Wanted to know who started the god awful grunting and apparently Seles gets the credit.

I disagree about grunting making you play better, you are losing precious energy like that.

Connors was the root of all other evil!

As far as I am concerned it's completely unnecessary and should be banned.

The saddest thing are club players, copying this pathetic habbit...it makes me want to scream

The key with grunting is that you are hiding the sound of the ball and impose your own timing to the rally. So without knowing it the opponent associates the grunting with the timing of the ball....then the grunter can change slightly when he grunts and breaks the timing of the opponent.

This is something I observed already on the tour. It's full of tricks like that.....including the grunt which says "out". That has the worst effect as once again, it invites the opponent to relax as if his ball had gone out

But this study and others say it helps! I have noticed sometimes that when players hit huuuuggee shots they do let out a roar/yell.

But yes I agree it sucks. Women grunting in particular just kills me (no offence).

I think there were some before him.....but it was certainly rarer.
