Re: Australian Open 2015: Matches of the day : Day 3 21-Jan-2015
I saw literally one point of Nadal Smy...utter agony.
I don't think I've ever seen a multislam winner play so badly.
If I were his fan I wouldn't dare utter the word GOAT even in my dreams.
Imagine if he had to play a proper player...surely he must not win this AO even if I have to fly to Melbourne to knock his water bottles.

I can't stand to see Smy applauding Nadal's shots.
Once again an out-of-form Nadal is still fitter than the average player on tour.

Ridiculous sportmanship from Smyth v the worst gamesmanship player ever.

Yesh.. He made a mistake by not allowing the ball to bounce and hit it straight to Nadal who managed a pass against a sitting duck at the net. It wasn't worth an applause by Smy, he should have been gutted.

Well it's too late to start paddling out now...after all, these are YOUR words, not mine...
Kim Jong-Un wrote:Unfortunately it pains me to say it, but I think Nadal's days as a top player in the singles able bodied circuit is over.
He has had a glorious career no doubt, surpassing the expectations of all his fans and haters. I remember thinking in 2010 Australian Open QF, when he retired against Murray, that I would be glad if he went from 6 slams (which he was on at the time) to 9 slams- and I remember thinking to myself I'd be ecstatic if he ever reached double digits.
Well reach that he did, but not only that but throughout his career he managed to win 14 Grand Slams, which put him joint second with Sampras in terms of overall Grand Slam singles titles won. He's also dominated the French Open to scary levels, winning 9 titles there in his whole career. Beating Nadal on his prime in the French Open still probably the hardest achievement ever in all sports. Maybe.
But anyway, he has succeeded all expectations and has become a tier one GOAT; despite incredibly hard competition and injuries nearly ruining his career.
I sometimes compare Nadal haters now happy at Nadal's decline like the Trojan soldiers with a fire extinguisher in his hand saying: "I've finally put the fire out, there's no fire in sight here in the city of Troy !" The problem for the Trojan soldier, is that the city of Troy had already been burned down to the ground.
Anyway on that great quote by me, I think it's time for Nadal to move on with his career and retire. Not much point playing now, considering he can't beat the likes of Berrer, and Coric. At this rate he may even lose to someone really embarrassing, maybe some players who he has a great H2H against. Nevertheless wheelchair doubles should bring great joy for Nadal. Picking his bum between points will be difficult in the wheelchair, but he'll be in a better position to arrange his water bottles.
Vamos !

The thing is, Nadal is a terrible loser.
He'll stop at nothing to win.
On Monday when he was winning easily, he was a picture of health, beaming with confidence...today, as soon as there was a sign of trouble he started degrading himself with theatrics.
Same as against Nishi and especially Stan last year.
It's so ugly.
Smy was even worse endorsing it with his stupidity.

The thing Kim....why have we got to have so much drama from your player when in fact he is just playing tennis? Have you asked yourself why has he got to do it so differently from everybody else......and unfortunately not in style.

Q. Do you think personality-wise it lends well to succeed for a player, say, if they're outgoing on court it's easier to face a pressure point, where someone who is introverted might have to work a little bit harder to succeed?
ROGER FEDERER: Good question. I'm not sure. You would think an introvert is not ready to take huge risks, but then again he might be very thoughtful and play very well-constructed points, won't go for the silly shot. So I guess it really depends what kind of game you have. But I like the idea when you're young and you're fearless, you give it a shot and just go big and take it away from your opponent. That's kind of how I felt, how I did it sometimes. Yeah but, you know, it didn't always work. If you look, Lleyton, who wasn't quite like that, he was more constructive in his points. He had much more success early on. So I don't know.

Something some like Nadal only experience versus the much lower ranked players.

I take more pleasure in playing well and losing than pushing the ball and winning like surprisingly many do.
The best is of course winning with great shots.
And if you can do it in professional tennis and make a living out of it, oh yes!
Naturally, not all pros can fight for glory on top of it all, many are content with their good life and don't kill & degrade themselves to win at any cost.
They are happy to be top 10, 50, 100....
With Nadal, there is something cowardly and sadistic in the mix, the smirk when he is winning, esp the way he glares across the net at Federer.
And then the complete opposite when losing like today for example....
Nobody else has such a huge pendulum swing!

