Re: Wimbledon Day 10 MENS QUARTER FINALS
That last match is a slight concern but Miami is surely very different from Wimbledon, you agree?Tenez wrote:Berdych has not beaten Federer in their last 7 encounters. In those last 7 matches, Berdych won 2 sets out of 18 sets!!! Last time berdych beat fed was 2013 when Fed had known back problems.
Though the bad news is that Berdych had match point in their last match.
Indeed I think Sam is much less dangerous than Cilic.....However a Fed v Cilic final could be exciting.
Let's skip the exciting and go straight to the historic, emotional pinnacle that would be an 8th Wimbledon.

I refuse to think about it.bogbrush wrote:

Yes Miami is different and Federer still won the first set 62 before he got into a drop of form. he can't afford those drops now.

Oh my! So close now. It will be a heartbreak if he fails to win from here. The last time I was as confident as I am now about him winning a slam before SFs started was probably USO 2007. I just hope he does not disappoint.
I did not see any of the match, based on commentary I will probably watch at least the second set, the third set TB, and the game where Fed had to save BPs.

I am not too worried about that. First, none of the remaining opponents will mean endless rallying but also I think Fed is looking far better this year. In 2015 he was advancing in slams without dropping sets but I was under the impression that he had to put fair amount energy into ensuring he did not drop those sets. This year he has been cruising. I was never worried after the first couple rounds when some people thought he did not look all that good. To me he looked very good and very confident that he did not need to get out of the second gear.Tenez wrote:I just remember Wimby and USO 15 where he only lost one set i believe in 12 matches, yet arrives quite tired in the final and lost to Djoko.
I think you also noticed that in the early rounds - he just played as much as he needed to.

We are going to have our first under-30 slam finalist this year, though not from among the youngsters. Cilic is 28 going on 29 and Querrey will be turning 30 in October.

The last time there was no member of the Ugly 3 in a slam SF was at RG 2009 - the year Fed won it (remaining semifinalists were Soderling, Del Potro and Gonzalez).

Speaking of retirements, would it not be lovely if the Ugly 3 all slowly ran out of gas over the next couple of years, retired and then were sitting in the stands watching Federer lift his final grand slam title in a couple of years?

I think skipping the clay season will now show that it was a wise decision.Tenez wrote:In any case he did his best not to lose that set. So can also say: he wasn't afraid to lose the set, or afraid to play a long match.
He won't panic if he loses a set upcoming matches
Sure we have the AO 17 as an odd one but lets not forget he has 2 days rest there before the final.
Anyway, Berdych will be fresh on Friday so let's hope Federer gets very rested cause when he is not, Berdych can hurt him.

Federer will now win this at a canter, and who would bet against him to add to the US Open to his haul this year.
The man is back. In a few years time we will deeply miss this era. That is, of course, unless Federer is still winning at 46.

To me, this one is not about numbers, 8, 19....
For what use are numbers to the eye?
It's not even about Wimbledon.
For what use is a name and tradition to the living heart?
It's about a man with the ball and the racquet.
And the crescendo of ecstasy when that moment ends.
It's about play. The blaze of the sinking sun,
When that man paints the rainbow in the evening sky.

Yes there is all that NITB but all those nice images would mean little if the number was 0. We can only apprecuate them when they add 1.

Wow what a chain events that was yesterday....
The draw luck that many Federer fans have clambered for and now they have it. Have to say it's quite nerving to even whisper the fact of an 8th and absolute Wimbledon Title for Federer is a strong likelihood now than it's ever been.
Novak and Andy you feel might benefit from a Fedal exile to refresh and prolong their careers.
Just when you think you've seen it all.

Re: Wimbledon Day 10 MENS QUARTER FINALS
Dare we dream?
It's hard not to. In theory Fed should cruise to the title, but, this is grass and the remaining three are all big hitters who can potentially take the racquet out of his hands.
Having said that, if you'd pick anyone to close it out from this point onwards against the remaining opponents it'd be Federer. He doesn't wilt in the face of being the favourite - I think he feels in his mind that he is always the favourite against anyone in faster conditions, and, he is the best at neutralising the big hitters.
Be19eve - or something like that

Chill now BB. Just stick to the facts. He's in good form and better than the rest.

BB is right to be cautious. At near 36, Fed could easily have an off-day or a poor service game here and there. This would make the difference esp when playing Cilic type players. It isn't over yet.

Re: Wimbledon Day 10 MENS QUARTER FINALS
He certainly could have an off-day, but he has not yet have one this year.
It is very hard not to be quite optimistic. It will feel rather awful if he somehow fails to deliver.

Tell me, I can't recall being as wound up as this since probably FO 2009.

Re: Wimbledon Day 10 MENS QUARTER FINALS
I don't get as wound up these days where Federer's success is concerned - because he's done it all. It was much worse when he didn't have a FO title. Still, N8 Wimbledon is a special special achievement - and he's had it in his grasp twice. Third time lucky.
