It is now a very very tough ask and task for DelPo to make this a 5-setter.

It's pure selfishness, I bet Delpo wishes this was best of 3, he's never made a 2 sets down comeback.laverfan wrote:It is now a very very tough ask and task for DelPo to make this a 5-setter.

What do you think, Ferrer vs Berdych on Sunday? Who will win? I'd go with Ferrer.noleisthebest wrote:It's pure selfishness, I bet Delpo wishes this was best of 3, he's never made a 2 sets down comeback.

Something like that, although I'd prefer to see Berd in the final. Easier on the eyes in every possible way...

Djo playing very good. Not much belief left in Delpo, though he had his chances, he is going down in 3 sets. If Djo plays like this, he is sure to win US open 2012.

Delpo simply doesn't have the variety to even make Djo think. Djo reads Delpo very well, his serves his backhand CC, his forehand direction... almost everything. Unless Delpo make a really stunning serve or shot, he can't win any points.

You do not think Andy stands a chance? I think it could be close. Both playing well (I do not think Cilic first 1.5 sets would repeat if Andy made the final).raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Djo playing very good. Ugly tennis wins again. DElpo was the better player in the whole match. Delpo for playing tennis.
Murray will school Djoko is his own game.

With some sadness, but have to admit Nole was better in every way and deserved to win in straight sets.

Murray depends on players to miss-fire, then to get nervous and start to panic. He feeds on it. This is exactly what Cilic gave him when 40-30 5-1 up serving for 2-0 sets. And from then on, it just went in a free fall. Djo isn't going to give him that. Agree Murray won their last meeting, but this occasion is a different one. So unless Djo plays bad, Murray has nothing to hurt Djo. But it depends on if both reach the finals of course.

Sad state of today's tennis, players with bigger lungs and egg chambers are winning these lengthy battles.

why sadness?
My great sadness is that I won't see a Noel Fed match. The two have played here for the last 5 years. Really sad Fed is not in the semis.

Aha! You are around. I wish you were right I do like his tennis better than Nole's tennis and in that respect he did "play better" but unfortunately in every other respect Nole played better.
Agree that we could see Andy schooling him in the same brand of tennis on Sunday. That one could be interesting.

Like I said before that we are heading for 2 most boring and uninspiring semis of the recent times. How much I miss Soderling! I will have to choose between devil and blue sea, I will go with Djoker as I can't stnad Ferrer.

That was a different occasion, different place, different surface. I never expected Djo to try as hard to win a bronze medal, he already has one. It meant much more for Delpo and we could see that. I wish Delpo too wanted the US open just as much as he did that day or the day of the 2009 US open final.
He doesn't think he is up there to beat the top guys. And he has even said this. Not very good things to keep in mind.

I am amazed to say, but Nole has not been challenged in NY yet. don't particularly look forward to watching Ferrer grind again, but at least it will be himself on a neat pile that will be ground in the end.

Nole does much the same. I do not think there is that much difference between them. They both rely on defense mostly but they both are able to turn it into attack. I think if they meet, it will be close.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Murray depends on players to miss-fire, then to get nervous and start to panic.

2010 Nadal was the beneficiary of the draw and clearly Djoker had the easiest slam draw of recent times. Before Delpo not even a single decent player he had to deal with, even Stan retired.

Today's quarterfinals lacked in quality compared to yesterday. This shows the lack of depth in today's tennis. You take Fed and Murray out and there are hardly any players who can play decent tennis.

In what regard?? Delpo vs Djokovic
Did he serve better? NO 51 of 78 = 65 % 1st serve points won 42 of 50 = 84 %
Did he return better? NO 25 of 90 = 28 % Receiving points won 50 of 122 = 41 %
Did he hit more winners? NO 25 Winners 43
Did he make less errors? NO 33 Unforced errors 28
Did he earn more BPs? NO 3 Break points 13
Did he win more BPs? NO 1 of 3 = 33 % Break points won 4 of 13 = 31 %
Did he win more points? NO 94 Total points won 113
Did he win more net points? NO 13 of 20 = 65 % Net points won 18 of 26 = 69 %
So dear.. in what way Delpo was the better player in the whole match? Kindly answer it.

I would disagree here. There is a huge difference and I'm not looking at their achievements. Djokovic defends but is aggressive on the returns. He may be stretched on the run, but he doesn't return easy balls. He is closer to Nadal on that front. Murray usually lobs them and hopes than the opponent will miss it. How many lobs do you see in a Murray match? countless. You don't see much difference but have you ever seen Dokovic play like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuFXqFifRew . How many times did Murray lob here?
Murray backhand through assumed by many as a lethal weapon, but most of that points off that wing are due to slow, no pace ball which are hard to hit. Do you see Djokovic doing it?

Rotla, Murray and Djoker are not identical players but they both work on the Nadal's brand of tennis. Djoko has phenomenonal 2011 because he outnadalled nadull in his own game. Djokovic too stays rooted to baseline and just retrieve and retrieve more balls. His wins are not the result of his talents but are the result of his superior endurance, bigger lungs and stronger legs. LIke tenez said that this is the thing we have been discussing against for so long and we should continue our pursuit.
Djokovic's game is as ugly as Andy's, you can't see this because you hate Murray.