Surely you guys jest... Amri- self proclaimed tennis expert- says this could be Nadals toughest test in the 2nd round of a Major ever!!!
*self proclaimed
So Armi expert predicts Youzny will be a nightmare for Nadal and Nadal blows him away, Expert predicts that Smy will not be toughest 2nd rnds opponent and he turns out to be and takes Nadal to the brink, and expert has been crying and crying in fear of Rosol and Rosol can't even get to the 3rd round to face Nadal. At this rate of success Amri- Nadal is really going to prove you wrong and win this thing!!!! Damn- your jinxing works!
How's that brutal draw looking to you now with iv fluids needed Sela and bunny Berdych waiting .... cakewalk.
My prediction is this is just what Nadal needed. He'll have a couple of days to get his medicinal levels right so he doesn't have stomach issue and will romp to the finals... Happily- I would expect Djokovic to be there who will absolutely beat Nadal down.

Bolleli started missing, that's why Fed looks ok.
I hope he doesn't make things worse like he did against Stan in O2.
Good job Bolleli isn't a ball blasting giant.
I saw the match and though he had his finger looked at his mouvement was very poor. Bol got much worse and that helped.
This and what Nole said is correct. Federer was slow to the corners which was exactly the problem in 2013 with his back related movement, and while he served well- I saw that dreaded straightening of the back in his motion. It's his "tell" when the back is hurting- though on return he was bending down full which his other tell is usually bending 3/4 down.
It comes right after the news from Stan that Feds back was having spasms during DC that would come on hard and ease up. clearly this is something he is dealing with often during matches.
He said the finger was kind of bizarre- almost like a bee or bug bit him, was hurting and swelled up, the trainer didn't think it was a blister and gave him some anti inflammatories which Fed didn't take... and the pain basically went away.
All that being said- some of Fed's net play in middle of third and 4th set was breathtaking. The talent and quality of shot that it takes to do what he was doing is just incredible and puts to shame what others see as talent in some of the other players.. Brad Gilbert, Fowler, and Pam Shriver were besides themselves with glee at what he was doing. It just comes in spurts though now.
He won't get past Murray or Nadal like this though.
I don't know if you guys get the same coverage as I do- but ESPN put up some interesting stats... The comms I think got it wrong in saying it was the top 5 list of the fastest avg forehands at the AO among all players where I think it really was just how the big 4 and Stan happened to rate- but Djokovics avg forehand speed was 81mph where Feder, Nadal Murray and Stan were in the mid 70's... A huge difference and bit of surprise imo.
Then the backhand list- Djoko also led with 69 or 70 and Stan was next with 67, Murray, Fed and Nadal at around 65 or so.. Again, Djoko seems to be a notch above these guys.

Funny you should say this-- Brad Gilbert during the Federer match was talking about Smy's chances and said he had been talking with him, and Smy was just happy to get a chance to play a legend, wanted to play his best, wanted to enjoy and soak it all in on center court, give Nadal a good match, etc... and Gilbert expertly pointed out that those were the words of someone who didn't expect to win, didn't believe he could win, and while nice to say- is not the attitude you need to beat a Nadal or a Federer. It reminds me of the movie Rocky- if you guys know the story- at one point Rocky realizes he can't beat Creed and tells Adrian "I just want to go the distance" "If I can go the distance....I can prove I am somebody, not just some bum from the street"...... It's that little lack of killer instinct that seperates the upset from the close call.
Smy showed this big time with his actions and that sportsmanship to give Nadal the do over on serve. Fans scream out during tennis matches and that's part of the game no matter how quiet its supposed to be. Many times have I seen Fed serving through fans yelling and the match just continues, happens to all players. It's nice and dandy that Smy did that, but he didn't need to and when you are fighting for a historical win, it's not something he should have done. Certainly show good sportmasnhip by not showing the Nadal type gamesmanship to your opponent- it's wrong if you induce it, but if something like that happens and the umpire lets it go- play on. Nadal would have not done the same for you. He's a guy who will call for a rain delay from a drop of rain on match point while his opponent is serving.

Re: Australian Open 2015: Matches of the day : Day 3 21-Jan-2015
Nole's groundstrokes, esp FH are quite unique.
I've seen a lot of players from close up, and never anything like his.
It's not the cleanest and prettiest motion on the contact, where he seems to whip on extra spin the very last millisecond by twisting his wrist...but the result is excellent as he gets good penetration and great length.
I think that's his kind of "weapon": consistency to direct deep balls in any direction without too much risk.
And because he can also take the ball early it gives him so many options from the base-line unlike Nadal whose FH relies exclusively on the muscle. No talent needed to deal with the ball in its dying part of the curve. Just years of drill and a few "extras" to keep it going.
So, with these modern strings Nole relies more on the spin, a bit of muscle and good timing, than the clean, pure contact like Nishi, which really is sheer exquisite talent.
I saw Nole in Wimbledon against Tsonga this year and was amazed that his FH was often faster than the traditionally very fast FH of Tsonga.
Again, versus Nishi in O2, it looked slow in comparison.
BH is really good and efficient, he is actually quite creative with it.
Definitely someone who took to new racquet technology very well.
