Re: Sascha Zverev's grand slam problem
Nice article LS. It’s a bit of a conundrum. Zverev has made the final now of 5 of the last 10 masters events but has only made one QF in slams whilst failing to beat anyone of any note at all in any of them.
I agree it can’t be a fitness thing. He’s clearly in very good shape. It can only be mental and the added pressure he’s applying to himself, combined with the fact his game doesn’t have one dominant weapon so he does require it all to be functioning. I suspect he will have a breakthrough shortly though - he can’t keep underperforming at the slams.

Funny thing is you could have written the same piece 15 years and 10 days ago and replaced "Sacha Zverev" with "Roger Federer" - which the article acknowledges to be fair.
Slam wins (plural) will come, I'm sure of that, even though I do agree with those who say that that being very tall is a disadvantage at the very highest echelons of the game, largely for mobility reasons, so I don't expect him to achieve the sort of dominance that the 'big 3' have shown.

Re: Sascha Zverev's grand slam problem
I think we have been here so many times with the succession line to the throne of tennis and many haven't even made into the castle for the coronation. Look at Murray, won his first Masters 1000 in 2008 and had to wait another 4 years for that maiden Slam. Wawrinka made a couple of finals before breaking that success glass ceiling.
Zverev has time on his side and that will see off the slam winning competition. Quite sad when you think that will be what dethrones the current order and not his quality. When you consider the defeats to Chung and Coric are judged by the rankings, that well could prove to be his main competition in the years ahead. The Gulbis, Verdasco and Evans defeats yes seemingly shocking, aren't anything I'd read too much into.
He'll learn from those defeats and realise game management will be of upmost importance, especially when it comes to winning slams.

He has years left. He had a stomach upset. There is no problem.
