Who Is The Favourite For Roland Garros 1015?
Who Is The Favourite For Roland Garros 2015?
For the first time after so many years, bookies have Novak Djokovic as this year's favourite for Roland Garros.
Roland Garros tournament director Gilbert Ysern does not want to adjust Nadal's ranking as he sees Nadal's current position a true reflection of his form.
"We thought about it. We could not not ask the question for a champion like him, who has embodied the tournament for 10 years and only once not won a match. But the circumstances are different.
In 2013, he came in injured. Today, it is his sporting level, it seems, which has fallen. He is not hampered. So, we will not adjust the seedings in his favour."
Federer still sees Nadal as the main favourite despite his results in 2015:
"At the French Open, Rafa for me is still the favourite alongside Djokovic who has been playing so well.
Even though Nadal's form is not as good as in previous years, I still believe when the French Open rolls around he is going to be very difficult to beat."
Patric Mouratglou says Nadal can't beat Nole any more.
"I honestly do not see him as winner of the tournaments in Madrid and Rome, especially after his last matches. I think that he can not beat Novak Djokovic in the next tournaments.
For Nadal it will be hard to beat him, he has to try to get victories and confidence. I have not seen him in a position to beat the Serb, Djokovic is virtually untouchable from the start of the season, he won everything and is in very good shape."
What do you think?

Depends on the draw but if Nadal and Nole are on the same side of it, you know what I am voting...

I'll go for Rublev!
Yes the draw is going to be key. Though Fed looks very fragile in slams nowadays. So Nishi or Djoko for me.

On paper Nole should clean it...but then again, I said that last year, too....and the year before...
I dunno what to think any more...
In short....Anyone But Nadal!

Is Federer playing pre-Madrid mind games with Nadal (or even Nole by putting him behind Nadal!) calling Nadal the favourite?
Or does he know something we don't....

Patric Mouratglou has right view at tennis players game quality. But we all proper fans need to be aware that there are two aspects of making such a statement. It is own game aspect and the other one which goes behind the game. I.e. the draw, the clay, the balls, weather conditions, mad crowds, matches scheduling, umpires toleration to time violation .... The slowest clay with slowest balls can quite offset a lack of game quality in Nadal's favor. I must say that RG is the tournament that can hurt a player's game quality in the biggest extent. Therefore nothing is sure there.

That was not the case before Nadal's time.
Now, Chatrier looks like Nadal's arena where players are thrown to him like slaves to lions in The Colosseum...

I have again played recently with Babolat and Dunlop balls. And the difference is huge. Dunlop's are considerably faster and they are those used in MC and Barcelona but also Madrid and Rome (i believe as I knew they were but unsure they still are).
So when comes the FO Nadal will have that added help about dealing with dead balls.

Re: Who Is The Favourite For Roland Garros 2015?
That is very disappointing from RG.
Shouldn't they try and match the balls with other big tournaments on clay?
I suppose this year they'll be even more desperate... just imagine: Rafael Nadal, a 10 times Roland Garros champion, King of Clay, living legend...best player on clay that's ever picked up a racquet..
I can hear it all already...he's got to be stoooooopped!!!!!

RG had been the tournament with the most surprises even before Nadal. I remember my office coleagues as regular betters on tennis matches, who could hardly earn a profit from betting on RG favorites then. It is simple, the outsiders with good legs can upset players with better shot making very often there. Clay is just exhausting surface with many bad ball bouncing where legs, power and stamina play a dominant role.

I agree Paul. Clay is a very special surface. you can start well on it and then suddenly lose your footing/confidence. But it has always rewarded the physical and consistent players, those applying biggest margins.
This is why nadal has an absolutely amazing record there ....like Borg had before him.

Yes, clay is the most physical surface...opposite of grass, but I don't remember it ever being physical at this exclusive, extreme level in the past...fitness was an advantage but not everything.
With Nadal, it's physicality and nothing else that's allowing him this unprescedented dominance.
Where would he be without the bicep?

I am going to Lenglen for QF this year...in theory, Nadal could be playing Nole there.
I heard Lenglen plays faster and does not suit Nadal.
I think he complained a lot one year when he was scheduled to play on it...King of Clay!!!!
Yes, a "special needs" king of clay...if he was really that good on it, he'd be good in all clay conditions.

We also play with Dunlop Forte, but their quality has dropped drastically recently. 5 years ago we could play about 10 sets with them, now they are finished after 2-3 sets. Babolat balls, it is a joke, isn't it? Never played with them.
It is going to be that we will also change balls after 7 games soon, as producers guarantee. Every products' durability is just shorter than used to be.

If you think Dunlop fort don't last don't try the babolat. They last a set at max....and that at my local club level.
Dunlop forte are still amongst the most durable...what happens is that in 10 years the way of playing has seriously sped up with the new strings too so that might be one reason why they don;t last as much.

Yep correct and the Heads are the worst.....well ok when new but last 3 games.
Just seen Zverev for the first time......not impressed. He moves well for his size but he has no shot. SO rallying when you are 2m is a very bad idea!

I fail to see what the big deal is with him, too...
OK, he can keep the ball in play, has good length but that's ALL!
Same as Coric minus the steroids...
Surely, Rublev is so much better... he actually has a game and takes the destiny with his own racquet!

Guys.... wrong Zverev. That was Mischa Murray played who is 6'3, 27 and is ranked at 600+ in the world.
The other is 6'6, 18 and just outside the top 100.

