Post by raiders_of_the_lost_ark Fri Dec 21, 2012 3:46 am

"Australian Open organisers increased prize money for the early losers at the opening grand slam of the season to record levels on Thursday, a move which is likely to quell player unrest and end talk of a strike. The Australian Open will now pay more prize money per round than any other tournament, with increases also coming in doubles and qualifying matches, but mixed doubles saw a money freeze."

Well done Federer!!
Looks like his efforts to secure a better future for players is paying off.
This could very well end up being his greatest legacy cause it directly affects and improves the lives of all the players not just the elite ones as some would like it

I remember discussions about this with Bogbrush and his argument was that people simply get the money they deserve. THat was one of the few points I disagreed with him. Tennis is an extreme competitive sport where the winner "takes it all" kind of thing....and it was about time to spread a bit the reward.

I think it would help a lot if compulsory tournaments paid the cost or part of the cost of accommodation for a player and a coach. It would mean a lot to players like JJ who used to sleep in his car during challenger tournaments. Shouldn't be that hard to strike a deal with local sponsors for players who make it to the qualifying rounds.

Should that include breakfast and room service? Winking

I think that's the job of the country federation which should recognise who is worth investing into.
