Koening who I think is one of teh best commentator said so too. But it was not obvious.
However as mentioned, 11am start is tough when you are older. I know this from experience.

Re: Indian Wells
For those who are not convinced about Fed being better now than in 2007 or before, today is a match he could not have won back then. With his BH, he would not have been able to sustain the attacks from Coric.
In spite of not having a firing BH today, it gave him enough pace to stay in the rally and minimise the running. It would have been shanking galore had he had that old racquet.

Poor match that second one. Raonic is one of the few player who gets worse as he ages.

It's almost unfair for Fed....Delpo is having an easy training session.....while Fed will have to recover from a tough physical match.

I didn’t see any back clues. Normally you can see them but really this was about a very windy day on a slow court against a guy who was playing super steady.

Federer should boycott this pathetic tournament from now on.
Court speed is criminal. I hope he says something about it in the press conference, he really should!

How on earth can such dull, slow players be making 1000 SF?
Where are Goffin, Tsonga, Fognini, Monfils....
How stupid a TD so you need to be to spend all that money and have such poor tennis quality in your tournament...

Just saw that Fed was warming up with his jacket...so probably some stiffness somewhere...as one would expect at 11am.

Jacket or no jacket, a win is a win, and trophy number 98 waiting tomorrow.
Btw, wouldn’t it be cool if Fed’s 100th came in Wimbledon?

Stats wee showing that Coric is standing further back on the return in 2018 than before so clearly learning tips from Nadal/Moya! On those slow courts one can stand back on return and cut the UEs.
That's why this court, like the USO behave like clay courts in facts.

Today I saw further confirmation of why Federer should skip the whole clay season. What’s the point of knocking himself out to have all his shots be run down by guys like Coric?

What’s people’s view of the final then? Is Del Potro able, as he so often is, to knock Federer off his game?

At first I thought Delpo would have no chance but he played quite well versus Raonic though Rao was pathetic so difficult to say.
Delpo again has the huge advantage of being able to hit through this bloody slow court. However, he won;t be able to hurt Fed on the Bh to BH battle and that is going to be a big relief for Fed.
If Fed is 80% fit e should win it.

I think myself a reasonably normal middle-aged man. Whether or not Fed wins a SF of a Masters 1000 has little impact on his legacy, and his legacy has zero implication for my life. Yet here I was, checking scores on my phone every 5 minutes, all stressed out when he went down a break in the 3rd set.

Re: Indian Wells
It did not look to me like Fed had a back issue, but on the other hand, I thought that already vs Chung he looked out-of-sorts. Against Chung, he only played well in patches - when it mattered - but otherwise was quite ordinary. I was thinking maybe he was just saving himself, but maybe there is more to it.
Early today, he was blowing his nose at one of the changeovers and commentators suggested that maybe he had a mild cold or something. I am hoping it was something like that - something that would just go away quick.

Nothing to do with a cold. But back or not back there is going to be stiffness in a 36yo at 11am who has played 4 match in the previous days.
The slow courts certainly did not help!

Re: Indian Wells
Well summed up, except that Fed does not dare to talk about court speed not to annoy his "freinds".
“I had to fight a little bit just to keep the ball in play,” said Federer. “I tried not to do too much shot-making because it was difficult in the wind and Borna was incredibly steady. He was playing deep, with hard shots. It was tough to do anything. When he was up a set and a break, it was tough for me to accept and move on and just be happy to stay in the game, stay in the rallies with nothing fancy and maybe he would get a little nervous, and I think that’s exactly what happened. I got a little bit lucky, too.”

I was confident he would win even after the 1st set loss. But then yes I was not scared but resigned he would lose after being broken again.
There are a few reasons why Fed was not playing his best. Wind, slow courts and stiffness...in whatever order.

This tournament is best forgotten asap.
Only Federer’s win can give it some historic dignity.
And of course he will win.
Shame there won’t be much left in the tank for Miami.

Re: Indian Wells
Wives generally want their husbands to go shopping with them because they want them to share activity with them and don’t want them just doing their own thing. By middle age most have grown out of that phase, though the desire to command the attention of their husband (often by assigning ‘urgent’ tasks and the like) never really lapses completely, unless they no longer care for their husband.noleisthebest wrote:bogbrush wrote:Which reasonably normal middle-aged man ever goes shopping with his wife?

Re: Indian Wells
So, it's down to the two form players at the moment. As it always seemed like it would end up as. And, if I am honest, I had Del Potro as slight favourite at the start - and still do. It depends on how they turn up - but there are only 3 players that I've seen get into Fed's head - and this is one of them.
Don't be surprised to see Federer lose.

No we won't be surprised cause Fed might feel and pay for his yesterday match...but Fed's possible bad form is the only chance for Delpo.

Yeah, it's the only chance for someone who is a former slam winner - and the last winner of an event - and who has beaten Federer numerous times before. Clearly this useless man has no chance.

Re: Indian Wells
I reckon this is a toss up match. Federer hasn’t really hit any kind of high level this week. It’s not all about him though, not least the court and wind are not to his liking.
Del Potro is on a decent run and has a weapon that can mess Federer up. It always takes a good standard by Fed to beat him.
On the other hand Del Potro isn’t playing amazing tennis despite winning matches.
So, tough one to call. Could easily be very frustrating for Fed fans or he could ease through. 60/40 Federer I think.

Re: Indian Wells
One tough match for both of them. If Fed is not suffering back problems I make him marginal favourite. If you look at their rivalry Del Boy has only won when Fed is on a low or del Boy was on his career high. Fed knows what to do even if he has to work hard in most of their matches.

It's not so much the back than just being stiff from having lactic acid residual in all his muscles.
Fed needs to win this remain #1 till Rome...and most likely till Wimbledon.