I wasn't talking about Misha, that's the older brother.
Didn't watch Murray play him today either...in fact, I've never seen him play at all.
The young one, Alexander's the one I was thinking.

LOL! Thanks> I thought he looked big and old for his age. I also thought the other zverev lost yesterday so was surprised to see him again today....
Damn...I still have to watch the real Zverev then.

Re: Who Is The Favourite For Roland Garros 2015?
Revisiting this thread now after Madrid & Rome...
Nishi looks worse
Nadal the same minus confidence
Fed better
Nole better
Murray better.
Again, how much will this mean in Paris?
My prediction is that Nadal will get a very easy draw and come out of blocks demolishing his opponents in week one trying to patch up & rebuild his invoncible physical image.
It will take a huge effort for anyone but Nole to stop him there, maybe Murray ( that's a very big maybe).
If the final was played on Chatrier today - I am 100% Nole would win in 3 sets.
So let's see what difference a rigged draw is going to make...

I woudl be sure Djoko woudl win the first 2 sets OR close to winning the first 2....but not sure he woudl win in 3.....And if he did not win the first 2, then I am not even sure he woudl win in 5. Djoko failed 3 times in the past despite having the upper hand in the pre-FO tournaments.

I am aware of all that.
Nole is a better player this year, also looks stronger physically ( or maybe that's just the freshness from skipping Madrid) whereas Nadal has not improved anything.
From memory Nadal played a close match against Nole in Rome last year, this year Stan dumped him out in QF.

And though Djoko is very fit he still does very badly under the sun. I believe this is the reason he lost to Nishi at the USO. As he runs a lot, the added heat makes it much worse for him than Nadal who simply was raised in scorching temps.

I think so. If it was not for the night interruption, I am pretty sure Djoko woudl have won...though it always very difficult to predict which of the 2 will be the more exhausted in the 5th......though in general over 5 sets Djoko has I believe the better record.luvsports! wrote:So Nole gotta hope for '12 conditions again?

Re: Who Is The Favourite For Roland Garros 2015?
Interesting how quickly pundits jump on bandwagons...
Pat McEnroe:
"I think this could be a real crossroads tournament for Nadal. I don't see him sticking around if he drops out of the top 10, if he loses relatively early, which is actually possible.
I think it would be a huge psychological blow to him. In addition to the fact that, you know, just the way he plays, there's so much effort expended. He doesn't have the same ease of just striking the ball as Djokovic and Federer obviously. So I hope it doesn't happen, but I think it could be a very quick fall for him.
I never underestimate the heart of a champion.I don't think it's his heart, though, that would do it. Obviously his heart and his commitment will be there. I think it's his body. If his body and his mind start to break down, and I think they sort of go hand-in-hand, I think that would be his downfall. It's not that he's not going to want it. If reality sets in in a way that he doesn't think he can do it anymore, I think he could be done pretty quickly."
Chris Evert:
"I kind of feel that way, too. In every other year where he's had sort of a slow start, you're right, he's always depended on the clay court season to get that confidence back, then that set him up for the rest of the year where he's ended up pretty well. I think if you take away the clay court season for him confidence-wise, I just think it's going to be that much tougher for him to be grinding it out on the hard courts. I think it will affect him."
To me, Nadal and Djokovic are the main favourites for this RG, but others could sneak in depending on how the draw pans out. So many things can happen.
We all know Nole will be under big pressure to win it and that traditionally he does not deal with it that great.
My question is how much pressure is Nadal under right now (self-imposed or from sponsors) and how he is going to cope/deal with it.
He likes to be considered an underdog, but will he actually really feel like that this time, since he is definitely suffering from lack of confidence.
Or is he just a simple opportunist and will as usual slime his way/title out of hands like a fish...

I remember you challenged the concept of "mental strength" linking it with fitness ages ago.
People were associating Nadal's fighting spirit with his mental strength.
Commentators were feeding their imagination with all the sales lingo, of course.
Now, that his fitness is not such a distinguishing force, rather than addressing it properly, they paddle another nonsense: he is declining!
It's interesting how the less famous and media exposed McEnroe brother - Patric is telling the truth, whereas John continues to spin fables.
He's been quiet about RG so far, though.

I got disappointed with Nishi's gutlessness recently...
Murray will need to beat Ferrer first.
That could be a good one to watch.
I really like this year's draw, it's so well balanced tennis wise.
I can't remember last time I got so excited about a slam like this!

Interesting.
From what I saw esp in Madrid/Rome, he doesn't give up in a classic way, bides his time and then pounces back on as soon as he can instead...it's the fact he doesn't take it on the chin but hides in the corner...

Re: Who Is The Favourite For Roland Garros 2015?
I just saw this photo of Nole in Paris, probably a close gathering for his birthday...so many people, so much love for him and he alone in the middle of it all...
The silent, steely, suffocating expectation...
I really hope the pressure does not burn him alive.

...but there is one love that quenches all fears and gives wings to a soul:
Go Nole. With God, nothing is impossible.

he is certainly the proof of that cause frankly I can't see anything natural that could have made him such a champion one day!noleisthebest wrote:...

My vote goes to Djoko. A month ago i would have picked NAdal but he's in full panic mode. Even his fitness won't save him this time.

He is only panicking cause he doesn't get his 35s between points anymore. Otherwise he would still be as tough.
