I am hoping for a close match between Nadal and Rublev. As mentioned the match up should be interesting. As hard to beat Nadal can be, it can also be beaten convincingly. Remember the "he is easy to beat" of Djoko. But also Pouille, and many others troubled him when pace comes from both wings.

Obviously Rublev will be intimidated by the occasion and though he trained versus Nadal when younger, he will have to get used to that spin again. I think if Rublev keeps his cool, he can win...but like Djoko and many at first, they will have to get frustrated first by all those close games lost by very small margins (a FH sailing slightly long or unnecessary, excessive aggressivity, etc...).

I saw some interesting rallies v Goffin, where Rub was keeping his ground and did not hesitate to keep the ball going whcih gives me hope.

I desire another fed nadal match so, I hope both make it

You think Rublev can pull Nadal to 5 set? No way. he will do well to take 10 games.

Thing is that a guy like Rublev has no chance against Nadal. He has no devastating serve to get free points, no volley to close out points, and no experience of the occasion, so he relies on rallying against an expert.

He's also playing a guy who will happily try to win very point.

he is typically troubled by Nadal;s spin. Like Khashanov at Wimbledon they simply have to learn how to play Nadal. Trying to hit through is not the way. You need to hurt but not kill.

In a way i would not mind Federer to lose tonight. I don't want the US to have their Fed Nadal match. They made everything possible for it for years (putting Nole on Fed's side every single time and bigging the balls)....this year they have added more sand and put them on the same draw to increase the chances...

I know Delpo is even less likely. But one has to be realisitic. I would be very confident of Fed winning had been in better shape. But a 5 setter v Youzhny and Tifaoe are not going to be helping versus Nada Talent!.

Early this event I harked back to W 2012, where Federer looked stricken with chronic back trouble in struggling last Benneteau and Malisse, then went on to beat the #1 in the semi final and take the title, recovering the #1 ranking himself after the tournament.

Yes, I like to think of that as a guide.

Was Rafa that good or was Rublev that bad? I saw nothing of the match but I had been hoping for a tighter score.

Exactly.  On Saturday I was going to see Rublev expecting I would be rooting for him.  But after a few minutes watching him, I could not bring myself to do so.  He just bashes the ball like there is no tomorrow.  There is no rhyme or reason.  He is not even going for the winners so much, just pure unadulterated ball bashing.  It is still good to have him, he is a little different than some other guys so will provide a little bit of contrast, but he is not very watchable for me at all.
