Wimbledon 2014: MOTD Day 7 Mon 30/06/2014
Here is the selection for Monday. Keeping with the tradition of our game, I have included ladies' matches to allow us to have a full set of seven matches.
I know nothing about the ladies' game, so I just picked the three matches being played on the three top courts - hopefully they provide a reasonable selection.
to all of us
Dimitrov
Andy Murray (GBR) [16]
v
Kevin Anderson (RSA) [33]
Novak Djokovic (SRB) [20]
v
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) [33]
Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) [11]
v
Leonardo Mayer (ARG) [33]
Jeremy Chardy (FRA) [33]
v
Marin Cilic (CRO) [26]
Alize Cornet (FRA) [33]
v
Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) [21]
Angelique Kerber (GER) [33]
v
Maria Sharapova (RUS) [29]
Petra Kvitova (CZE) [6]
v
Shuai Peng (CHN) [33]

Let's try our luck today:
1. Murray
2. Djokovic
3. Dimitrov
4. Cilic
5. Cornet
6. Sharapova
7. Kvitova
Hope, all matches can be finished today. The guys who are still in 3R got really screwed there, with 3 best of 5 matches in 3 days. Not that it matters, right? They are just the supporting cast to the main actors.

In my C1 seat at laaaaaaast!
Ivanovic and Lisicki about to restart their match, just walked on the court. Ana is so thin!!!!
When I got to Wimbledon about an hour ago (the weather was great all the way till I got here)heavens opened and I had to wait.....
It's gorgeous and sunny now....
Players warming up and I so want to grab a racquet and play there myself, the court looks so tempting!

And with that win from Lopez we say goodbye to the third rounds, thankfully. Lets hope the other matches scheduled for today will finish.
Hope you're enjoying yourself NITB. I had a bizarre dream last night where I was watching a match at one of the smaller courts. I sat down, and 'you' were sitting there in the seat next to me. No kidding. (Although I have no idea what you look like).

That's funny!
Well, I wish this miserable rain was a dreaml but it's not....another delay. At least, I am sat in a cushy debenture longe sipping some decent coffee (that Lavanzza stuff is good!)...
Just as I got a gigantic ice-cream to console myself after Chardy's loss ( who btw played well, just couldn't do much about Cilic's brilliant serving) and returned to Court one starting to enjoy some very noce tennis between Mayer and Dimi - it bgm to rain
It looks like this shower is going to take some time...it's actually pouring!
The few games I did see, were quite good, Dimi's defence on grass is very, very good. His FH is still a bit dodgy, He tries to spin it too much. Nothing beats the naturally flat timed ball.
Mayer's FH's pretty good.
I must say I've become an addict to live watching, the game looks more human than on TV, no commentating and I can chose to look at anything I like, so I did, esp in Chardy's match
I do hope I manage to at least see Dimi-Myer finish today, may even try to schmooze into CC.
One of marines in C1 gave me an extra tip

Good thing about rain delays you get to talk to people...I've heard some interesting stories, love those from people who traveled from far away...a Canadian woman who came with her 5 children!!! (plus the husband!) a pair of French speaking Swiss guys laden with huge bags from Wimbledon souvenir shop, an elderly couple from the US who ca,e just for one day (poor things, paid the fortune for C1 ticket and are going to see next to nothing like me... )
I wish there was an indoor practice court for fans here...would be fun to have a game or two with a complete stranger!

On a more "technical" level, grass looks quite decent on court one, much, much better than CC showing on TV.

Well...as I said I have watched very little tennis thus far...in fact only Djoko and Tsonga......and both look 2 beginners on a tennis court....pretty ugly if you ask me. The conds are slow which allow absurd excessive topspinning game. As the grass will go, it will turn slower than the FO.
I am not sure what they did this year but it's the slowest Wimby I have seen ever.

Tsonga has a much better all round game, and if conditions were faster, he'd be a Slam champ by now. He is a very good net player when he is allowed to do it.

True but bizarely it is Djoko who has on this match a better Net win ratio. However as pointed here in the past, winning from the net doesn;t mean much anymore.
Tsonga stands way too far back for my liking and this is essentially because his hands are not that quick....though he was made to look very good in that match v Nadal in that AO 08.

It's not a proper lawn game now... and Tsonga is older. It's too late for him sadly... conditions have robbed him.

Smart scheduling tomorrow.
Anyone hazard a guess how they'll schedule 6 QFs on Wednesday? 3 on CC and 3 on C1? I can't remember them scheduling QFs on courts that weren't on the 2 main courts before.

You are so right about topspinning game!
I've been thinking about it for some time. Today for example, the only player who was striking the ball flat was Ana Ivanovic, it really stands out and is great to see, and of course, she went for the ball early. Just her movement let her down on the BH side.
Men are all the same more or less.
I was so disappointed to see Thiem's FH in Boodles, it's so physical and loaded with spin, depressing.
And it was also interesting to observe different levels of spin. You can kind of forgive those who attack, but those who don't.... It's only going to get worse with these racquets unfortunately.

Glad you agree with me . I have been saying all along I was not a fan of his forehand. It might be effective but it is not a forehand I would enjoy watching.noleisthebest wrote:I was so disappointed to see Thiem's FH in Boodles, it's so physical and loaded with spin, depressing.
