Clay Season 2018
With Davis Cup QF taking place in Spain on clay and Nadal taking part in it, please allow me to declare clay season 2018 officially “open”.
As things stand, I don’t think Nole is ready to compete, let alone dominate, so is this going to be another clay sweep for Nadal?
Yesterday, judging by the score, Nadal destroyed Kholi, who is a very good clay player.
I can only conclude Nadal used the break to pump up his bicep again.
A penny for Federer’s thoughts.....

A fit Delpo, Goffin, Kygios and to some degree Thiem/Fognini are my best bets to stop Nadal this clay season before RG. Isner very outside chance if and only if it come to 2 TBs.
At RG perhaps only Delpo given how well he played the buildup tournaments and how fit he is at RG if they meet. Or someone completely out of picture like Tiafoe. None in the middle.
Murray is likely not even turning up. Djoko is going to come ...and go. Fed has given off clay.
I have 00.000 hopes with Zverev/Dimi/Anderson.

Stan has a big game, but is a nervous player . always was., often a slow starter, You'll see he is the almost always the 1st to get broken. Lost a lot of TBs.noleisthebest wrote:What's happening with Stan?

Norman got some of the confidence into him. But it couldn't become his nature. So his results says. Lots of poor losses surrounding big success ( See the poor clay results in 2015 prior to RG15 win. Same with US open 16. Same throughout his playing career).
Such players may not have temperament to fight out a major adversary and get to winning big. And Norman is not there too. Neither is the age and time. His new GF might leave him too.
So is he finished? I hate to say this, I'm a big stan-fan. But yes, this is how it looks like. I would love to be proven wrong.
Same is the case with Tsonga.

With 3 GS in late career + some help from juicy teen gf, Stan done good, especially crushing Djoko, so I guess he can't keep it, also had some injury stuff I think.

I think you are a bit hard on Stan here.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Stan has a big game, but is a nervous player . always was., often a slow starter, You'll see he is the almost always the 1st to get broken. Lost a lot of TBs.noleisthebest wrote:What's happening with Stan?

Stan is very gutsy...though maybe there is something else in his character that's letting him down, remember when Mirka called him a crybaby?
I hope not, poor Stan.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:

It does look like he may be finished, he is finding it hard to come back to good fitness after the injury.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:

I hope he somehow roars back.
I am not ready for him to retire!

All gloom and doom.
But I know what you mean...
I noticed the whole generation has lost spirit to fight and hope this year....just going through the motion and rolling in the ca$h.

Re: Clay Season 2018
We havw seen players go under the radar for a year or 2 and then suddenly becoming the next big seed killer.
The bottom line is we don;t know. Who could have envisaged Nadal's 2017 season after 2016? no-one!...not even Amri.

Nadal is going to be the fav for clay for his entire playing career. And its been this way since 2008 RG when he dismantled Fed ( who reached the final tearing down every opponent). So his clay results of 2017 was not big surprise. His losses on clay are still major upsets, its not the norm, never will be.
USopen 2017, that was a bit lucky with the draws opening up. It happens.

Here’s stg your you, rotla:
Looks like Stan will be back on court soon, working hard with Paganini.

I really hope Stan and Nole wake up soon, otherwise we are in for a super boring clay season.
I can’t see any youngsters staying with Nadal’s relentless keeping the ball in play safely.
Though, quite keen to see how Shapo plays on clay, he’s the one that has the game for Nadal.

I see the complete knob that is Nadal is moaning that Federer is dodging him on clay.
It's always fun when your opponent lets slip just how much your success is hurting them.

If Fed played Clay, Nadal's #1 would be off.

Re: Clay Season 2018
Nadal has to be moaning about something or the other. The constant whiner.
It would be incredible if he loses all his clay titles he won last year. Then we will have to hear more of those. But I'll enjoy it.
Just like I enjoy Murray cursing himself, his team, his racquet, his dog.. everyone.. when he is losing... it gets funny after a while.

Re: Clay Season 2018
I am not sure he is moaning. He is highlighting Federer's contradiction.
"Speaking about Federer’s decision, Nadal said, “He says he will love to play against me again in best-of-five sets on clay. He said that a couple of days ago - and I thought he would play Roland Garros. Then a few days later he says he will not play in one event, so there’s a little bit of controversy with that.”"
What Nadal does not seem to understand is that Fed would like to play Nadal on clay in best of 5...without having to play the other 6 players to meet him there.
One should sponsor such match. It should have neough money at stake to make it real competition and not an exho.

Exactly.
Plus, Babolat keeps producing these massive, energy sapping balls, Fed is not nuts to go there, I’ll never forget how pissed off he was last time he played FO.
