Re: Wimbledon 2013: Day3
Hat off to Strakh and the way he is playing, proper grass tennis.
With him, it usually lasts a set max, though....
1st set TB.
Fed's BH looking unrecognisable atm.
And he follows my comment with two stunning ones in a row!
Not that smooth and convincing, but a set is a set!

Stak actually plays a better grass court game than Fed this match.
He could have been 2 sets up by now

Fed moves like he's on ice.
I guess he's better off that way because it will get more slippy when the sun goes down and temperature drops

Stak wins the third.
It's quite simple: Stak is better. he should have won the first set too.
Can't see a turnaround, unless Stak gets nervous. But he hasn't been a single bit nervous up to now

Stak breaks, no way back now for Fed.
Sad how the 1/4 record ends. Stak plays well but Fed is missing so many easy shots

That's sad.
Despite being a Nadal fan I've always felt Fed is a fantastic gentleman- shame to see him go out early like Rafa.
Now the tournament ending will be much less exciting, I was looking forward to Fed vs Murray.

Stakh played the most beautiful s.n.v tennis I've seen in years. Fed will refret missing so many chances. But inthe end the better player won

I'm a bit in shock... we know it had to end at some point.... but still wasn't ready.... I guess better to happen at nearly 32 and after 10 years than at 27 and 2nd year in a row........... oops, I just had to go there..
In all honesty- the better player won today- I just can't believe it wasn't Federer

Nadal now up to world number 4, Federer down to 5.
Isn't that strange, Nadal wins French Open and drops down to 5, but loses very early in Wimbledon but goes to number 4.

The record had to end, but on grass??!?!
This was definitly Fed's last chance to win a slam, and this time it's serious.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Day3
It's sad indeed...but I am not that sad. Stak played well and we had wrote about his talent a year or so ago here. On a slippery court, Stak was probably Fed's worst opponent.
Stak went for broke and Fed had way too much pressure. Very unluky not to have forced a 5th set. I think Fed could really have won that 4th set but sometimes things don;t go your way.
I am glad it's a player like him that beat him and hope he will go far in the tournament. I still think Fed's mouvement is poor and that's the real shame cause I know with better mouvement, Stak woudl have been under a lot more pressure on his serve. I have seen Fed returning Karlo, Ancic and Haas on grass and frankly it's not the same Fed.
But again....I really don't mind to see Fed lose but just hope to see new faces at teh end of the forthnight.
I don't think it means it was Fed's last chance for a slam. At teh end of the day it went down to a few points (I only saw the last 3 sets).

Federer wrote:"You don't panic at this point, that's clear," said number three seed Federer, when asked about his future in the game.
"It's normal that after all of a sudden losing early, having being in Grand Slam quarter-finals 36 [straight] times, people feel it's different.
"But I still have plans to play for many more years to come."

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Day3
LS, last year I actually watched the Rosol match live, it felt surreal. I felt really bad for a few days after that, but I watched Nadal Djokovic FO 2012 final set a few times for comfort.luvsports! wrote:JS, how did you get over nadal's loss last year and this year, please help me, I am so lost right now. This year was a bit different, I was absolutely shocked that Nadal was even able to compete after being out for so long. If you had told me before that FO, that Nadal would win the FO and lose R1 Wimbledon- I would have taken it anyway as I didn't think Nadal's level was high enough anyway. The main thing though is that Rafa hopefully can recover for the US hard court season.
Sorry I've gone off about Rafa again, apologies.
Back to your post, like you I am sorry to see Federer go out, this will be a loss to the tournament no doubt, I was looking forward to seeing him play. If it's any comfort, he has been written off before and managed to come back (last year Wimbledon for example). Federer is still a class player, even though he's not as good as he was before. Stak today played a dream dream match.

Why? He's saying he can play for years to come- he didn't necessarily say he would win every event did he?BlueClay wrote:Tenez wrote:Federer wrote:"You don't panic at this point, that's clear," said number three seed Federer, when asked about his future in the game.

I still think he's a class player, it's ludicrous to write him off.

I love the guy but I am officially writing him off to be a factor to win any slam. Sure he can get lucky and be hot for two weeks if the draw opens up for him, but I won't be betting on it that is for sure. I think last year's W was his last slam. I hope I am wrong of course.

Yeah but I don't see how that means Federer is in denial.
He never said anything about winning slams, he just said he has plans to play.
I do agree it will not be easy for him to win a slam- but you should never write a player of Federer's class off.

I think he is in denial talking about how he did not play badly after these losses, etc. I don't write him off completely but he is no longer a favourite to win any slam.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Day3
Fed played pretty gutsy most of teh match and was unlucky to meet someone really going for broke on all the point.
I woudl say the only trace of nerves I saw from Fed (and I only saw the last 2.5 sets...is that soft volley to save the first break in that last set. He played it too safe and that allowed Stak to pass him and break and added huge pressure to the rest of the set.
Strangely enough I feel on those slippery conds Fed had a good chance to win this year...except that it will most likely not be as half as slippery next week.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Day3
Yes surprised....but clearly v Stak it was so difficult to find the right balance as he had nothing to lose. I fear that all those early losses will convince the AE to slow things down even further.
The conditions are slow but because it's slippery, mobility is restricted it's a bit like blue clay. Fed coudl have lost v Rao in Madrid for the same reasons (a player going for broke) but was lucky to get through..and went on to win the whole thing. I feel it's the same at Wimbledon...with a bit more luck yesterday he coudl have gone a long way....had the grass stayed slippery the whole tournament...though that was unlucky.