I don't remember Murray using egg chamber
And I cannot believe that you defend Djoker? Murray is the lesser evil so that makes the choice easier. Djoker will get my support for Ferret match as he was getting for nadull's matches. But in reality he too is Nadull version 2.

Nope - I was playing tennis and then went to bed because I stayed late the night before. I am not good at staying up. Age is catching!
I am just surprised at the close Ferrer/Tsip match. I am not surprised Djoko won.

Murray is a worse offender if you ask me. Just look at Murray's legs and look at Djoko's.
You are saying that Murray brings variety but you do not mention that he can only bring it (usually soft shots) cause he has teh legs to retrieve anything. Look at the link rotla posted earlier v Benneteau! THat's how he won v Cilic. Cilic has by far better shots than Murray, but like Federer v Nadal, he hasn't got the lungs to deliver them against players who throw 10 shot rallies per game.
We all agree that Djoko and Murray have a similar approach but Djoko is certainly the more aggressive of the two.

I am neither. I just do it for USO and AO .
I do feel a bit like a wreck at the moment, but will recover in a few days. When I do , I look back on this time with great fondness.
Also, when I'm a bit underslept, I perceive life without that cautious, protective edge, so it feels like flying through life a bit which is an offer I can't refuse. It's quite liberating, actually.
A bit like when Nole's cornered and starts swinging feely!

Who said Murray was inferior to Cilic and did not deserve to win? Did I? of course not. So who is this person here? You are making it up on your own to suite your point because you wanted Delpo to win and didn't like it when he didn't. So coming up with strange comments that Delpo was the better player throughout the match etc.

*Off topic trying to explain how Djo got his wins in 2011. BTW he didn't exactly stop even in 2012, did he?
* You appear to say that Murray and Djo work on sname brand of tennis ( Nadal's ) and hence similar ( but not identical ). Why not try to explain how?

Re: US open 2012: Matches of the Day: Day 11
Before the superfast tennis-time dust covers another great match, here's a little tribute of Ferrer Tipsarevic from ATP site:
"
Even before the first ball was struck, you had a hunch
that this was going to go five sets. Two dogged, iron-willed
competitors with a knack for marathon heroics stood on opposite sides of
the net. Janko Tipsarevic had rallied from a two-sets-to-none deficit
in the first round, outlasting unheralded Frenchman Guillaume Rufin 4-6,
3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. And how many times has the tireless Spanish
baseliner David Ferrer, ranked No. 5, pushed an opponent to five sets,
only to outhustle them with the match on the line.
On
Thursday afternoon in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Ferrer secured a spot in the
US Open semis for the first time since 2007, scoring a 6-3, 6-7(5), 2-6,
6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Tipsarevic in an epic four-hour, 31-minute
battle of top-10 forces.
It was a seesaw affair that featured a
combined 109 winners and 102 unforced errors. The 28-year-old
Tipsarevic, who climbed to a career-high No. 8 in February, played a
risky brand of go-for-broke tennis — painting lines with powerful
groundies, controlling the midcourt with aggressive sorties to the net —
the kind of tennis Ferrer often forces his foes to play. The tactical
gamble temporarily paid off, as he secured a two-sets-to-one lead
heading into the fourth set.
But Ferrer was far from done. The
diminutive 5-foot-9, 160 pound Iberian baseliner doesn’t have a big
man’s signature stroke per se, no go-to weapon that he can fall back on
when push comes to shove. Unless, of course, you count patience, a
willingness to run for hours on end and the uncanny ability to get to
even the most penetrating would-be winners. And that’s what he showed us
in Thursday’s quarterfinal, where he hung in long enough to force a
fifth-set tiebreak. Down a mini break at 5-3 in the winner-take-all
fifth-set breaker, Tipsarevic responded with a clutch ace, one of 10 on
the day. But it wasn’t enough. Ferrer subsequently forced a forehand
error on the next point, then dropped to the ground in celebration when
Tipsarevic netted a backhand to seal the Spaniard’s victory.
Ferrer
has now claimed three of four career head-to-heads with Tipsarevic, who
finished with 58 errors. While Ferrer outpaced Tipsarevic 15-10 in
aces, he had fewer winners (60-49) and managed to convert just 4 of 15
break points. But it was all he needed."

Re: US open 2012: Matches of the Day: Day 11
rotla we agree that both Murray and Djoker play ugly tennis so there is nothing to debate anyway. YOu hate Murray and I have started to hate Djoker.
You will have to read thorugh the day 10 thread to find out who was picking on Murray's tennis, I don't want to name anyone. Time and again you yourself have criticsed Murray's tennis and if you do that then you definitely cannot praise Djoker's tennis and that's all my point is.
Djoker=Murray= Nadull ype tennis. I will probably agree with you that Djoko is slightly more aggressive but the style is same retrieve, retireive, bigger lungs and stronger legs.
