All 8 qualifiers at London in today's Qfinals of Paris Masters. I think this year has been different than previous years for Paris Masters, all top rankers have made it to the QF unlike the previous years when most either withdrew or had surprise losses.

I must say I do like this razzamatazz in Bercy, the lasers, the funky beat, crowd clapping to it with the lights off, the only thing missing is a disco ball hanging off the ceiling!
Great too see a bit of effort put into creating a unique identity for the tournament.
I love it how they are so different!
Almost forgot, come on Rog!

Fed needs to go back to his returning best here, which he hasn't been for some time now.

I can'tbelieve what lazy tennis Delotro is playing ON HIS OWN SERVE!!!
Just pushing the ball down the middle, happy to rally, no urgency about him at all....not very good.
.....unlike Federer who is doing some fine embroidery in silk with that sublime BH of his.
Stuff it!
I'm off to fetch myself a glass of rose to toast to it

It was a real pleasure watching Fed today, especially his footwork.
Pretty much everything is back to his best now, except maybe his FH, which will keep improving with confidence.
Serving excellent, I'd say about 90% of its prime, same as return.
Backhand, oh, that backhand.....it lights up the soul with its beauty.

I've let Fed in my heart some time ago now.
I think I'll enjoy the match and the tennis and be happy for either to win.
I'd probably be more sad if Fed lost esp after the year he's had and the win would mean a lot more to him right now.
Seeing him struggle on the court and fight like a lion despite everything was poignant and moving.

So you'd marginally root for Federer then?
If this is the case, for a first time in a long time I believe everyone posting here is united under one player in a match.
(Unless Tenez backs out of supporting Federer)

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Paris
I didn't quite believe him, but maybe Fed was telling the truth when he said the back issue related compromise in his movement and resulting loss of confidence was the main culprit to his recent form. He's not quite there, but if he can continue on this road- he will be able to contend for anything he sets as a goal.
Im sure he would trade this win over Delp for the Basel final and not continue such a deep run in Paris a few days before WTF.I wonder how all out he will play tomorrow or even in the final? On one hand- he can really make a statement and earn some good points... on the other- he's going to be tired going into WTF which he values next to a Major.

I am keen to understand how he got rid of that back issue. To me it was always clear that this was the only problem to see Fed play well. The ups and downs of 2012 were self explanatory.truffin1 wrote:I didn't quite believe him, but maybe Fed was telling the truth when he said the back issue related compromise in his movement and resulting loss of confidence was the main culprit to his recent form. Nice surprise from Fed, I expected him to lose. Hopefully he can repeat this tomorrow, though I expect Nole will win.
Also, just saw a funny quote from the old man from earlier this week (apologies if it had been posted here already):

I know why the year was difficult for me. It’s not because I can’t make a forehand anymore or can’t move. It’s because I had physical injuries, and I still played in spite of the injuries because I’m not going in a corner and wait for four months.

The other factor why he is not doing as well is that the others keep improving but that is relatively negligeable compared to his fitness issues.

While it seems you still seem to be unable to spot the difference when he is on form or moving with crutches.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Paris
Federer has had back problems for most of his career; not surprisingly they are getting worse as he is aging. That is not the same to say that whenever he plays poorly, it is because of his back.Tenez wrote:While it seems you still seem to be unable to spot the difference when he is on form or moving with crutches.
As far as ability to spot the problem, all throughout RG12 and right up to Wimbledon you were saying how Fed had no chance because of his back. For example:
Tenez wrote:I do not believe in Federer's chance at all this year. I expect in fact him to lose before the 1/4 for the time in 10 years or so.
As I had said before, the quality of observation has to be measured by quality of predictions. Easy to reinterpret the history after the fact to suit your theory.Tenez wrote:Yuo know why. He can't play his game at the moment. You don't lose to a 34yo in straight sets after being a break up. Exactly what happened v Djoko at teh FO he starts just about ok but then can't sustain it. He is just playing for the crowd but with no hope to win....unlike the 26 previous times!

