Cilic needs to learn that 00:40 at 4:1 doesn’t mean he’s won a set and start playing like he is Federer.

As bb says, now it's on Cilic's racquet, even down to serving first in the 5th set.

Let's not count any chickens - you can work it out on here https://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-live-ranking
It's not ranking that counts now, it's the back-and-forth battle to finish with the highest number of slams.

I am glad he broke because I am not sure he would have served it out.
After the miss at 5:5 in TB I thought he would collapse.

Let’s see what Cilic is made of.
Nadal is faking all these niggles, but at least no more MTOs in the fifth set.
I wonder what otjer tricks he has up that sleeveles top...

If Federer is ever going to be #1 again, I would suggest that his chance will come for a stretch of 1 or 2 weeks after Dubai. For that to happen (a) He'll have to win this tournament - miles from a foregone conclusion and (b) he'll have to do better than R2 in Dubai and/or Nadal fails to repeat his 300 points for being losing finalist in Acapulco.

I think Nadal will now be out for a fair while, so Federer needs to win this then turn up somewhere before Indian Wells.

Even Better, he shoudl play a couple of challengers, right after the AO. He can do it on one leg.

I think he just pulled a muscle...in a month time he will be perfectly fine. hence playing the challengers now. He coudl get some good invitation fees too!bogbrush wrote:I think Nadal will now be out for a fair while, so Federer needs to win this then turn up somewhere before Indian Wells.

Wow. Strange ending. Rafa was unable to hit off his leg so I suppose a retirement was necessary. Too bad.

Maybe - but it can be that when a top athlete pulls a muscle that's a sign of the need to be compensating for something elsewhere - I hope not because much as I don't like Nadal, I don't wish injuries on anyone.

From the bits of what I saw of Edmund, I would not be shocked if he makes the final. He played quite well, in spite of his nose.

Re: Aus Open Day 9:
I think if Fed were to get to #1, the best chance would probably be during the clay court season - even if he does not play. If he collects enough points to be close to Rafa before the clay court season starts and if Rafa then does not quite replicate his last year's results, Fed could sneak to #1 then.

His normal pattern is now to vanish for three months. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something going on.barrystar wrote:Tenez wrote:I think he just pulled a muscle...in a month time he will be perfectly fine. hence playing the challengers now. It's simply stretching too much, especially if dehydrated. He put extra effort on trying to bring back some of those serves like he was trying to hard v Ferrer here a few years ago.
We know he needs to be 120% fit to have a chance at winning anything. He cannot do it within the time rule and with similar fitness as everybody.

Re: Aus Open Day 9:
Such a shame
Both players I thought were playing really well all throughout, Cilic was really returning superbly.
Not sure what the injury is, but Nadal has 6 weeks from now till Indian Wells, hopefully that's enough time to recover, rest, and then start practicing again.
Federer I think will get to number 1 soon and frankly it's only fair that he gets to number one as well given his level of tennis.

Don't agree with what you say about his usual pattern. The last time he did not play at least one tournament on the 'South America Swing' between AO and IW was 2012. What seems to change from year to year is the clay/hard balance.
His no. 1 priority will (should) be making sure he is in top form for the European Clay season.
