Re: The So Called Great Era in Numbers....
After a rather gruelling spinning Kieron-style class (after all, one has to be prepares to run all those miles in a tennis match if push comes to shove ) , sitting half-dead in front of the large TV showing a superb doubles match and sipping my revitalising Americano, I'm also enjoying reading a nice little article in TheTimes "Djokovic gives a first-class exhibitionin art of defence".
I am glad a journalistic pen gad raken time and effort to notice that:
"It is easy to miss the beauty of brilliant defence. We are so attuned to watching for attacking flair that we neglect its nemesis."
So I suppose when you have two players who are good at defending, you are going to see lots of running.
Watching Novak and Murray live in the O2 on Wednesday, there were some brilliant points .
Players were desperately trying to put the ball oast each other and find that non-existing extra inch or two in the court.
Murray was trying to do it more sparingly with his extra pacy drilling forehand, Nole by being more aggressive with his shots.
What stood out to me which was not so easy to see on TV was how much more nimble , agile, athletic and elegant Nole's movement was than Murray's: as a result his ball-striking was less laboured and more energy efficient, having better placement. That's what made the difference.Nole is a better and more finely tuned and natural mover and player.
His legs and agility allow him to take the upper hand against aost anybody.
Si it is no surprise that he rins so mych more against Andy.
It would be intetesting to find the stats for all top 10 players. Don't know where you dug these stats from , but I'll try to have a look when I get home
