summerblues wrote:I know I will be disappointed, but I am somewhat hopeful Cilic might win. Three reasons:
1. I watched some of his match vs Carreno Busta and I was quite impressed how he seemed to manage to combine aggressive hitting with reasonable level of consistency. I thought it was one of the better performances I saw from him recently.
2. I have not been impressed by Rafa at all against Schwartzman. Rafa was not playing very well, nor did he look happy to even be on the court. He lacked his usual expression of undying enthusiasm.
3. Ok, Cilic is a choker par excellence. But I am hoping that last year's Wimbledon's final may help here. No matter what he ever does again on the court, no choke will ever be as embarrassing as being seen by millions of people worldwide whimpering as he was losing to Fed. Hopefully that will now set him free and allow him to conquer his demons.
How about Cilic in 4? Any takers? You guys will need to help him through this match, as I will be fast asleep. I am counting on your hard work.
I think he needs to win the 1st set - which means he's got to break from deuce now.

The ATP needs a good dose of the Heinrich manoeuvre! Choking is an epidemic in tennis!

Hey, if Nadal wins this event with RG coming up, they’ll fancy going to Wimbledon aiming for four in a row and tying Feds 19.

Still a bit of a big if.
Unless the tour either gets a stock load of Popeyes spinach or a can of man up.

Re: Aus Open Day 9:
Nadal's record of winning after taking the 1st set is 0.947
Cilic's record of winning after losing the 1st set is 0.289
Admittedly this includes non-slam matches - but Nadal's overall match record in slams is way better than his overall record so I think this stat really tells its story. Baring some massive shock the match is over.

Re: Aus Open Day 9:
Cilic has zero chance.
He can’t hit even a basic CC FH...on his serve!
Nadal has already got him where he wants him - getting further down the spiral of his insecurity and self destruction...
Even Cilic’s shots look weak. Combine that with his inferior footwork and Nadal is delighted to put on his warrior, confident mask.
This is all such a circus!

Re: Aus Open Day 9:
How cheap of Eva Azderaki to gove Cilic time viloation warning...
And good od Cilic to ask her if she was planning to give any to Nadal...
This is what sucks about Nadal...
Not only does he have fixed draws etc...players vs him even have to play against the rules, preferential umpring...swimming upstream all the time.
For what!!!!!
WHYYYYYYYYYYY!! ! ! ! ? ? ?

bogbrush wrote:The AO site offers very smart match analyses, far better than we see on the TV.
No need to go on about personal insults or chokers, it focuses on point construction principles. It’s worth a read.
Agrees with me on outcome too, so must be good
Quite - not only do they not dip into the usual chocolate box of cliches and swooning admiration for the 'history' of a certain tournament that is the staple fare of useless articles on the Wimbledon site or the BBC, they express themselves in succinct and enjoyable English. It's quite a revelation.
Also, I must disagree with nitb, I think it's an easy site to negotiate your way around.

This time violation, probably ordered by the TD to help their Rafa in has had the opposite effect.

This is why sport, and particularly the gladiatorial sport of tennis, is so captivating and nerve-shredding. I had all but given up hope, and then he levels. Will we see a dip after the effort of gaining parity, or will he press on.......

Really, Cilic should win this. I’m not at all impressed with what Nadal is doing here.
Christ, I’m even thinking Edmunds shouldn’t be terrified.

And that has a lot to do with the pace of the court. Put him on USO HC and you will see.
