Prior to the AO, Marterer and Sandgren combined to a lifetime ATP record of 2-22 (0-14 and 2-8). Now one of them will be in Rd4.

Chung is showing how desperately limited Zverev is.

This match is just a constant repetition of the same baseline point. It looks more like a drill than a competitive match.

Well it’s moved beyond a demonstration of his limitations to a dismantling. Zverev simply has no initiative in his game.

Djokovic would have cleaned his clock.

Zverev goes home, 6:0 last set, immature kid yet, bit like Andy used to behave, fighting with himself.

Thiem wins, Foggy wins, lets hope Vinolas can send Djoko home.

When I finally found sleep Zverev had won the first set 75 breaking Chung to love..though Chung had teh first break points and Zverev was saved many times by his serve.

Now we know why he has a bad record in slams. He runs too much for a big guy and does not seem to have found the magic potion the other 3 road runners use.

You sound like you’ve never played any sport, BB.

THe guy’s been off competition for 7 months, however well he’s prepared physically the body is still untested, esp after that match in 70degrees vs Monfils.

He has no reason to fake anything in this match, playing really well.

What’s it ever been?

He’s a narcissist and the whole ‘wounded hero’ crap is so important that it’s antithetical to him to just play through something. He’ll be feeling something which most other players would just go on with but to him it’s the opportunity to make out how heroic he is to battle through.

Of course, when he’s genuinely sore he just throws the towel in because to a narcissist this is the only way to remain the story.

I think Nole is more a hypochondriac than a narcissist.
Plus he is quite spacially and audially fussy...finely tuned cerebrally.

I don't think this federer will win the AO this year. he is not moving too well and seems a bit breathless after 5 games.

His only chance is Wimbledon with fast balls. That will make it 20....and then his best chance is to drop the ranking dramatically and meet Nadal in early rounds to protect his #20.

He’s moving fine, and exactly how has he been breathless? He’s sweating but it’s humid & hot.

The backhand has grooved in and that was a nice set.

Happily for him, if he gets through this he finally gets an easy option in the next round.

What do you mean? Slower? Doesn’t anticipate?

He looks nice and healthy, no evidence of any back naughtiness and his game is if anything even more aggressive than last year.

He’s not wasted energy and if he can finish this match promptly then he’s got every chance of getting to the quarters in 12 sets. All in all, just what you’d have hoped for.

I am not talking about the back or an injury. He has not got the same spring on his legs. He has great shots which helps him hide that mobility drop..but it is obvious his not moving as we have seen him move the last few months. At least up to Miami.

Erm, his draw has been an absolute cakewalk which, in fairness, is a big difference to last year. The real risk is that he gets to the SF against Novak and isn’t match-hardened enough to cope against a quality returner. To some extent, it would help him for Berdych to play well and at least push him for a couple of sets.

I tried it once, similar to Henin, you need an arm of steel for that...
