Re: ATP Masters 1000: Cinncinati
Actually...just checked and Jarryd was 20yo ...not 17 but I remember he had big myopia glasses and Mel Purcell was taking the piss on the returns by standing so close to the service line.....2 2 and 3 for purcell. later Jarryd became a more successful player than Purcell.

It's dead here because most people who are die hard tennis fans are part of a clique mentality and are not very nice people. That goes for the majority of 606v2. They'll never join here and you wouldn't want them to. They want to remain safe with moderators and admins who will protect their views and their favourite players whilst allowing a free for all on anyone else.
I'd rather be here with 5 members than there with 500. The aggravation you get on 606v2 isn't worth it. Every time I take a peek I see more and more dysfunction. Last week was the Murray and Djokovic being Wn1 and Wn2 in 2-3 years time (not gonna happen), fawning over Murray being WN2 over Federer (didn't matter and didn't last two minutes), and Nadal being a more attacking player than Federer (not a word for how stupid that is). That's in between all the evil little snipes that happen between members. Bogbrush is one of the only sane people on that forum, and he's rounded on time and again with attacks directed at him personally. No mod does a thing about it, but if he returned the favour, he'd be singled out.
No thanks.

It's one thing to make claims that are opinion and another to completely contravene what we all see on screen. To ignore all stats, all observations, all analysis is a rare "gift" indeed. I am guessing the worst culprits have never played tennis.

That Temp21 guy should be called Contempt24/7 because that seems to be his agenda with Federer.

I had another glimpse at v2....a few consider Federer's rushing on the return as gamesmanship, a way to unsettle the server.
That's why v2 is addictive! We need more clowns here!

Yep, federer is trying to win points which he has roughly a chance out of 4 (if that) of winning, yet he is seen as unsporting!
I think Murray and Djoko woudl love it he kept doing it....cause it is an extremely risky shot. He tried it in the past and was not too successful....he might become more successful ...but he is not there yet. However, worth risking it to save energy and create opportunities knowing that the alternative is a gruelling rally with just a 1 in 3 chance of winning it.

It's not unlawful of the game.
Djokovic hasn't complained or Anderson.
It's good someone still brings a touch of flair to the game! Enjoy it I say.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Cinncinati
As some have noted, 606v2 has gone all wrong again because of one mod (temp aka falzy) and the usual Chuckle Sisters of Haddie & Hawkeye who can't contain their fury that Federer has received such universal acclaim for his new return tactic.
Lots of posters played a blinder though, it's nice to see fans of Djokovic & Murray joined in support for it.
Murdock (a Djokovic fan and extremely good guy) put it best, saying that he's fed up of every player going to the gym to improve and he loves that what Federer has done is forced them to go to the practise court to think about how they counter this move.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Cinncinati
The bottom line is they are up in arms about it because they don't like Federer and the tactic worked (Contempt 24/7 is posting wishful thinking that it won't work again, too). It's so basic, so primal, and it's annoying. I have genuine reasons to dislike Nadal and his style of play. But I wouldn't be criticizing him for shortening points. Fat chance of him doing that, though, eh? Where is this uproar when Nadal is breaking the time rule repeatedly (you know, something that IS literally breaking the rules and disrupting the opponent)?
Not a peep out of the usual band then (edit. I see Bogbrush has has actually noted the hypocrisy in a thread over there). Is it any wonder forums have all but died out?

I have read a bit of it and I must say you were relentless v temp. I thought Murddock was a she.bogbrush wrote:As some have noted, 606v2 has gone all wrong again because of one mod (temp aka falzy) and the usual Chuckle Sisters of Haddie & Hawkeye who can't contain their fury that Federer has received such universal acclaim for his new return tactic.

Yes I find it bizarre to question Fed's return tactics....though I could understand where they are coming from, they simply don't realise the skills required to take the return so early. I don't think it is going to be a very successful tactic percentage wise except for the fact that it might keep the server on his toes.

I also thought HE was a big fan of Fed. Have I got a bad memory? I thought she liked both Nadal and Fed but it seems she may have changed her mind. She knows how to create debate, that's for sure.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Cinncinati
Hawkeye always took that position but second to Nadal.
I was angered by temp because (i) she was dishonest in her positioning, first saying it was cheating and then when the forum rounded on her saying various other alternatives (even that he'd spoilt his surprise) and then later switching back, but mainly (ii) because I'm sick of her utterly biased 'moderating'.
There's a bunch of people in there who are keen tennis fans who support Murray or Djokovic as well as Federer.

So there was seriously debate about this? Unbelievable. If you can't appreciate this return (a demonstration of eye-hand coordination) than you don't know much about sport.
Federer steps in after the ball toss, so the server doesn't even know he comes in as quick. But that's the whole idea: to catch him by surprise. Those posters don't see the difference with what f.i. Chang did vs Lendl. Chang moved forward during the service preparation, and he actually stepped back after the ball was hit. That manoeuvre is not meant to hit early but to distract the server. And to be honest: i don't have a problem with that too. It's just like a goalkeeper is allowed to move from left to right when a player shoots a penalty. It may work but it may not.
Asking for more time (a Nadal special) when the server is ready to hit is crossing the line, this clearly not. On the contrary.

I am willing to be a bit more forgiving with temp. Purely because I think he is trying too hard to create a 'positive' environment. The fundamental flaw with this is that anyone's opinion will cause debate and even conflict which does require negativity. What is frustrating is that the posters take offence to the smallest challenge of their opinions. Everyone has one and is entitled to declare, answer or challenge it. That's what debate is about. I am hoping he follows JHM/LF's stead and just let debate have it's day as it will peter out eventually. The over-modding is seriously getting out of hand. The only sane thing over there at the moment is the banter (which is great fun) and some sensible views (sometimes).
I am shocked though at the lack of appreciation for the play in question.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Cinncinati
exactly. The servers' eyes are entirely focused on the ball to hit. They might feel that the player is moving but that's no different that a returner picking his side. Anyway...there shoudl not be a debate about that. On the other side Becker jumping right and left while the server prepares to serve was typical....Becker's gamesmanship....but what was funny is that he went to complain to the referee once the guy (was it Denton) did the same to him.gallery play wrote:Federer steps in after the ball toss, so the server doesn't even know he comes in as quick.
