Re: Is Tennis.....
I can talk about table tennis as this is my first sport and what I really liked, which is similar to tennis, is the control of a ball. I enjoyed controlling that ball and placing it away from my opponents, or where my opponent doesn't expect it. But this is why I hate teh wind cause it comes and affects my game a lot.
Then there is the excercie part which is a lot of fun especially since the better you play the less running you make and the more you make your opponent run (my style anyway ).
I like the symetric geometry of it, the territory to cover, the opponent on the other side of the net and not on your feet like in football. We also use the most sophisticated tool God gave us, the hand which we don;t need at football, yes one needs great footwork to play tennis.
So very complete, very fun, and healthy...at the amateur level.

Oh yes. We have 4 mens teams and 1 women. It's tough work to manage everybody. But compared to other clubs I have played, I think it is still a very good atmosphere as we all go out to celebrate the year end's team promotions to higher leagues.
And I can shamelessly say that I enjoy competition a lot....inside our club more than external ones even. Competition really spices up the game.

What do you mean by big? How many members? OUr is relatively small with 250 members inc juniors...I think.

I like our human size club. Though we have 250 members, we probably have less than 50 regulars...and out of those 50, 10 who really are very regular....so very manageable.

Re: Is Tennis.....
Being part of the committee you do get that feeling of "managing"...especially as one of my tasks is managing team captains and their selection. I think it's fun.
BTW, I don't think people are as snob as you say...I am sure some are but by experience I never felt intimidated in the 3 tennis clubs I joined in the UK. I even play sometimes at Lake Side which the club right opposite the AE...you know where the car parks on the golf course during Wimby....and even there people are pretty cool and relax.

Well I quite like those kind of snobs. They spice up a place. In fact I like all kind of characters...but when I don't ...I really hate.

I actually dislike those who are smile in front, manipulative and cunning. They are those usually interested in politics and/or joining a committee.
Now I can easily hear you say...."so you are in the committee, isn't it?"

Re: Is Tennis.....
I certainly did not care about the power and was asked to join the committee...never asked for it unlike all the other committee members...but once you are part of it and see all those trying to manipulate the club to their own advantages, it makes you want stay in that power and expand it even. Really weird.

Exactly. I m so surprised by the amount of stupid decisions we had to fight off. One was to have a behive next to the grass courts!!!..when during the day we rent the premises to a nursery!

Woaaaahhh...LOoks like you have been in one of those "meetings". We have a member asking us us to spend a fortune on H&S regs.
No.....free standing cooker...And I'll make sure it stays that way!

Re: Is Tennis.....
I have been in front of cookers many times over my 47 years and none ever fell on me....not even close. I intend to spend as many years without facing a wobbly cooker.
BTW, NEVER BUY A SMEG COOKER! They might not fall on you but the quality is terrible. Surfing a quality reputation they don;t deserve!

Looking back, AO looks like it happened a lifetime ago...haven't things changed since?
I remember buying a sewing machine during the Federer Nadal match and being frustrated with my mobile phone which couldn't pick up wi-fi in John Lewis....
And then hiding behind the sofa during both Novak's SF, playing Stayin' alive about 200 times during the final, suffering without even watching any of it. That was mad.
Then, in the space of 5 minutes having some fizzy wine and being super happy. Funny what tennis does to you!
Then came blue clay, red clay, which conveniently are a big blur now.
Then right in the middle Wimbledon, like a midsummer's night dream a sunny escape on a magic carpet that flies only over SW19!
Things simply happen there, they really do...and nobody asks how, there is a common understanding among the participants.
Never as expected: longest matches, best matches, craziest matches....Just ask Rosol or Ivanisevic. You can even ask Mahut if you like. Just don't ask Murray.
So....2012...a bundled up summer and a long labour that gave birth to Murray's first slam. Ivan Lendl, the proud father
looks on wearing those black sun-glasses. We know what he's trying to hide.
And just when you feel like you've had enough of the year, it reminds you that the sun shines in other corners of the earth and theGangham tennis-land needs to dance its few steps of ambition, as well.
The tired ship finally moors in the south docks of London...into the Waterloo sunset of O2 for one last show. The scene is ready like a peaceful canvas and the tired actors try their best surprising their own selves.
And as the dawn begins to light up the eastern skies and the sound of firstbirds chirps in the distance, one last wave to the good old 2012, what a year it has been!

Goodbye 2012
Beautifully written NITB,should have left it as a thread
Wasnt 2012 a wonderful year for sport especially tennis...it certainly surpassed all expectation for me at least
If someone predicted all the results and drama we have had over the last 12 months..I would have laughed at them!!
Highlights for me were :
Djokovic defending AO and proving his 2011 season wasn't just a fluke
Federer beating Nadal at IW and winning the title for a record 4th time
The blue clay controversy and Federer being the first player to have ever won a title on blue clay
Djokovic winning 8 straight games off Nadal a RG final
Lucas the great Rosol
Federer winning Wimbledon for a record tying 7th time and regaining the no1 spot
The Olympics opening and closing ceremonies plus the semi finals and finals matches
Serena Williams winning both Wimbledon and U.S open titles plus the Olympic gold by losing only a single game in the Olympic final
Rogers 300th week at no1
Murray ending the drought for British tennis
The final at the WTF
Looking back at these memories gives us much to be optimistic for another exciting season filled with surprises
Roll on 2013!!

Take it away from "tennis match" or "tennis ball" or "tennis player" - and you are left with these plain, confused imposters.