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Paris
Well this is how fed explains it now anyway. I am the one who says that the reason he loses more than 2007 is because the opposition gets better....you are saying because he declines. So in effect you are the one finding excuses not me.summerblues wrote:That is not the same to say that whenever he plays poorly, it is because of his back.

And wasn't I right again? He almost went out to benetteau in that Wimby 12 and had an MTO v Malisse. It was a miracle he managed to recover on time and play freely in the final rounds. Sorry I cannot predict miracles.summerblues wrote:As far as ability to spot the problem, all throughout RG12 and right up to Wimbledon you were saying how Fed had no chance because of his back. No, not really.Tenez wrote:And wasn't I right again?
Also:
-Nadal never beating Djokovic again after 2011.
-A youngster breaking through and reaching top 3 by this year
-You've predicted Nadal to go out of the top 10 since he was like 14 (ok I exaggerate, but you have said it for the past few years consecutively)
etc.
Each time you manage to cover it up superbly, citing some fantastic suspension of natural order which could not have been foreseen by anyone.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Paris
This is spurious logic Tenez.Tenez wrote:Indeed cause not sure if you noticed but he is a genius who is virtually unbeatable when on form.summerblues wrote:Though in your case I would say you tend to say it (JS: SB is talking about the back injury when saying 'it') whenever he plays poorly.Tenez wrote:And isn;t that what some of us (few admiteddly) have been saying all along?
If I ascertain Player A is so great that he can't be beaten when fit, and thus say all his defeats are therefore excused, I can then argue that the player has an 'actual' W/L ratio of 100%... which would then strengthen my initial claim that he is so so great; it's a self perpetuating vicious cycle based on a myth.
Now it is true I've sometimes played this card with Nadal, but when I do it I tend to be playing to the stereotype and doing it humorously (http://mytennislounge.com/comments/index.php?shell=5922) while I think you actually apply this idea seriously.
I mean one big flaw from the start is that someone may be the greatest, but his level will still fluctuate when fit. Another player may be slightly worse than him (not as great), but his level may fluctuate too- and there will be occasions and matches where the level of the 'greatest' player fluctuates down while the worse player plays better than normal... culminating in an upset. So it's not necessary the greater player has to be unfit or injured to lose the match.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Paris
So Federer explains that players don't get tired nowadays cause they simply don;t talk about fatigue anymore.Federer wrote:This tournament at Bercy has had a lot more of the top players going further than. A lot of times there can be unexpected players at this stage. Does it feel different?
Number one, we're all here. Number two, I don't get the sense that many players are extremely tired. I remember 10, 15 years ago we would come here and feel like we’d be saying “God, I just want to go on vacation.” This year I don't feel like this. When I speak to players, everybody is eager to do well and play well. It seems like we are recovering quicker and able to take every tournament extremely seriously. It's become super professional, so it's less up and down with the mood swings, as well. Back in the day it was much more extreme. When everybody is talking about how tired they are it affects you more. It makes you think, “Yeah, that's true, I'm super tired.” It's dark, all those things affect you much more. But it's nice to see, and it's interesting to see the eight guys in the quarter-finals also being the same eight guys at the World Tour Finals in London. Well, I guess today’s outcome is something positive for everybody. For the guys who lost, they have more time to prepare, and for the guys who won, they move on and gain more points and more confidence.
Cool. I'll tell myself I am fit, rich and good looking maybe that will work on me too.

NITB, if you had to support someone in a final (and it is a final of any big tournament) between Federer and Djokovic who would you support?
Your last answer was type of sitting-on-the-fence which is fine, but now I ask you to make a call.

JS,
I know it's hard for you to see the world beyond fandom, and supporting Nadal is almost a matter of life and death for you, but it's not for me.
It really never has been.
I like both players a lot.
Just think of Richard Williams when he watches Serena play Venus.
