on the table...nor in the cupboard!!! Lendl certainly had some influence but teh best Murray has played was USO 2014.....where he lost v Djoko. That was his best perforance ever imo. ...and that was without Lendl.

You are right about the cupboard only.
As for Lendl/Murray...Lendl unearthed Murray's FH. However bad it was - he started using it.
It will never be a weapon or a nice, versatile, natural shot for him, but at least he's got it to the stage where he can hammer it safely in the pre-drilled scenarios.
I think that would not have been possoble witout Lendl wno laid the foundation there.
But you are right, Murray was super lucky in USO 13, he had two nights of terrible wind and players who hate playing in it: Berduch in the SF and Nole in the F.
Wimbledon was fixed.

I don't think Wimbledon was fixed. Nole was tired from his 5 setter with Delph....yet I would have fancied his chance had he won that 3rd set.

Re: McEnroe to coach Roanic
Nole in 2013 was fragile. His tennis was stuck in mud, wheels digging themselves deeper and deeper.
He needed to be pulled out and that is what Becker did the year after.
I watched Nole against Berdych in Wimbledon that same year from very close up. He struggled but played his usual gritty way out.
He may have been tired in the final.
I only saw a few opening games.
He was not his normal self... I knew he'd lose there and then and I turned TV off.
Not because he was tired, but because there was no will to fight at all in him.
That to me said it was fixed.

Can't see this helping much Milo, Mac is an old pair of socks, Milo needs some fresh perspective, but he's just too big, though moves acceptable for a big guy.
Hope he wins a GS one day, before that Korgi.
